I think a benefit of the old "softer" lenses is that your attention isn't immediately drawn to the plane of focus, which allows you to take in the scene as a whole.

I was desperate for this lens to work for me. I joined Fujifilm just for it. I love the colour rendition of the glass, the focal length, and the size. I've had 3 copies all stop focusing randomly when using them only to focus again months later. The QA on these lenses is horrific.
The time I finally gave up on it was when I went to Angkor Wat. The first day of my three day trip the lens decided it would recieved no focus data from any of my cameras. I couldn't even manual focus because it was by wire. It was my only wide. 😢
Since then I have switched to the XF16f2.8 and it's just incredible. Fully recommend if you're looking for this but reliable. ✨

The Ricoh GR looking like a stupid early 2000s digicam is actually one of its most important advantages for street photography. All three of the original XF lenses (18mm f2, 35mm f1.4, and 60mm f2.4) have a special quality to them that keeps me using them despite newer "better" versions being developed.

    • @fotografalexandernikolis
      @fotografalexandernikolis 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I've read people say that the old 35mm 1.4 is not sharp, but I think they must have had bad samples, because mine is dangerously sharp even on 40mp (just less so towards the edges) and with great microcontrast, and I have the new 23 1.4 LM WR to compare to. Other than the sometimes too obvious chromatic aberration it's just stellar. I'm never selling mine, especially considering that it might be an unusually good sample.

One of my favorite lenses ever and the reason to partially come back to Fuji. I used to argue with some Fuji photographers in favor of the 32 Touit and the 18mm f2 XF lens in the last few years. So I always smile and nod knowingly when you present exactly these here. The most underrated Fuji gem is, in my opinion, the 14mm f2.8 XF. It is in its rendering the closest to the original X100 lens. Not as contrasty as most Fuji lenses.

I like the 18mm f2 for its character and it's physical design. As for character, I really think shots 00:42, 1:57, 3:45, and 3:49 demonstrate that. The physical design is also super nice--on one hand, the lens hood combination makes it feel like a "cool" lens, a similar sentiment to your "cool" camera video. Amazing video as always. I may buy a preset pack just to support your efforts.
I never understood why anyone WANTS perfection. It’s an odd human condition that we strive for “perfect” yet we become quickly bored with it. Glad to see someone of your ability recognize that beauty LIVES in the flaws and is what keeps a viewers gaze longer. We have a unique ability to recognize when something is slightly different on a subconscious level. For example…human faces are all mostly the same but these micro arrangements and imperfections of the individual are what create our attraction to them. Walter Mandler knew this in his years of developing Leica lenses. My 35mm v2 summilux makes more enjoyable images than my 35mm FLE.
Perfect example of this is go to an art gallery and watch most people walk right past the earlier ultra realistic paintings yet they come to an impressionist piece or a tonalist representation and it will drag them in from across the room.

@GxAce you've knocked it out of the park again, the way to look at things is a refreshing alternative that is truly holistic and seeks out the certain je-ne-sais-quois of what makes an image great by evaluating the qualities of the eye (lens) used. I use the Zeiss Touit 32 of XPRO 1 because of the soul of the aesthetic created (thanks in part to your analysis) - I was always impressed by the 18 F2 when I used her on the XT1, not the brightest or the sharpest but nonetheless has a certain something the others don't. It's only some 12 years later that we can truly appreciate the genius of the engineers at Fujifilm in creating the X system, bodies, sensors, lenses, design, output, function and aesthetic. These are the cameras and lenses destined to be future classics and you are the head curator of the museum of GxAce.

As someone who got the 18/2 & 35/1.4 in 2012 with an X-Pro1: Both of them are still amazing. Got an X-T4 body later, different feeling, but them images are still amazing.

3:29 is better then any of the pictures of the Family Mart with Fuji above it that any of the people are taking now due to the popularity right now. Dripping with atmosphere.

I just got an xt30ii which I love as a small little film-like camera and besides the orange ttartisan lens, you convinced me this is the second lens❤

I actually got the Squarebood for this, to make it smaller in the OVF (theirs is a bit more compact).
I just got this lens last year simply because I wanted a small lens in that focal length. Quality is just fine, tonality is nice. My only issue is the colors being warmer compared to other Fuji lenses (tho, maybe it matches the 35mm 1.4?). It's a nice lens.
That said. I'd by lying if I wouldn't be super happy about a moden Fujicron (the modern WR f2s) update. I like pretty much everything about those lenses and I'd love that style of take on that focal length.

I have a collection of lenses amassed over a lifetime of working with optics. Some are incredibly sharp, colour and rectilinear correct, others are soft, low contrast with wobbly bokeh. All are used accordingly. I don’t have a problem with any of them. If you like a lens that doesn’t have a stellar spec - so what? A very nice video, I especially like the music as well as the imagery.

I have the 18/f2, 27f2.8, the 35f1.4, 15-45Xc, 18-55XF. The 35 is supreme, the 18-55 is great, won't say anything bad about the 15-45 or the 27. (I also have 26 vintage lenses I use as the mood arises.) The 18 was made for me. It is my first choice for recording my life's events. In fact I often add a Tiffen diffuser #2 filter to sweeten the highlights with this lens - for car shows (with all those reflective surfaces), this is the setup!. I bought it used for $200 about 5 years ago, and would replace it immediately if somehow I lost it.

the production value of your videos is very inspiring to say the least. I would love to know where yo shoot your B-roll, on an unused submarine perhaps, or a derelict factory with WWII machinery. either way, i love watching your videos. Great work! keep it up!

I’ve had this lens since I bought my xe1 and it’s by far my favorite lens I’ve ever used. It’s ten years old and I only just recently had to send it in for a service.

Xpro3 really feels best with small lenses. I had the 18mm f1.4 but it was just too cumbersome to use, so I rarely did, and then I sold it.
Also, hilarious that you mentioned Leica Q and Ricoh GR :D I bought a used Leica Q to have a fast 28mm, and I’ve owned a second hand GR for years. I still think it’s one of the most ergonomic and well thought-out fixed lens cameras out there. With the cold winters here, I rarely want to carry a big camera with me, but GR fits well in the pocket, and is easy enough to grab for a quick shot before putting gloves back on.

I bought the 18 f/2, used it for awhile, then sold it for the 18 f/1.4. I regret that sale and plan to pick up the f/2 lens again soon. It’s quite the little powerhouse.

I used to have one of those back in the day and I love it. Thanks to the fact that everyone was hating it you were able to get it used for less than £150. I really regret selling it and thinking about re-buying it. I might have to do it ASAP before people will see this video and prices will go up 😂

I've been watching your channel for a couple years and it appears you either visit or live in Ningbo. I spend a lot of time there and will be permanently moving there in March. There is a good-sized film community in NB and maybe we can organize a meetup sometime. Let me know your situation. Love the videos. Keep 'em coming.

I think this mainly is underrated because the 18-55 already covers the 18mm range with a good enough aperture!
