  • Trial Begins in Vietnam's Unprecedented $12 Billion Real Estate Scandal | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Vietnam has begun a trial in a $12 billion real estate scandal. Real estate mogul Truong My Lan is accused of embezzling the money from the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank. She is said to have controlled 90% of the bank through a network of 27 associates. The bank loaned $43 billion dollars to Lan over the course of a decade. The extent of graft came to light after investigators found the diary of Lan's personal driver.

Remember Truong My Lan could not have done this without "backing" from "very high power" people. This is just a "show" and a "game". The "show" is to show to the people of Vietnam that the government is doing something about corruption. The "game" is they allow TML to do whatever she wants to get all the money from the ordinary people, then WHAM the government prosecute her and TAKE ALL. So basically the scam is 1/ the government allowed TML to scam the ordinary people, 2/ the government backing TML to continue to scam people, 3/ when TML successfully gets lots of money from the people, then 4/ the government step in to prosecute TML, and finally 5/ the government seizes all the money TML has. At the end, the government is $12 billion USD richer, at the same time hailed "hero" for fight against corruption, and the ordinary people lost $12 billion USD.

To be exact, she withdrew 43 billion USD. However, since she withdrew the money over a period of 10 years, and the anti-corruption law only came into effect in the later years, she was only charged with embezzling 12 billion USD. The remaining amount was only charged as a crime of causing property loss. It is important to note that the actual amount she withdrew was 43 billion USD.
