This novel is a truly incredible work of art. I highly recommend it, truly stunning & breathtaking from start to finish-- the ending will make you poop yourself.
It seems to me that the interviewer talks more than the interviewee. I often think that Charlie Rose is the one being interviewed. My observation is not intended to diminish the talents of Charlie Rose, just my impression. On the plus side, Charlie Rose seems to be enthusiastic and interested in his interviewee. That's a good thing. As to John Updike, I am not qualified to comment on his work, nor I am familiar with his works. I was surprised to learn from him that he is religious. I often equate religious people with irrationality and superstition. I do like his personality.
I enjoyed how he explores faith in this novel, so you don't have to be religious to enjoy this book! I was floored by it personally, beautiful & relatable descriptions of godlessness as well as the conflict of faith

I so admire Mr. Updike’s constitution, his temperament, and that original mind.

Every other book of his is about religious doubt.
Omg wow, look how young Charlie Rose is.
