Damn. Seems like there its people have been forgotten, the abandoned, dilapidated old homes. Truly sad. Even the roads are not maintained. Thanks for showing us the other side, through your lens.

I think the town REALLY deserves better and it DOES attract tourist. I always see people out and about. And there is a SMALL elite group of people in ties and professional dress always downtown. The town has potential, and deserves better. I will upload another video showing the towns NICE older homes the town has quite a few. LOTS of potential here. STILL WAYYYY better than BELLE GLADE or PAHOKEE in Florida... AT LEAST its got some stores and SOME shopping. I did see hiring signs.. so.. there ARE options. and you CAN commute into Montgomery or PRATTVILLE.. so the "there are no options" people are full of crap. I was very upset to see ONE PERSON cleaning while two houses down someone driving by littered. You got GOOD people TRYING and they gotta deal with a WHOLE BUNCH of crap from those who isn't.

I lived there 45 years ago in a United Methodist Children's Home, rite on Broad Street there is a big white building is in front of it looks like the white house , it's was beautiful there when I was a kid ...but I think a College bought it after the orphanage closed it was almost 150 years old ...it's still there just abandoned now😢😢 I attended Edgewood Elementary School then , Westside Junior highschool...on to Selma Highschool, like I said it was a lively beautiful city at that time this is so sad to see 😢😢

I spent much time at the childrens home in Selma and it was beautiful and wonderful. I remember skating at the skating rink many nights a week! What a grand old great 👍 place!!! Never any crime, and it was kept as beautiful as the Whitehouse! Everything changed around 1966-1967!!! It has never been the same! The churches , Parrish High School, the Methodist Children Home was a place straight out of Mayberry. I rode my bicycle from daylight to dark when the street lights came on! Wow what a wonderful life ,,,,, all destroyed by one event!!! Maybe one day it will return !!!!

I also attended Edgewood elementary school from the 3rd grade until 6th grade!!! It was a beautiful school with great teachers!!!! Parrish High School, ( Selma High after integration) was a great place and a beautiful place!!! So sad our young people could not experience this great way of life!

The problems with Selma are huge. Many have bought the beautiful old homes and tried desperately to repair them....they finally give up and leave them abandoned and empty. It takes a LOT of money. There is much crime in the town. Many disadvantaged citizens feel 'used' by the Civil Rights Movement. 'They promised us and did not deliver. They came and had their marches and left.'' They continue to live in poverty. To be fair, many often want their problems to be solved by others and do not understand that they must be a part of the progress. There is broken-ness and litter everywhere, burned out homes, trash and mattresses left beside the streets in residential areas, crime. Selma was at one time such a beautiful and refined town. Many have just given up and left for brighter futures. I am so hopeful that one day things will be different.

It takes quality people to manage a quality city!!! I will never forget Mayor Joe Smitherman!!! My bicycle got stolen in downtown Selma while I was getting my supply of Selma Times Journal News Papers! My boss the circulation manager called Mayor Smitherman! He told the Police Captain to get me a bicycle or take me on my route!! The entire police Department turned out and found my Bicycle in one hour! They arrested an 18 year old guy who had my bike on the back streets of downtown!!! He served 30 days in Jail for stealing my bicycle!!!

I was just there. I expected to see something like Detroit. What I saw was a very small "hood" area but a reasonably large section of the town that is functional and safe, if a bit dull.
You are right. A few key people could get that little town back on its feet.
It desperately needs something to do.

A lot of areas up north look exactly like this and it’s depressing... I hate the isolation. Something about having people around is comforting to me...I love walking in crowds I love the bustle ...I know some people would have anxiety attacks around crowds 🤔
