Germany is known for the destination of world traveller's. It's neighboring countries are France, Spain,Austria and Poland. I've also heard that it's rich in History of old Fashioned, Castles, Palaces etc.I've come to know Germany when I installed Bus stimulator on my phone in it was a Bus routes listed on it(to and From ).when I started playing I started to wonder where are these places located (Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg,Leipzig etc) that's when I started searching in Google.
In the old Year 12 history curriculum in Fiji, one of the topics was the Unification of Germany in 1871. It was important to learn about how the modern German state came into being in order to have a clearer grasp of the origins of WWI. So German unification history taught in the classrooms began with the Congress of Vienna 1814-15, in which the 39 state created by Napoleon (who reduced the previously 390 states) were merged into the German Bund, with Prussia and Austria emerging as the two dominant states vying for control over the Bund. Eventually, after the 3 wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870, Prussia managed to unify all the remaining German states (25 by then) into the new German Empire or Reich (also known as the Second Reich), under the shrewd and maneuvering leadership of Otto von Bismarck. The children always used to find this fascinating. I think the older people knew Germany (Jamani or Tiamani in Fijian) more than the people of this generation because they lived through the war (WWII). One such person was my maternal grandmother (1926-2008). I recall her stories of how they lived in fear during the war years that they might be invaded by Tiavani (Japan) or Tiamani (Germany). In my opinion, the Germans have one of the proudest histories among the people of Europe and indeed the whole world. The influence of German culture is evident everywhere. Here is Fiji, we have English as an official language, a Germanic language. It is also the language of our education system. From 1874 to 1987, we were ruled by British monarchs with German origins (House of Hanover to House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha - later renamed House of Windsor). With the late Queen's death, the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg now rules (another German royal house)... a line which previously ruled in Greece and currently rules in Norway and Denmark. Belgium is still headed by the Coburgs... and the list goes on. What a great and proud history you have. Respekt !
My maternal great great grandfather was from Germany . He was a whaler most probably from Hamburg . He came to Fiji and married our great great grandmother who was from Namarai village , district of Nakorotubu in the Province of Ra . They eventually moved and settled in Vanualevu . District of Tunuloa , province of Cakaudrove . I'm a descendant of their Eldest Son . Anyway that's my German connection , lol ! Sorry for the long essay.
