How old was the trans fluid in your truck when you went to make the tow?

I tow 5,500lbs on a regular with a Titan and Armada. The key to not over heating the transmission is to NOT try to keep speed up long grades. Gain speed before the grade while flat and then let the speed gradually bleed off up hill. Not only will you save the transmission but you'll use far less fuel. I don't use cruise while towing and regularly get around 12mpg at 65mph.

Also don’t be afraid to manually drop gears on hills. It’s built to do that. The higher Rpms flow more trans fluid and keep temps in check. I’ve towed 7,000 from GA to Fla and back. 1000 mile round trip. 0 issue.

Geez man you should have drove that hummer. You have the 2.94 Final drive gear which means the tow capacity is in like the 7000lbs range. You were severely overloaded. You probably did some damage to that transmission and also rear axle.
Why would you tow at 70mph with so much weight?
I'm wondering if the way you rigged that hummer onto the trailer was illegal. Man I'm glad you didn't have some failure. You could have really hurt yourself or others.

You definitely overheated your transmission multiple times. I have a 2007 with the big tow package and a transmission temp gauge and my transmission gets hot towing my 4,000 lb travel trailer on hills. You were probably at least 1,000lbs over the towing capacity of your truck. It is recommended to tow in 4th gear on these trucks and keep it out of overdrive all the time. Hopefully when you changed the fluid (I saw the other video first) it took care of any problems you will have.
Thats an awesome looking Hummer. Good video!

You have to keep it on over drive !! That means keep it in 4th gear all the time and if you are going on a steep grade, go to third and that will help your transmission a lot!

Your Nissan Titan model has a towing capacity between 6,500 - 7,500 lbs. Being yours is a crew cab you're most likely around 7,000 lbs of towing capacity. H1 hummer 8,100 lbs, trailer 1,900 lbs, total weight would be closer to 10,000 lbs.
3,000 lbs over any gas powered vehicles capacity is significant. The Titan did great for a situation it was not designed to handle.
If you want to stay with Nissan Titan 1st gen and tow more, there are 1st gen Titans out there with something called the "big tow" package. These have a towing capacity at 9,400 lbs. Add a second transmission cooler, and you can tow the same H1 trailer combo without issue.

As mentioned your true capacity is 7400 lbs. You have the 2.94 gear set. The 3.36 geared trucks are around 9,000 depending on a exact configuration. I haven’t finished the video yet but with that being said it looks like you didn’t have too much trouble. Also you should be towing in 4th. That is contributing to the trans temp.

First prob is towing up a hill barely past 2k RPM. You creating more heat. Let her sing, it’s better for the transmission while towing
