    I usually have the guys send up some bacon and eggs with my coffee, not paperwork ! 35 years of tree work and I did learn something today. I always eyeballed it but never knew the math but I know the depth of the notch is gonna affect the flip also. example,,,, breaking off and jumping too soon from a shallow notch affects the flip...........Great tutorial guys ! Be safe and GOD bless

    The angle of the face cut sets the momentum and speed of rotation. The wider the face cut, the faster the log will rotate end for end off the stump.

      15:00 [Simple remove 2 legs from a 5 legged stool] if there is no wind]
      Let F = 4 * Radius / (3 * Pi)' Centre of gravity for semicircle
      in other words your F(acecut/undercut/notch) only needs to pass this point (NOT halfway) for it to commit.
      If you don't believe me; experiment with a length of log (instead of your sample cookie) or take 2*(5-4.244)≥1.5 legs off a stool with 10 legs. The weight due to height will supply that required "external" force. The greater the height of the cookie, the greater the "external" force.

    • @orangeshaw2370
      @orangeshaw2370 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Part of safety is to keep your chainsaw sharp. Less cutting on the notch also reduces fatigue, allows for angle readjustment, removal of Dutchman & time working at height.

    Great video Jacob! Something my friend Paul taught me which helped me fine tune my style. Over 50’ slowing the spin with a hand or notch to achieve 270 degrees and below 50’ speeding up the spin to achieve 270 with wide notches or an influencing hand and a little practice works like a charm. That said Maine and Alaska don’t have quite the trees your locale does, however we have big pines and I’ll land 20” wood when possible. Be well

    The log that landed flat you had not pushed with your hand [distorting the fall a little]. Have you ever tried the snap cut? Two horizontal cuts that overlap each other in the middle. Smaller offset for larger logs. You then snap it off and send it in the direction you want it to go.

    Ok lemme help you a little to find 20% multiply by .2 (100ft tree ×.2=20ft log) and I think you weren't achieving flat log flipping because of the deeper notch. I think because of the deeper notch it allowed the log to rotate sooner up in the tree. Love the videos! Great humor under pressure!🤣

    First, I love these videos! I have been watching a lot of these videos lately since we had a tornado come through our area here on Easter night in Chattanooga TN and so many trees have come down or have been mangled and need to come down now. I already had a small Stihl 023 which I love but recently went and got a larger Farm boss 271 just for occasional use, nothing like what ya’ll do. I now have an interest in learning the different cuts to use on trees and when to use each one so your videos are great to watch and educational. One more thing, on the log you dropped which partially hit its end in the ground a little, could that maybe be due to that 20% being more like 12.8 ft instead of the 13 ft which you marked and used? I am guessing this is not an exact science but just thinking out loud. Keep the vids coming, you guys are great at what you do!

    It was a good video, but the math was a bit rough. It would also be worth mentioning that dropping a 1/4 of the length almost always results in an end plant. Maybe this is a stupid question, but let us say you have a 50ft tree. Rule of 1/5 says to cut off 10ft. OK. now, the rest of the standing tree is 40ft. Is my next cut the same as the first, another 10ft? or is the next cut 1/5 of the 40ft rest of the tree, 8ft?
    It would appear the tree would never truly be cut down at that rate...
