Biggest unexpected benefit of gong low buy for me was realizing how little amount of cash is really needed. That gave me the nudge to go freelance. Being able to choose clients and projects and move away from poor, situational corporate ethics has had a massive positive impact for 2021.
Good for you! I'm glad that you're in a better position now because of it.
I think this is an unrecognized part of the ‘great resignation’ that is supposedly happening now. People are waking up to the fact that they don’t need all the stuff and would rather live simply than work for slave wages.
That's really amazing. I think people have a hard time realizing this because of loss aversion. You can see the cash you'd be missing, but not the feelings you'd be gaining by going low-buy
Also remember to invest in various classes of assets for more safety like real estate, shares and bonds .
If you are not experienced , seek the advice of experts ...
I’m 21 and I realised this year that if I don’t buy new clothes or shoes every other month, I did not die... I was shocked. My friends didn’t leave me, my self esteem did not fall. Not spending gave me more self- worth than all my stuff combined.
good for you to realize this early :)
This is very deep and wise. You have overcome some of the most common lies we tell ourselves. Herein lies freedom! God bless and All the best with your journey!
So young and descover old wisdom
I'm 19 now and and I've wasted a lot of money unnecessarily during my teenage years, but I somehow made a conscious decision to break the pattern and started spending only on things I actually really need
Not working this year made me go on a low buy. It was hard, and it’s still hard, but I am finally investing in things I’ve always wanted to do like get my teeth fixed, and visit a dermatologist. I finally have almost enough to pay for these pricier things from avoiding buying so many small things over time. In a way it really helped me
That's awesome!! You'll carry your body forever, it's worth it. I did invisalign in my late 30s and it was so worth it.
Oh yesss. I am excited
Having Invisalign in my late forties was best thing yes it is expensive but I smile all the time, with confidence now!
You won't regret it, well done!
I love that you decided that eating out with your husband was a good thing to keep doing because of the bond time between the two of you. I’ve been getting rid of things and simplifying my life and you have really helped me realize that there are no rules! I couldn’t figure out how to do it before because there were so many “rules.”
I have now minimalized and slowed my life down in ways that still allow for things I love, like bonding with my family. ❤️
I'm so happy to hear that Erica! 2021 was transformative in so many ways 🧡
I like eating out and coffee is also my problem - still trying to cut down but it aint easy 🎍
The one phrase I remind myself of is: "You don't own things, things own you." It goes way beyond the actual cost of buying the item - the item always weighs on your mind or consumes your time to just maintain it. Indeed, we don't need much to reach happiness. Make sure that anything you buy is something that WILL be consistently used, and is ENTIRELY necessary. Failure to do this means you sacrifice your life energy (or money) for things that do not actually add value to your life ultimately.
Congrats on your progress!
That phrase really hits home!
Wow, thanks for sharing. I really needed to read this. I know exactly what you mean when you say an item weighs on your mind. I need to break this pattern. I can think of all sorts of reasons to buy something, and in the end I wind up disappointed in myself because I don't use it as much as I should. It's mindset thing that needs to change.
@@christa3224 You're welcome. Good luck on your journey!
@@Zaerki Thank you, and Happy New Year!
"You don't own things, things own you". So true, and once that truth dawns on you there's no going back. Thank you for encapsulating that truth into a few words.
I started to declutter from room to room, drawer to drawer and I donated so much.We accumulate so much thru the years.Today I live so free,no clutter.I save money and enjoy the stuff I still have…. Enjoying the small stuff.Thank you Sophie.
Good for you Linda! I bet it feels amazing to make such progress.
I like how your content de-stresses me and costs me virtually nothing. Merry Christmas
🥰 yay! I'm happy to help
This will be a low buy, low waste year for me. I'm getting rid of half my belongings, buying local instead of online, no longer mindlessly spending money, working on diy projects, etc. 2022 is my year
You look radiant. I absolutely love this blouse you wear. It suits you so well and is so elegant. I hope to find something similar. Thank you so much for the video x
Thank you! this is one of my favorite linen blouses :)
Love that you’re able to focus on what matters to you along with your husband.
