That footage was lost too, I knew someone who had the footage and was a British game journalist. It was later uploaded on November 2021.

Hearing Hillenburg say “SpongeBob doesn’t sing” seems really bizarre considering one of if not the most popular episode of the show is one that ends with the sponge singing. Regardless seeing this thing in a higher quality is simply spectacular and the story behind it is simply fascinating.
I think it was more meant as a "SpongeBob doesnt lip sync to anothers voice" kind of thing. I think he took issue with blink182s sound coming from him and that diluting the character brand.
That’s because if you make a 3D model it’s face doesn’t move until you make the face move so when they animated this they didn’t make the other characters have face movements as they did with SpongeBob so all the other characters can’t move their eyes hence the fact that the are starring into space
i also love how there's clearly multiple copies of the same fish in the foreground and backrgound, even having two of the same fish models right next to each other
Despite the lack of face rigging making them look robotic, there's some genuinely good animation here (my personal favorite is Patrick's moves at 1:17)
really interesting story, though I can't imagine hillenburg would be against spongebob singing and playing the guitar. I mean as you pointed out, he does it in the show. Maybe stuff just got mixed up with some higher-up. Anyways the final product is still amusing and really charming, glad to see in HD.
My thoughts were that as a video mod, Sponge Bob was effectively performing lip-sync karaoke. Since the same year the first movie came out and he sang "Goofy Goober" I think he was being protective of his creation. Like Sponge Bob wouldn't do it that way....

To be fair on the BFBB comparison, the models do looks similar between games here. Especially when looking at the low-rez VHS upload a while ago that makes it look really indistinguishable, even when looking closely. Plus all of the dancing background NPCs in the video also having a notable presence in BFBB. Or at least were often seen in that game. I guess when making Lights, Camera, Pants, some models where given tweaks here and there from the BFBB designs, which would make sense for a different game. That's just a theory. Still fun music video. :) 1:42 Just noticed the tiny hands on Plankton there. That definitely wasn't in BFBB, which were just stubbles... There you go, even more definitive proof for your case! :)
The fact that you guys got this done in 48 hours is impressive as hell! You guys better have gotten a big raise for this, cause considering you almost had the first version of the product basically done and you threw it out cause Stephen didn't like it and then made this in so little time, I'm super impressed!
I’m so glad that now I saw the full version with the first few seconds that were missing from the original upload of this video from some other channel. Also, I’m glad that it’s in HD with better clarity. Also also, I wonder if someone has remade this yet with updated models.

I think there is either some misrembering or miscommunication there(because this was literally the year after Spongebob did Goofy Goober Rock in the movie). My guess was miscommunication with some MTV rep. Likely Hillenburg probably said something like "Spongebob shouldn't sing to THIS song".

I'm someone nearing the end of their undergrad in 3D Animation, and the actual, professional existence of these videos has fascinated me just due to how loose and wild this series gets sometimes. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a few questions I've been itching to know ever since I learned about these Video Mods (and if you do mind, please just ignore me): 1. How much creative control did you have in regards to which IP went with which song? Was it "Here's 10 songs, figure it out" or was it more "Star Wars is only allowed to go with Frans Ferdinand"? 2. How, or perhaps maybe how "didn't" you guys got away with using some of the models you did, specifically for "Stand and Choose"? There's a point where Sonic and Scorpion seem to be playing chess, and the only thing going through my mind is what the hell the law department at MTV was looking like the next few days after. Did you have the rights, or was this "I know this model can go into this engine, grab the FBX an we can ask for forgiveness later?" 3. It sounds like working on Video Mods was kind of a hell job, but I'm sure you probably had some fun on it. What's the best thing you feel you got away with during the time you worked on the series, and what's something that you were all really hoping you'd be allowed to do/ get past the censors that just didn't pan out?

