  • When you think of video games, you might think of at home consoles, removable discs and cartridges, or your stockpile of games. Jerry Lawson was one of the only black engineers in his field and because of his innovation, the Fairchild Channel F Console, video games were changed forever.

Thanks. Happy 82ndth Birthday, Jerry Lawson! I recall also doing a video on him years ago, and there's a documentary (on TH-cam as well) called, "A Great Day In Gaming." Would not be surprised if he was the inspiration for the Kevin Flynn character in the TRON films, games, and cartoons. The video game industry OWES this Brotha MUCH for its existence! Peace!

In 1974, Alpex Computer Corporation employees Wallace Kirschner and Lawrence Haskel developed a home video game prototype consisting of a base unit centered on an Intel 8080 microprocessor and interchangeable circuit boards containing ROM chips that could be plugged into the base unit. The duo attempted to interest several television manufacturers in the system, but were unsuccessful. Next, they contacted a buyer at Fairchild, which sent engineer Jerry Lawson to evaluate the system. Lawson was impressed by the system and suggested Fairchild license the technology, which the company did in January 1976.[1][4]

He's not the father of video games. The patents were held by a different company which Lawson didn't work at. Removable ROM's were apart of the console before even Lawson got to look at it. Stop being a fool and accept the fact that Lawson's role was minor.

Who invented the screw, indoor heat? Do you recall? Probably not without looking it up. We know about the lightbulb and the airplane and hear and see the same tired stories and see films based on these inventors over and over...So what seems to you as an over correction on giving credit to a person due to their race during one month is really just the continued uphill fight for equality for some of those innovators responsible for making America what it is today. But go ahead and enjoy the privilege you have to complain about this or that because for some they aren't being given a voice or able to chose the information they are learning right now. Ironically, you clicked to complain rather than put effort into spreading positive change when your likely ancestors faced similar hurdles for equality or recognition.

I have an idea...how about we STOP inventing FAKE history and start learning REAL history. "In 1974, Alpex Computer Corporation employees Wallace Kirschner and Lawrence Haskel developed a home video game prototype consisting of a base unit centered on an Intel 8080 microprocessor and interchangeable circuit boards containing ROM chips that could be plugged into the base unit. The duo attempted to interest several television manufacturers in the system, but were unsuccessful. Next, they contacted a buyer at Fairchild, which sent engineer Jerry Lawson to evaluate the system. Lawson was impressed by the system and suggested Fairchild license the technology, which the company did in January 1976.[1][4]" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_Channel_F