Personally, 2020 started a massive shift in terms of not wasting money and something beautiful happened as well.
Increased my savings 10x and invested in a condo.
Wishing everyone a beautiful 2022 starting now. Blessings ❤️
Congrats Hazel! what an amazing story!! enjoy your new condo :)
@@MalamaLife What happened to your other channel?
I've done numerous low buy months in the past but would like to do a no buy year too, I think this is my sign to finally try it! ❤️
I can't wait to start again in 2022!
@@MalamaLife YAY!
just popped into my feed. So glad to see more young people learning to be more intentional, even if just starting with money. Next move outside of yourself, restrict travel for infection control and environment, when planting a tree in the yard ask what all it can do for you(shade, shape, food) same for ornamentals, vehicles, housing, entertainment but make the focus not be money but how each of these choices make you feel. When you get much older and life pivots you will be much more prepared, but it isn't really about the money.
*“Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” - William Morris*
🥰
I'm so glad you mentioned that minimalism is ultimately about understanding the things that bring you joy. I 100% support your budget for eating out on that note! How have you handled unwanted gifts from family/friends? For example, I shared with family my journey in minimalism, and not wanting/needing gifts, but still end up getting gifts that I'd donate
I am glad you kept room for eating out with your husband because it nourishes your being to do that and you don't do it every day so you deserve this because you most times cooking at home so I feel happy for you Sophie💜 Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful videos your beautiful spirit too Merry Christmas and a Happy healthy New year 🌲🎉
Thank you so much Deborah! happy holidays to you 🧡
I started intentional living since the end of 2019 and felt the quality of life and relationship with people/family all have been improved. I spend less money on buying stuff and clothings but would rather spend some money on buying experiences and services. I’m happy that I have joined the intentional living community. 😁
Love your comments . ♥️ In the end, all that really matters, and which will remain are our experiences and memories especially with friends and family.
I declare 2020 as low buy year. I too have cluttered way too much and this add to my anxiety. Thank you for always inspiring 🌟
low buy year 2022! let's do it again :)
I also made 2021 a low buy year based on your previous video. Fewer new clothes, less eating out, less going out (thanks to pandemic), less gas. Streamlining my life. My savings have grown and I have started investing more. I hope to continue in 2022. Happy holidays Sophie. I subscribed to your new channel. Can't wait.
I love that you streamlined your life. Once the system is set up, we finally have room to enjoy life :) Thank you so much for all your support this year Allison! happy holidays.
I love that you talked about adjusting the "rules", as joy is vital. I think it's more about just being more conscious overall that makes a huge difference. Wishlists are so useful! Beautiful video and insight xx
I did it with you, Sophie. I can’t believe it’s already 300k! You deserve it, really. It’s impossible to imagine you as overly materialistic, but it’s probably why you‘re such a good teacher about all this. Great timing for your new channel.
I did the capsule wardrobe with you, and I love it. I also saw my wardrobe transform. I have never experienced having so much ease with being able to dash out of the house, or pack to travel for any reason.
We also eat out very deliberately, but only when we are out and about anyway. That’s something that I implemented a while ago. It’s very freeing to not waste money because society expects you to. Happy Holidays, thank you for everything this year!
I'm so happy you're on this journey with me :)
Thank you for saying "low buy year" instead of "no buy year". Good tips.
I did a few no buy months last year but i actually started embracing that concept back in 2020 😄
It helped me to have a mindset shift in which i realized i do not need so many things and even if you're not making frequent impulse buys, your house can still accumulate clutter. So i decided to sell my preloved items and during the no buy months i kept the money for my saving. It was a beautiful experience. This time around i wanna make it a No Buy Year, only spending money on what's truly necessary / replaceable items ❤
I can definitely relate to you on detachment. Not being attached to a thing gives me the freedom to explore beyond the materialism world. Merry Christmas! Live joyfully :)
My spending habits have shifted to a more frugal perspective in 2021. It is interesting to see that one doesn’t necessarily need to purchase everything they desire. Your channel has helped me adopt a minimalistic attitude in several aspects of my life, in the which case I am grateful fir you. I look forward to your new channel and hope you will share some of your philosophical ideas in your commentary. Also at 1:00 the black dress looks great on you.
Once you stop wasting money on unnecessary things, you get to invest/spend it somewhere else that will benefit you more or give you more pleasure. Buying things can give you an instant rush of joy, but it does not last very long. Buying something that you do need or will benefit you continually will always be there to remind you of what a good decision that was. Good vid :)
I think money should be spent on experience!! Whatever that looks like
for each individual❤️ Travel , food , … Love your channel 😊
I agree with you! food is one of our favorite experiences ❤️
Beautiful transparency Sophie! You are helping so many here! Much love & respect 💞
im doing it in 2022 and this video resonates with me so much! i want to focus on other things instead of wasting money on random impulse purchases that don't bring me long term happiness. also so so happy to have seen your growth on this channel!!
Planning for another challenge in 2022! Thank you so much Megan for always supporting 😍
Hi Sophie, I listened to what you said and agree with you on re thinking what’s truly important. Too much stuff truly clutters our space and minds. I feel like it’s ok tho to have things in your home that surround you and bring joy. To me, my home is my sanctuary and I feel good having things that help to make that space feel homey. I enjoy your content and look forward to your next channel as well.
Watching from Michigan 🦌❤️
I think doing these challenges helps us narrow down even more what's truly important to us. I agree with you that having things to create a cozy atmosphere is important :)
Thank you for this video. I think we all catch ourselves buying things we don't need. Spending is a habit so it makes sense that not spending is a habit that can be achieved, too. Def making that change a priority 😌 Thank you for the inspiration! Xx
You're so right! it's a habit and sometimes we spend unknowingly
Please continue to encourage us to be minimalists & reduce spending on unnecessary things.
I absolutely...LOVE your shorter videos as well.
Thank you for sharing!!!
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Thank you for this video. I did not do a low buy this year since I thought my 2020 low buy would just carry over to 2021. Boy was I wrong! I went overboard with shopping on accessories. This time I will write out rules for my low buy year and hopefully create more mindful spending in my life. Thank you again for all your inspiration! I look forward to watching your videos on your new channel. Happy Holidays!
I'll be doing another low buy year with new rules :) Hopefully we can motivate each other haha
Your videos ground me so much and I’m so happy I found you because I also live in Hawaii and sometimes it’s hard to find relatable channels living on island.
So true! I also love finding other creators from Hawaii :) thanks Vivian
I am happy to know your announcement :) I am also looking forward to it. I want you to know that you become my inspiration throughout this year for intentional living and also decluttering our house. As a College student and still living with my parents, it's hard to do much decluttering but I am starting with my own things and you helped me with that. Thanks
Thank you so much :) you're so kind
Money spending addiction is probably one of the biggest issue for most people I think :( For my part I reverse that into a money savings challenge with as little as a single dollar up to five (5) dollars on certain currencies and over the year I saw big changes :) I make a commitment that if I can not do it with a huge amount of savings maybe I can do it small but consistency throughout the year and it works quite well for me...hehe :)
Love that idea! Yes saving becomes addicting too :)
Awesome, I did a save $5 a week challenge the other year and I felt so accomplished because I had previously had been an over spender most of my life, I ended up traveling with that money and had an amazing vacation. Aloha
I found your personal channel today. I was so happy to find it as I wanted to know what books inspire you. This is great:)
I am also grateful for people who share everything and anything. TH-cam has been the ho to learn about just about anything. Thank you.
Nice conclusion, Sophie! I want to do something similar for the coming year. I generally want to spend less money. And before I buy something, sleep on it for 1-2 days and then decide. In addition, something has to be taken off regularly before something new comes along. I don't have unlimited space * lol * Instead of buying things, my boyfriend and I want to go on a day trips in 2022. Collect memories, not things.
Join me for my low buy challenge in 2022!! I think it helps when we have motivation
I love how intentional you were with your spending! Putting a wish list definitely helps prevent impulsive buys. I've been binge watching your videos and it's been motivating me to become more minimalistic. I have bought a bit of clothes in order to create a capsule wardrobe, but it's much more intentional than my past shopping habits. One thing I"m struggling with is the deep regret I have for all the money I wasted with my bad shopping habits I used to have. Any tips on how to deal with the constant feeling of regret? Love your videos!
I also have regrets about my past purchases and felt really guilty about letting it go. But truth is, there is nothing we can do about it except to do better moving forward. I hope you're not too hard on yourself
In the end, every stage of life is to facilitate our growth. You are where you are supposed to be! :)
It's a loss, let yourself mourn it but then know you've come out from under those materialistic layers like a butterfly from a cocoon :) You needed them to grow!
I feel I am naturally very intentional with all of my purchases, and rarely purchase anything unless I've thought about it for months. I can very much relate to you because I find so much joy in eating out and while I used to eat out almost every meal pre-pandemic, I too went to 100% home cooked for a while and am beginning to realize I'd rather use the money saved from only intentional buys and using it for eating out every so often. The only two purchases I made in 2021 that I really wanted and have brought me joy are a milk frother for my coffee and the wooden hair comb you suggested in another video. Funny enough I had been needing a comb for over a year but didn't find value in the cheap plastic combs, so I didn't buy one until you mentioned the wooden one haha.
Thank you for the inspiration and am subbing to your new channel. I want to move to Hawaii part time in the coming few years and enjoy your content. Can't wait to see more!
I hope you like the wooden comb, but I still love it and use it everyday! I also love my milk frother and use it often too :) Thanks for supporting me on the other channel as well! happy holidays to you 🥰
@@MalamaLife happy holidays to you too! 🎄
Gotta love this video. I get that living below that means is very important. Decided to save away for later years. Unfortunately, our society is so wildly obsessed with living way way way way above that means!! Our society has it all wrong - sadly to say. Living below that means is the only way to go!!
agree with you! It's unfortunate that low buy has to be a challenge.
Watching you after a really tiring day is one of the luxury things for me, thank you Sophie❤️
I did a low buy challenge this year for clothes. I've bought 10 pieces this year and I'm so pleased with that. Definitely continuing my low buy in 2022. I might add some more categories too! ☺
Intruding tonnes more resourceful this year..and save...and to massively declutter..I love your video..thankyou.xxx
I am so glad you shared this video. I agree with everything you said. It made me think of all the clutter I have and need to be mindful. Thank you so much!!!🙋
a chance to start over in the new year :) thanks Josephine
This video is my ACTUAL present. First of all SO good. And second the other channel? Cannot wait! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!! happy holidays to you :) much love from Maui
I work as a housewife which means that I don't earn any money. My husband works a lot, so I'd feel guilty if I spent too much money. I've always thought that I'm lucky for not to have a salary: so I can't fall in the tentation of buying too much
The most salient point to me is continually editing one's life. When you noted that things may have given you pleasure in the past, but no longer did, it brought home to me that one must reassess needs and likes at some reasonable interval of time.
The introduction spoke to my soul . I have found myself constantly buying stuff and it feels like I can’t stop.
Hope you join my low buy challenge with me
@@MalamaLife I will. It could be the turning point I desperately need.
... and dining out doesn't clutter the house!
so true! :)
Your voice is so calming and your choice of background music is very nice. Thanks for sharing your experience and the beautiful landscape.
I’ve been seeing this everywhere. I firmly believe it’s a sign for me. I really have to try this low buy in 2022.
Yes!! I'm planning to do it again in 2022
Low buy year starting shortly, the addiction to things is hard to break - I am pretty minimal to most people. However I know there are ways we can reduce spending even more. Great video on discovering whats important to spend on vs not.
join me for 2022 low buy challenge
This video showed me how low spending is not about depriving but enriching, thank you. I did click the link for your second channel, unfortunately it isn't there :(
The problem has been fixed :) the link should work now. Thank you for supporting!
@@MalamaLife Thank you x
Seeing this now - Happy New Year. Your entire channel and presentation speaks to my soul. Wanting/needing to move later this year, so seeing this in January is a good start towards achieving my goal.
Wishing you all the best! 🥰
Aww 🥰 love your energy Sophie! You are so calming and relaxing. I love learning from you. And congrats on your new channel and sticking to your goals. That is wonderful!😌👏🏻🎉🌈
Thank you so much :) you're so sweet.
Looking forward to the new Chanel and already subscribed. I can’t imagine why you would want to live anywhere else. It looks like paradise. Thank you for your post. 🙏
Thank you so much for supporting!! new content to come :)
Great Video, my wife and I are constantly cleaning and giving away anything we do not use anymore. Rule in our house is - If we have not touched it or worn it within the year, we do not need it" Take care and good luck with the new channel looking forward to watching it.
Great rule to filter out what's essential and what's clutter. thank you for supporting Nino
Hello 👋
A great channel and a wonderful woman 👌
Very interesting and helpful tips 🥇
i don't know English so much, but i like to see you straight at your eyes while you are talking to everyone and me on your TH-cam channel. hehe!
thanks for your videos!
It's quite hard looking straight into the camera for too long. It looks like a black hole haha
Thank you Sophie ❤
I think you are beautiful in your skin, and glad you broke free from consumerism, and wastefulness.
I’ve loved you channel and your take on minimalism and low buy / slow living. I crave this pace in life very much. Can’t wait for the fun content on your new channel!
Thank you so much Valli :) appreciate you. Happy Holidays
You have a different perspective and there is something inside. The university is cool..that I have known since the first video..I wish you success in what you do.🌱🌍👁️❤️🤗👍
💕 thank you so much!
I did find that the pleasure of eating out was the time you spent with someone and the conversation that happens because you are allocating time without distractions. I often found that the enjoyment was not necessarily from the food, which was not that much better that what I could do at home. So my take home from this was to allocate the time to eating at home. No phones or TV at the main meal of the day. Take time to be together.
I did not participate in a low buy year this year. I actually recently heard the term low buy year in the last few months. My word for 2022 is simplify. It was really helpful to hear about your low buy year as I start mine. I can’t wait!
I'll be starting a new low buy in 2022 too! join me :)
Thank you for all the wonderful videos you have uploaded so far on this amazing n beautiful channel. They have taught me so much about life and how little I actually need to be happy everyday. Can't wait to check out your 2nd channel!! I wish you lots of love n success for it!! Merry Christmas Sophie!!!! ❄️☃️🎄
aw thank you so much Suzy! Merry Christmas to you. Really grateful for your support
I knew you lived in Hawaii but I am pleased you are on Maui! My favorite island. I hear you with dining out. It’s a hard one to cut out of the budget but you made a good point, cutting out a joy with a loved one doesn’t make sense. I’m excited for your new channel! I’d love to see more day to day in hawaii. ( I hope to move there someday). I will go subscribe!
Maui is really special :) yes! more day to day content. Thank you for supporting!
Thank you for your content. I’m trying to get my life together and turn it around. To make huge positive life changing decisions and building good habits that will being wealth, peace and freedom into my life.
I have so much to learn but I know I have to do this for myself. However I’ve been living my life is not sustainable and isn’t one that gives me peace or happiness.
I love eating out. I wouldn't change that for no one. We have to do whatever makes us happy. It's never a one size fits all. I spend very little on clothing, so this frees up money for the things I love. Another great video.
I think I needed to watch this. I’m at the same point as you were. I spent way too much money over the last year. I think I somehow wanted to feel new, fresh, a change, moving. Because I wasn’t able to sit still and to rest, to accept the “now”. My mental health isn’t good at the moment. Often my apartment is full of boxes, some of them not even opened yet because I felt too exhausted. It got out of hand. I feel embarrassed to have order so much stuff this year. I want to change this. Want to donate or safe more money instead of spending it on stuff. So from now on I will remember this video every time I wanna order something. And think twice. And ask myself if I really want or need it. So thank you for being honest about this topic.
Perfect time to do this the past year everything is going up . I’m spending about an extra 800 a month . Even the dollar store is up 25 cents . I had to pick up extra hours . I’m exhausted. Thanks for the video.
Your voice is so soothing. Love your videos.
Thanks Sarah ❤
This video makes me ponder about my New Years Resolution. What challenge should I do for myself? 🤔 And I am so excited to know more about you Sophie! 😍
Thank you Stella! You have been so supportive. I have so many challenges I want to do for myself, so I have to narrow it down :) I can't wait to see what you will challenge yourself to do! Wishing you the best holidays and happy new year! 🧡

Great video and mind set / life style changes.
What makes it even more challenging is having children to support / expenses.
Beautiful sentiment!! Great video!!
Thank you for sharing this episode ❤️ I stopped wasting money on unnecessary stuffs since 2012 and only focused on what I need. It's kinda habit tho.
Good for you. I think it's really valuable especially in our culture of abundance
Such a lovely surprise. Thank you for always sharing your positive energy!

Thank you for another video 🌺🌴 I didn’t find your channel until a few weeks ago so I didn’t know about the low spending challenge however my husband and I have been on the journey of becoming debt free. It’s super stressful at times but following a plan brings me a lot more peace and gratitude for the things I already have. We are not perfect but we admit when we fall off the wagon. Which gets us back on track pretty quickly.
I’m excited for your new channel and will definitely subscribe to it! Happy holidays to you and your family 💛
Thank you so much for supporting! I hope you join me for low buy challenge in 2022. My husband and I are also trying to pay off a HELOC while minimizing my life, and doing the low buy this year really helped :)
Thank you for all the beautiful content! ♥️
I reduced my spending by copying you to to just buy an item after I consumed my current one; or rethinking before purchasing.
You are truly admirable!

Thank you so much Michelle! 💗 wishing you all the best in 2022
I also accumulated too much stuff - clothes, make-up, shoes... Always getting bargains and buying because it was cheap - I LOVE a good bargain. Most times I would feel guilty after I bought something; and there was also the stress of keeping it organized, arranging space... It started to get too stressful. I read somewhere that when you're getting rid of things you don't use/need, pick up the thing you're thinking of getting rid of and see how it makes you feel, or the first memory that comes to mind. If it's negative energy, definitely get rid of it. It works!!! These days when I do go to shops and see something I like, I stop and think if I really need it, do I really like it - and like it ON me, and if yes can I wait and get it some other time and maybe forget about it eventually. I do the same with eating out - do I really feel like having a coffee, or eat out... If yes, then definitely do it. Stop and think before spending money. Like you say, you feel proud of yourself, and much less anxious :)
I guess it really comes down to thinking before we act.
first of all, i needed this! I am doing a low buy for 2022 and am preparing for it! you have inspired me so much! secondly, your announcement is so exciting! i can't wait!!
Thank you Susie! I'll be setting my rules for 2022 low buy year as well :)

Happy holidays to you :)
I love that you emphasis the balance between minimalism and also choosing what adds to your life! I always intend to be intentional with how I spend my money but you've inspired me to review that for 2022. Thank you! I will be subscribing to the second channel too. 😍 xxx
I agree. I think minimalism can be taken to the extreme, but it doesn't have to be that way.
Thank you so much Ailsa! I noticed that a lot of my spendings are out of habit, so it really helped being more intentional with my finances this year :)
