I started welding at the age of 20 in 2000 and it's a lot to deal with. I'm a still a welder to this day cause I love what I love. But the discrimination was crazy. But at the end of the day, they could never talk about my welds being bad.
I am a 16-year-old African American girl and I definitely think I can be part of accelerating the numbers when it comes to the shortage of welders in my generation. Although skin color and gender are struggling aspects of this field, it doesn't matter if you are female, male, or any color of the rainbow. We should definitely stick together to make a change in the world. I sure had thought I would be treated differently as the ONLY female and ONLY black or brown person in my welding class, but my classmates which are all white males accepted me for me and my skills. We are ONE big happy family in the Agriculture part of the school and I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING in the whole wide world.
Haha. This lady tripping, about half my union boilermaker hall is black, and about 15% women. Their no better or worse than the men. Just cant lift as much. Women just don't want to be burned and covered in grime and metal dust. Lots of men don't either. It's why theirs a so called shortage. It's not a racial or gender thing. It's a specific person that is willing to risk their health and working in hazardous areas for higher pay. It always has been. Most people in general dont do that type of work, especially now a days.
I’m a certified welder since high school.. but gave it up because there isn’t much money in it now.. plus it’s bad for your health and eyes .. so I went where the money is .. real estate
