Sevier County, Tennessee [Tuesday, January 9, 2024] - Heavy rainfall throughout the night and into the day poured across Sevier County resulting in flash floods and elevated levels of rivers and streams. To assist with the response, the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) activated the Emergency Operations Center. In some parts of the county, rainfall was estimated up to four (4) inches over a twenty-four (24-hour) hour span.
As a result of the floods, there was a shallow water rescue off Snapp Road where emergency crews rescued an individual from a car. No injuries were reported as part of the rescue.
In addition to the heavy rainfall, wind gusts were measured to be up to 80 mph in the higher elevations with max wind gusts of 94mph recorded on Cove Mountain.
In total, standing water and downed trees or power lines resulted in 20 (twenty) road closures throughout the county.
“Thank you to the quick action of first responders across the county,” said Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters.
As floodwaters recede, residents and visitors are asked to exercise extreme caution when driving on main and secondary roads and remain aware of their surroundings.
Please remember to turn around, don’t drown. Always be aware of Gatlinburg Tennessee flooding conditions!

Hearing the power of the water is amazing. I'm sure you can feel it in person. Thanks for the update, Ryan!
Our pleasure, always reminds me of swift water rescue training as a firefighter!
Wow lots of water. Yes I like these updates. Thanks for sharing.

I live in in NC and the storm was fine in the morning and then it was absolutely crazy after 12pm. I stayed home with my children as well because most school closed or did an early dismissal. Im glad that you and your family were safe during the storm ❤

We left Gatlinburg to return home that morning. We loaded up the car the night before, and the sound of the wind in the mountains was insane. The closest thing I can compare it to is like a white noise machine or static on an old TV outside drowning out all other noise. The wildest part of it all was the amount of wind I encountered while packing. It was slightly breezy, but nothing like what you would expect from the noise.
Glad you got home safely!
Thank you for showing us this. Still such a beautiful place. 🙏

I saw Smokey Mountain family's video from earlier in the day when the water was overflowing over the bridge at the aquarium. Incredible! Even towards the evening the waters were still extremely rapids. Can you imagine the waters folding back at the Red Sea when the Lord parted the waters for the Israelites as to how fast they were flowing? It would certainly have been a sight to see.
Indeed it would have been!
60 yrs ago that area was absolutely beautiful without all the fancy stuff 😢
We enjoy the 522,427 acres that hasn’t changed all the time!
Yes. It is way over developed now and hard to get to in peak tourist season.
Yes, it was a beautiful, quaint mountain town, with classy little shops (the majority) and down home type restaurants. I’ve gone there periodically over the years, over many years. Went in 2020 and it was a circus. Marijuana shops, liquor tasting, tattoo shops, what a shame. Corn dog “stands”. Wish they had left that stuff behind in Pigeon Forge and left Gatlinburg pristine.
Excellent reporting !!!
Thanks DBK!
Thanks for the area updates

The sounds of water so relaxing!
It is!
I haven’t been there for many years but I remember seeing the “ babbling brook” that went through Gatlinburg and then driving up to Caves Cove. My goodness it’s a raging river !! Stay safe
It is indeed a river. It begins at 4000 feet elevation up near Newfound Gap, and drains thousands of square miles of mountainsides.

Oh yes keep me posted please and thank you for letting me know letting us all know what was going on in Gatlinburg
We will do the best we can!
It was especially interesting to see the comparisons between the fishing piers before and after the flooding. In the future, I wouldn't mind seeing similar comparisons for the water levels in other locations in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
I’ll try to do more split screen shots in the future, thanks!
Loved the quiet log ride!

Pretty heavy.....but glad it's not washing over the street at the ole Mill. Thanks for posting!

Gee!! Iowa here, lots of snow. We've sat on the patio at No Way Jose's often enough, feeding nachos to those spoiled, lazy ducks. Can't imagine what Roaring Fork looks like. Be careful out there, and thanks. 🙏❤️

They had flash flood warnings in parts of Alabama too during the storm. It rained there almost continually for two days. At times coming down in a heavy sheet of water. The difference being, the only Urban area within the warned area, was Montgomery.

👍
Lots of water there! Hope everyone made it safely through the flooding and are okay.

that's some really clear, high iso footage with great dynamic range. To capture the cloud detail and not over expose the street lights... fantastic! Sony?
It's all from an iphone 15pro max.
Lot of clean up for town of Gatlinburg
It’s actually not too bad thankfully!
Now you’re getting snow!!