The bands and the companies that were available we pretty much authorized by MTV. Their lawyers went out and got the contracts and we got a list. I think if there was a better pairing than the one on the list They would had listened, but 99% of that was done outside of when we got it. 2. How, or perhaps maybe how "didn't" you guys got away with using some of the models you did, specifically for "Stand and Choose"? ******** Nope, that one was first season. We did season 2. I cant say what that one was or why. 3. It sounds like working on Video Mods was kind of a hell job, but I'm sure you probably had some fun on it. ******** It wasn't really hell. It was a lot of fun. Every 4 weeks we were doing another episode and it was challenging. It was a very small crew of about 8 artists and 4 producers/supervisors total. It was a huge task for Our little company and the biggest challenge was rendering all of that CG. Each video generated about 80,000 frames. That's 3.5 minutes at 30FPS for 8 different full camera passes. My favorite moment /thing was that we fixed SpongeBob in 48 hours and re did the whole video. My favorite video is coming which was the Silent Hill one. I snuck in a whole bunch of references into that one.
It is nice and wonderful that the full music video mod is uploaded in its glory. But, am I the only one who thinks that SpongeBob is the only character that is showing more facial expressions while the other characters are not? As in just dancing while not blinking or making any movement with their mouths.

I'm kinda shocked these weren't the Battle For Bikini Bottom/Movie game models. Maybe some of the models were from those two but repurposed and modified for Lights Camera Pants? All three games were made in Rendware, but Lights Camera Pants was made by a different studio than the first two games(BFBB/Movie Game was Heavy Iron and LCP was THQ Australia.) Both devs were own by THQ, so reusing(and updating) assets and models isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Plus, this could also explain why everything was so messy and cryptic. Because both devs probably had different tweaks to the engine and assets that clashed when you and the Mod team got them.

I find it funny that people claim these models to be from Battle for Bikini Bottom even though THQ had a history of sending old models and other assets to different developers for these games like Creature From the Krusty Krab, which came after Lights Camera Pants and was not made by Heavy Iron. It's possible THQ sent BFBB lookalikes and said they are for LCP. I mean, the models in LCP look different and have way less polygons. My theory is that THQ originally used BFBB's high-poly models for LCP and opted to make models with less polygons for the game but sent the high-poly versions to Video Mods.
I love how everyone has a theory except for listen to the truth. THQ sent us asset drive full of shit. We sifted through it and were told to link "Small Things" song with LCP game. Ok. Open drive, models were BATSHIT crazy low poly. We had to remake them. I repeat. The models are wholly original remakes based off of what the sent us. They had to be rigged in MAYA for use with both Key Frame animation and Mocap that we did. Sponge Bob was in pieces, not a single mesh. We had a drive full of arms and legs and different faces. We made them into blend shapes, added arms with new topology so they would bend right. I personally took the textures and scaled them up and added some edge enhancements as the originals were to low rez.
@@VideoModsHD Look. I never said that you didn't recreate the models. You made it quite clear both in this video's description and other places like Reddit that they are completely original. It would be redundant repeating what you already said years ago. The question I was trying to answer was NOT "did you remake the models or not," but rather "why are you saying the models are based on LCP when they look like BFBB." I came up with my theory based on your own explanations and THQ having sent existing assets for other projects like when they sent old BFBB assets to Blitz Games for a future game, CFTKK. The point I was trying to make is that it would not have been out of the picture if they did the same thing for your video but labeled them LCP assets, which could explain why you say the models you recreated are based on LCP. I took into consideration that the LCP models we're all familiar with already existed based on early E3 footage of the game. I was theorizing why would THQ label BFBB assets as LCP if the latter already has their own original assets, especially considering SpongeBob's LCP model has half the polygons as his BFBB one. You said that THQ sent you the assets for the music video to be about LCP, but you didn't say if THQ specifically said the assets were from LCP. I assumed THQ labeled them as LCP and sent you the better-looking models from BFBB because they probably used them for LCP very early in development. I mean, that's the best theory I could come up with based on the texture difference you showed of SpongeBob being less green in LCP and the music video. It's possible THQ changed some colors from BFBB's texture for LCP's new art style before making a different model. I didn't really expect you to still be active about this topic given how many people still think your models are based on BFBB. Though, feel free to correct anything from my speculations about what THQ did.

2. How, or perhaps maybe how "didn't" you guys got away with using some of the models you did, specifically for "Stand and Choose"? There's a point where Sonic and Scorpion seem to be playing chess, and the only thing going through my mind is what the hell the law department at MTV was looking like the next few days after. Did you have the rights, or was this "I know this model can go into this engine, grab the FBX an we can ask for forgiveness later?"

