I was chopping into some frozen oak and white pine with my new LH saddle axe, and it vastly out performs my GB hunters axe, though I love both. 8 inch dead oaks were done for in about 6 well placed swings. Plus, even after about 30 dead trees, both edges were not effected. I did about 4 strokes on a steel and I was back to shaving layers off slices of paper. Talk about a sharp axe! Definitely recommend getting one if you can. That octagonal handle is awesome in the hands.

IMO, when it comes to axes, cutting prowess is more about the type of edge profile (esp the thickness immediately BEHIND the edge), type of steel (edge retention and force transmission efficiency) and technique, than it is about the shape of the axe per se. However, I freely admit it's been 30+ years since I used one.
Ya gotta match the type of edge profile you put on an axe to the type of steel it's made from AND the type and amount of cutting you plan to do with it, otherwise it either wont cut as well as it should, or it'll constantly be getting too dull too quickly.

When the pioneers went into the wild it was unusual for them to have had a hewing axe that would have been some what of a luxury item so they absolutely would have used a standard poll axe to new if the situation called for it. and even in more civilized areas when having a dedicated hewing axe was possible the bulk of removal would still be done with a standard axe to conserve energy from having to swing an 8 or 12 pound axe for hours on end so that was a great demonstration of what your axes can do in a relatively short time frame especially in the hands of someone who doesn't do this all the time great video
