  • So just how good is the new Mini Cooper ? This week my Mini JCW Roadster went into the dealership for some warranty work and I was given a brand new Mini Cooper with 10 miles on the clock as a courtesy car. I couldn't help myself doing a quick review !
    Here is my review of the 2016 Mini Clubman Cooper S
    • 2016 Mini Clubman Coop...
    It is the engine that intrigued me. A little 3 cylinder 1.5 litre Twin Turbo...what a cracking little engine !
    This car has character in spades and if you buy one you have to give it a name !

    We wanted an auto mini coope,r and the dealer searched high and low before locating one in Scotland! We had no choice of colour, but was delighted with a tasteful solid light gray. The 6 speed gearbox is excellent with no vices and kickdown pushes you in the back. Have now had some air horns fitted to replace the disappoinintg original 'squark' and we are both delighted. My first car was a 1963 Austin Mini Super Deluxe in Fiesta Yellow which after the subframe broke in half with my future mother-in-law in the back I commited the car to a decent burial!

    Ironically the thing that I've never liked about the previous Mini was the speedometer in the centre.Surely with the keyless-go the idea is that your can get in and drive away without removing the key from your pocket?I like the idea of the smaller engines with the turbos. Good performance with very good MPG can't be bad and it's positive that you seem to rate it. Keep up the good work..

      Thanks for feedback, the engine was a peach !
      I get idea idea of keyless go, maybe I've just got too much crap in my pockets to have room for a key :-)

    The performance is quicker than a Mk1 Fiesta ST and almost on a par with the Mk2 Fiesta ST......I've just come out of a 2017 Fiesta ST into a Cooper 1.5 and honesty performance is pretty equal..... Love it

    Great review as always, totally agree about the keyless "key" and nowhere to put it, had this problem in my last car a top of the range Ford Kuga, it flaming well rattled around wherever i put it, i cannot see the difficulty in car manufacturers fitting either a magnet on the dash somewhere to stick the key or having a liitle slot to store it some place how hard can it be. I am impressed with the economy and performance figures of that Cooper, very good indeed.

      +Rob Mason Why not put a slot at the side of the steering column in which to put the key into, i bet no one has ever thought of that one?

    I totally agree about the speedo missing, I miss that when driving the new ones.
    I've also had issues with the manual gearbox or shifter in a couple of new models including a jcw. Not sure why but it gave me fits!

    I got a 2014 in January - mines the Cooper similar to this car but with a few more options. I took a while to get used to the gearbox (worst part I agree with you there) but I'm used to it now and have no problems. I love that it can be sedate and comfy but then drop it down and it does pick up it's skirts and goes - I bought this model specifically for the newer engine - rather than a higher spec older cooper. Glad I did:) 60 mpg is very optimistic though I only get just over 40mpg on my usual driving.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All this car needed to be great was a few more option boxes to have been ticked. I didn't have it long enough to get an accurate view on mpg performance.

    • @loonymoon1
      @loonymoon1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is great :) I can't complain about the mpg either really as it's still a smidge better than my previous car which was a 1.2 TSI ibiza, much more powerful and better handling too so can't complain too much. I liked the ibiza it was a good car but the MINI has more personality.

      Coming back to this after some time, had my cooper over 2 years now andI have had it remapped ( no mechanical upgrades ...yet) and wooooaahhh I fell in love again. The 1.5 engine certainly responds to a remap, it now puts out 179bhp and 250lbft torque and it really goes now! It was fun before it's even better now 😁 I hardly see anything about tuned 1.5 f56 it's always the 2.0 cooper S but it would be interesting to see how far someone with inclination could take the performance of this engine (not me..she's plenty enough for me now!!)

    Great review as always. Some great little 3 cylinder engines around now...I recently bought a VW UP GTi and these little engines are great fun for little money. Would be good to see this sort of content on your channel as well.

    Having just test driven a 67 plate Cooper, I totally agree in regards to the gearbox. Very dissapointing. Vague and notchy. Feels over engineered. I also managed to slip it into reverse at the lights ...very embarrassing! Nowhere near the standard set by my previous MX5 nd! 🤘🎸😎

    So Is 2016 a good year for the Mini? I've been told there are a couple of yrs to avoid. But, I wasn't told what years. ??? I'm looking to buy a newer used certified Mini Cooper (s) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Great video! I'm hoping to have that same joyful smile sometime soon.

    Good review. Personally for me the styling is all wrong. I'm sure the Mini is a great all round package but the blobby styling would prevent me ever actually wanting to own one. Performance wise not sure its that impressive. The 0-60 time and top speed are the same or very close to what hot hatches were doing over 25 years ago. My GT turbo many moons ago would do a sub 8 second 0-60 and hit 120....

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nick. I'm not sure about the 'blobby' styling either. I think I prefer the previous generation. I wouldn't say the performance of this car was impressive, it was certainly good fun though. For performance you really need to go for the Cooper S or even better the JCW :-)

    Question, do you know if they can tune a base to be nearly equal to the stock S? Just curious how far people have tuned the new turbo 3 cylinder. Thanks

    • @nicholasbabeaux2052

      Yes you can definitely add a ECU tune or power module 2 equal and or surpassed the Mini Cooper S

      I wouldn't like to say. My advice would be to drive them back to back and see which you prefer. They both have a lot of character.

    I think the car must have had a dodgy gearbox. The gearbox is usually very slick and precise.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, it isn't something I've felt in a Mini before :-(

    • @evo5dave
      @evo5dave 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having put a couple of K miles on mine now I think I know what the issue is. The offset pedals plus the fact the clutch requires an extra couple of inches travel than the accelerator means it's all too easy not to depress the clutch fully. I've ended up having the seat unnaturally far forward.

    • @SupertecRacing

    I don't like the center console, looks like a smiling face to me. More to the point, looks like Twiki's medallion from Buck Rodgers in the 21st Century. I am definitely more of a fan of the older models of BMW Mini, they are drifting away from the original concept with every model - just like the Fiat 500, which I think the further you go back in model, the better they look.
    Well put together videos, very interesting to watch.