Be there on Saturday!
Have a great time!
Part of the awesome power the mountains can bring! Their beauty is to be admired but their might must be respected, for they cannot be tamed. That defines the word awe & comes from a Power much greater than any one of us here on earth🤔🙏🏻!!
Indeed, like hurricanes in FL I have learned you can never get complacent about severe weather conditions!
There are certain things we can witness, or experience here on earth, that are much, much bigger than us! For me, because this power is so much greater than we could control if it did not recede, it is an absolute affirmation of a Higher Power!!
This is nothing unusual for Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge after a lot of rain.
As I mentioned at the end we have seen it much worse. Many people just like to see the changes in weather & crowds different times of the year when they can't be in Pigeon Forge or Galtinburg.
Imagine how much power could be generated by all that water flowing down right now? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 It's easy to think GREEN! 💚💚
It would be tough to get an ROI with the water rarely this strong.
Love dandridge area. Often visit family there. All y’all getting will travel down to me (sc) soon.
Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
Gatlinburg is beautiful there is a lot of water but it’s still beautiful
Indeed! Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
Chicken guy did indeed close down. Due to declining sales, they shut down all restaurants. They fired all their staff pretty much without notice.
Wow, didn't see that coming! Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
8:39 Good job turning right from the left lane.
👍
Water is the most powerful force on earth! Winds got up here in upstate SC late last night and my power went out around 11pm and they didn't get it back on till after 6pm today! I miss my days of being a lineman but not those all nighters.
Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
The power of the water is shown by the amount of larger rocks on the ramp. Hopefully there was no loss of life to the community. I do have to say the Christmas lights make an interesting juxtaposition to the flooding.
Thanks for the update.
Our pleasure. Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
I just checked chicken guy gatlinburg, and it pulled up PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
I saw that too. Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
Ryan, I'm going to Pigeon Forge in September RV camping. I'm curious to see how many campgrounds were affected by the flooding. Looking at the locations of the area campgrounds, they all seem to be next to a creek. Maybe a good idea for the next video. 🤔
Most are all fine, I haven’t heard any reports of damage beyond some basic cleanup.
i see that paddle wheel, and all i can think of is a way to generate power for that store.
👍
Plan to head over this weekend. How is the crowds? Weather and are places still open?
Weather is warming up melting the snow right now. Should be much warmer this next week & still very low crowds. Here is an updated video: th-cam.com/video/mgxr9YO5Uh4/w-d-xo.html
I was there once during something like this crazy to see.
Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
👍👍👍👍👍
👍
Removed 4 or more dams on the different rivers and wow rivers flooding! Nice
👍
You should have seen it that morning it was wild
I bet, we stayed home off the roads until it calmed down.
We plan to go to the area on Monday. Could u give an update on the area, things open again?
Some things closed again today like Anakeesta due to high winds, but SAT & SUN weather looks great so everything should be back to normal!
We stayed at Greystone Lodge the last time we were there...pretty scary there yesterday. BTW, 8:06 according to Google Maps, Chicken Guy is permanently closed.
I saw that on google as well, didn’t know if someone was going to take over this location or if they were abandoning it all together long term.
That big log that went over the damn at the old mill is a prime example why people need to stay away from damn areas when fishing, swimming. The currents and undertow curents are so strong. You can see that it kept sucking that log back up and under. Its going to do the same thing to a person and more than likely drown them. Be safe people and make wise decisions when around high water
Indeed use caution around water like this! Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
Was that a beaver 🦫 swimming?
It was! 🦫
@AdventureIsOutThere are they common in that area? I have never seen any in the wild and it would be nice to see one.
We are supposed to come up from SC this weekend. Do you think it will be ok? Just curious to know, coming from a local.
As I mentioned in the video it was clearing up for the weekend. Hope you had a great visit. Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
😮
👍
They said windspeeds were supposed to be over 100 mph on Mt. LaConte overnite.
It was windy!
Was the Grand Smokies Resort Lodge on Parkway affected at all?
Most place are all fine, just road closures yesterday. Weather looks great tomorrow.
Did you just leave the dog? Looked like it was really struggling. Hope it made it, but glad you got your video.
That was a beaver 🦫
Good thing is wasn't snow

Haven't been inside in a while.
It came to pass and yet unfolded elsewhere 👀

would think many bridges and buildings could be compromised .. could have lost buildings
They were fine. Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
So sad. We stay every year across the street at Riverside Towers when we come down for the Jeep Invasioin
👍
Wonder if the aquarium is quiet during the nighttime?
Yes, during the weekdays!
How does it look up there now? We are coming Thursday!
It’s gotten much better, Thursday looks great!
It appears that you missed the action by a couple of hours . The water was much heavier earlier in the day.
I was staying home with the family. Here is an update from today after our 1st snow of the year: th-cam.com/video/yqEbIgMNWLQ/w-d-xo.html
at 9:05 is that a new parking garage?
No, it’s been here for some time.
Do you know if Newfound Gap is open
I would always check here for the most up to date info on road closures in the park: www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm
