As someone who will surely be affected negatively by Trump's presidency-- as will many others-- it is somewhat comforting to know that there is still a small, yet fierce group of people fighting for some semblance of peace and common sense. speaking of an assembly of the people, it is quite strange to think that pre-revolution France actually did something better than us, since they had the estates-general. Even though it was extremely rigged, at least they had something that ordinary people would go onto and vote directly. We spend so much money maintaining a congress and massive bureaucratic organizations to have a system of checks and balances when a direct democracy would not require any checks and balances. However, that is just a thought, and it exists in a perfect world where ordinary working people have time to sit down and read a bill before driving to the polls to vote on it, and those people don't just skip the whole process and vote based on party lines.
