- Since 1993 (above) Prof David Musial has been teaching kids who's parents say are "addicted" to video games! YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Phew!
An 11 boy who Musial was "ordered to teach" by his dad, would practice the piano 2 to 3 hours EVERY DAY, on his own with no need to encourage him. He would then be "glued" to his video game console (archaic by today's toys.) He could sing and act too, and I started recording songs with him. One day daddy (a truck driver) came home early and found hi playing video games. (Mom reported that he already practiced his piano for a few hours.) For Dad’s SEVERE punishment, he threatened to send him in 2 days to live with an "aunt" he never met, in PUERTO RICO! (He was serious... and angry!) Mom and the boy were in tears!
Prof. Musial was scheduled on that Monday afternoon to go to Carnegie Hall to experience a concert by my orchestration Professor Charles Jones from the very prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Mom “begged” me to come to the house in Hoboken to speak with the mad and deranged the father. I did. I found a boy sitting on the father's lap but his arms around his dad’s neck rocking back-and-forth and bursting with tears. The father repeated the threat to me and seemed very sincere.
Prof. Musial left... taking how was our is this? How sad is this? The boy was to start rehearsals on Wednesday evening for my children’s Christmas play production as the angel would star in a production of “Hark The Herald Angels Sing”... it was a 20-minute musical. I also had recorded three or four songs with him thinking that he might be like the next “Justin Bieber”.
Prof. Musial got on the subway and went to Carnegie Hall dazed and confused. When Prof. Musial got to the ticket counter to pick up my ticket, I stopped and came up with the idea to summarize everything just happened and put it into a song. See if I can get the boy to come over with his mom and record it and then play it for the dad!
Prof. Musial skipped the concert by my professor got on the subway and wrote the song and went back to his SkyRoom Studio Monday night and recorded a demonstration of it with my voice. “THE VIDEO KING!”
None of the other kids in the neighborhood would play video games with the boy because he always won! He was a brilliant mathematician and musician who was basically unstoppable when they came to his addiction to video games. He was like the “king“ of video games in the neighborhood but he almost “lost it all“ because of this!
The mom brought the boy over on Tuesday night in a one hour he learned and recorded the song. Prof. Musial, Mom and son rushed back to his home in Hoboken and found a dead there and put headphones on him as a boy sat on his lap. Deborah said into tears of joy took off the headphones and canceled the threat. The boy starred in a Christmas musical with standing ovations!
One month later the father did it again!!!
Prof. Musial quit teaching the boy and in front of his parents, I told the boy that when he is 18 years old if he wishes to continue on in the world of music that he should look me up.
He did not. What a shame... Prof. Musial thought?
A few years later Prof. Musial met a sibling duo at the same church named Manny & Joy Medina. At the ages of 10 and 12, the Puerto Rican sibling act who Prof. Musial started to develop decided to accept my invitation to record it for their first album. Later on, we did a concert at the Liberty Science Center and all over the tri-state area with this song as part of their stage show!
What the boy did was to go to college for video animation and ended up working in Hollywood in the film industry. Now in his 30's, he has a son that looks almost just like him, and Prof. Musial became Facebook friends a couple of years ago!
This was all over 20 years ago!
