  • I've lived up here at Farpoint for 6 years now, and every winter I find myself wishing that I had a better indoor radio setup so that I could listen and chat on even the coldest days.
    Well, I find myself with a great collection of radios this year, and a great collection of antennas as well! This has finally motivated me to dig one last hole here on the farm and to build a super cheap 20 foot "tower" to hold it all.
    Join me on this mini build as I get ready for the cold of winter.

    glad to hear you are going back to Ham HF.......so many new expensive digital rigs. I too am old timer General class......Am thinking QRP as it is challenging, antennas and accessories are much cheaper. Never give up shooting skip on 11m....but as sunspot comes back....6 & 10 M too. wish I had room for a long wire, but on a dinky 50ft lot. Keep the videos coming.

    Glad to hear you're going to get your ham ticket again. Looks like that setup will workout well for a good NVIS antenna for HF. You might be able to get your license reinstated if you have your old info and just take the Tech test. Check with a VE team in your area.

    Interesting vids. I've been into 2-way communications since 68. Early cycle 24 I sold off towers, HAZERs, radios, mics, audio racks etc.. At elevation in the Appalachians, countless lighting strikes. For the past few yrs experimented with a 25ft ungrounded pushup mounted off the high end of the deck. The weather station mounted on top still functioning well. No more lighting prob. With cycle25 looking promising I decided to order a V-Quad delta loop beam, install the shortened pushup on a 4x4 using an old G. Martin HAZER bearing plate at top and the rotor plate at the bottom. The total height, 18 ft to top of mast with elements extending up another 12ft. Antenna is supposed to have a low angle and surrounding terrain drops off dramatically for over a mile in most directions. Long hop SSB DX is all I do, just hoping to avoid having a cloud burner otherwise. The 4x4x8 is bolted to the deck and use a winch to tilt up with another bolt up high to keep in place. Going to disconnect the coax, rotor cable wrap ends in plastic and toss far out the window, also disconnect the ground wire from rod/pushup and lower the antenna when dark weather rolls in. Tried combinations of other methods to no avail. Just waiting on the antenna now. Where there is a will, an old man in wheelchair just might prevail.

    Hey Eric like the video's keep em coming . Thinking about getting back into the hobby , still have a couple radios I acquired back in the 90 s but one I never hooked up it's a cobra 146gtl and my other favorite radio is only a 23 channel but has been worked on and with the astatic power mike I get alot of comments. Would like to do base station antenna now with the cobra but maybe in the spring . Thanks for the info you put out .

    I was going to watch some of your other videos until i watched this one. First. A ham license is good for 10 years. You can renew it from 90 days before the expiration and for 2 years after expiration. More than two years after expiration, if you had a General, Extra or Advanced, you must take and pass the technician test and you are restored to your previous level. If you had a technician, you must take the technician. one caveat, there was a tech license back in the 1960-'s that was 5 wpm code and the GENERAL theory. If you held that one, (I did) you can take the tech and become a general. I can't remembers the exact years but very few qualify. I held the novice 1958-9 and that tech license 1959-64. I let it lapse in 1964 and came back in 2008, Tech, General Nov 2008, extra March 2009. I am a Volunteer Examiner Laurel, W5YI and ARRL VECs. I teach the tech in a weekend class. My class - one generation back is on TH-cam under my name if you want to see it for rounding but the tests have changed slightly since. I attempted to video the class twice since the new question pool and had video cameras twice. K3HQI

  • @lomgshorts3
    @lomgshorts3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is obvious that you have forgotten they way the FCC works. You get the Tech Class license FIRST, some VEC's will let you take the General Class license on the same day SECOND. I would recommend getting the Tech first, let 4 to 6 months go by, then take the General Test then. Things have changed since you were last licensed (it would have been easier for you to not let your license lapse), and you would be well off doing one thing at a time. I have been licensed since '79 and have seen many changes. Some good, some bad. But I roll with the flow and do not complain - much. I have a class to teach Amateur Radio at my Church, and it has done well with only two dropouts per 56 students over the last 5 years. All the rest are happily licensed and have progressed to other services, including MARS. They are all still "Hams" first because that is where all the excitement is. I take no responsibility for their success as they did the learning, all I did was answer questions and point them in the correct direction. So, take my advice, or not, up to you.

    Eric just a reminder you need to do the Tech class first then the General. the Tech is only good for 1 year. You can take both at the same time for $35.00 currently. It may cost you $100.00 after January for both license exams. Currently it is just a purposed rule and open for comments until the 16th of this month.

    You may renew your license through the Universal Licensing System (ULS) at any time within 90 days of the expiration date for the license and up to two years after the license expires. A license that has expired and gone beyond the two year grace period will be canceled in the FCC system. At a minimum, previous license holders must take the current 35-question Technician exam at a VE exam session to return to Amateur Radio. The FCC will issue a new call sign and a new license when the Technician exam is passed.

None of the magnetic loop antennas are multi band so you’ll have to research it . J pole is great antenna an I use one currently on my shop for 2m-/440 .