1. How much creative control did you have in regards to which IP went with which song?
******** Not very much. The bands and the companies that were available we pretty much authorized by MTV. Their lawyers went out and got the contracts and we got a list. I think if there was a better pairing than the one on the list They would had listened, but 99% of that was done outside of when we got it.

******** Nope, that one was first season. We did season 2. I cant say what that one was or why.
3. It sounds like working on Video Mods was kind of a hell job, but I'm sure you probably had some fun on it.
******** It wasn't really hell. It was a lot of fun. Every 4 weeks we were doing another episode and it was challenging. It was a very small crew of about 8 artists and 4 producers/supervisors total. It was a huge task for Our little company and the biggest challenge was rendering all of that CG. Each video generated about 80,000 frames. That's 3.5 minutes at 30FPS for 8 different full camera passes. My favorite moment /thing was that we fixed SpongeBob in 48 hours and re did the whole video. My favorite video is coming which was the Silent Hill one. I snuck in a whole bunch of references into that one.
It is nice and wonderful that the full music video mod is uploaded in its glory. But, am I the only one who thinks that SpongeBob is the only character that is showing more facial expressions while the other characters are not? As in just dancing while not blinking or making any movement with their mouths.

I'm kinda shocked these weren't the Battle For Bikini Bottom/Movie game models.
Maybe some of the models were from those two but repurposed and modified for Lights Camera Pants?
All three games were made in Rendware, but Lights Camera Pants was made by a different studio than the first two games(BFBB/Movie Game was Heavy Iron and LCP was THQ Australia.) Both devs were own by THQ, so reusing(and updating) assets and models isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Plus, this could also explain why everything was so messy and cryptic. Because both devs probably had different tweaks to the engine and assets that clashed when you and the Mod team got them.

That version was never "finished" it was in progress when we had to 180 the whole video. Some of the original is still there in the final version.

I find it funny that people claim these models to be from Battle for Bikini Bottom even though THQ had a history of sending old models and other assets to different developers for these games like Creature From the Krusty Krab, which came after Lights Camera Pants and was not made by Heavy Iron. It's possible THQ sent BFBB lookalikes and said they are for LCP. I mean, the models in LCP look different and have way less polygons. My theory is that THQ originally used BFBB's high-poly models for LCP and opted to make models with less polygons for the game but sent the high-poly versions to Video Mods.
I love how everyone has a theory except for listen to the truth. THQ sent us asset drive full of shit. We sifted through it and were told to link "Small Things" song with LCP game. Ok. Open drive, models were BATSHIT crazy low poly. We had to remake them. I repeat. The models are wholly original remakes based off of what the sent us. They had to be rigged in MAYA for use with both Key Frame animation and Mocap that we did. Sponge Bob was in pieces, not a single mesh. We had a drive full of arms and legs and different faces. We made them into blend shapes, added arms with new topology so they would bend right. I personally took the textures and scaled them up and added some edge enhancements as the originals were to low rez.
@@VideoModsHD Look. I never said that you didn't recreate the models. You made it quite clear both in this video's description and other places like Reddit that they are completely original. It would be redundant repeating what you already said years ago. The question I was trying to answer was NOT "did you remake the models or not," but rather "why are you saying the models are based on LCP when they look like BFBB."
I came up with my theory based on your own explanations and THQ having sent existing assets for other projects like when they sent old BFBB assets to Blitz Games for a future game, CFTKK. The point I was trying to make is that it would not have been out of the picture if they did the same thing for your video but labeled them LCP assets, which could explain why you say the models you recreated are based on LCP. I took into consideration that the LCP models we're all familiar with already existed based on early E3 footage of the game. I was theorizing why would THQ label BFBB assets as LCP if the latter already has their own original assets, especially considering SpongeBob's LCP model has half the polygons as his BFBB one. You said that THQ sent you the assets for the music video to be about LCP, but you didn't say if THQ specifically said the assets were from LCP. I assumed THQ labeled them as LCP and sent you the better-looking models from BFBB because they probably used them for LCP very early in development. I mean, that's the best theory I could come up with based on the texture difference you showed of SpongeBob being less green in LCP and the music video. It's possible THQ changed some colors from BFBB's texture for LCP's new art style before making a different model.
I didn't really expect you to still be active about this topic given how many people still think your models are based on BFBB. Though, feel free to correct anything from my speculations about what THQ did.
