One of the closest things to a modern fairy tale, a fictional world created not from the medieval or ancient, but from the world of today, it’s politics, its history, its clashing cultures, its nightmares and fever dreams. A tale not of kingdoms, gods, and romance, but of nationhood, class conflict, capitalism, and the power of identity within an alienated industrial society. A fractured mirror in which we see our innermost demons and angels, our “Furies.”
    A true masterpiece.

You forgot one thing. The ghosts and their home in the entropic desert known as the pale. Of all the things you describe they will eventually be eaten by the never ceasing all consuming haunting from a past that cannot be forgotten. A rarified mark, like a mold, left behind by the gods you would so quickly try to paint over with your petty quick to rot substitute for real meaning... "ideology."
All of it pales in comparison to a love that refuses to die even in its rasping scraping death. To a love that eats away at the heart, turning the already fermented misery of the world into a potent ambrosia of suffering. A man, struggling not with what he believes, but how to live in a world utterly destroyed by belief, possessed by its spirit in the most metaphysical and phantological ways. A world always on the brink of apocalypse but seemingly never fading, only shrinking smaller and smaller into itself as the quiet creeps in after the bloodshed.
And yet... even in this world, stinking with the glorified poison of impassioned arguments and misbegotten intents there are still small pockets of wonder to be found, if only one looks closely. If you think the point of the game was the ideology then you were too busy playing commissar to see the real depth of its wonder. There is still magick in this world, still reason to be hopeful, to have fun, to laugh even. There is still room for beauty and mystery in this dying existence. Even maybe for the divine.
If thats not the ending you got, all power to you, but you're doing it wrong. I dont just mean the game in this sense.

Kim is probably the best companion in gaming for me- I actually felt a deep bond (that scene on the balcony will always stick with me; just sharing a quiet moment with someone you just met, yet feel as if they were an old friend ) and sought his approval/mindful of his perception of me… which made the ending so satisfying - and that’s coming from someone who never played a point-and-click back when the game didn’t really have voice-overs… his characterization was so well done. Really made me appreciate my IRL friends all the more. You gotta have friends in this world, I’ve always said that.

Disco Elysium's devblog. The Pale will essentially consume the world in about 28 years unless The Detective changes things somehow. And regardless of whether by somehow he *does* or not, Shivers implies that instead Revachol will just be swallowed up by an atomic blast further into the future.

Harrys presence in the world is what causes its destruction, its implied the "creation" of him jumpstarted the pale, or maybe even created it. And the 2mm hole in the world (7 key locations of churches in the name of Dolores Dei ) will expand and consume the world with nothing aka Pale.

*If you haven't completed the game yet than I'd advice against looking at the rest of this comment*
I like that the title screen shows you the city from the perspective of the Deserter sitting at his perch in the sea fortress. It's a weird and unexpected bit of foreshadowing given that the significance of what you're seeing (or the fact that it has any significance to the story to begin with) doesn't become apparent until the very end of the game.

    • @irisidem6580
      @irisidem6580 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

definitely really late, but i think it's also interesting due to the fact that there are a lot of parallels between Harry and the Deserter. They're both desperate men, being destroyed slowly from the inside out by their inability to leave the past behind. It's no mistake that Harry's nap is placed right before this guy. The deserter shows about, and the game basically says "If you keep letting the past define who you are you are going to end up like this man, rotting from the inside out. For the sake of yourself and others you need to keep moving forward in life."

  • @ravenb3936

I had such a weird dream about this game once. an alternate ending where you, cuno, and his dad are in a bunker, trying to prevent a nuke from destroying revachol. The ultimate decision to stop it or let it free boil down to what skills presented themselves the most, and you as a player must hear what each of them has to say before making your final decision. In my dream, Physical instrument explained this would be the great filter, as only the strongest men who survive the apocalypse will be worthy of rebuilding society. Empath tried to talk the player out of it, telling you that the innocent people of revachol are only trying to get by, and it would not be fair to abruptly end their day-to-day simply based on the "what if?" of politics. Conceptualization didnt mention the people at all, but instead pondered how the streets of the war torn city would look in flames, buildings crumbled more than they already are, the mix of ash and blood highlighting the nuclear shadows of people who never knew today would be their last. Perception tuned into the mechanics of the abandoned bunker you reside in, hearing the sirens go off, the rusted doors of the missles silo slowly opening to reveal the world ending instrument. It reminded you that whatever decision you make, it must be quick, otherwise, it will be made for you. Too bad it was just a dream...

Hours just remembering her smile. Her warmth as the morning sun shined on her skin, glowing like some kind of goddess. Some nights her memory felt real and time would just stop. If i was high enough i could feel her again. Gaze into those hazel eyes where i lost myself.
Im better now. Its been years since i felt alive but at least i didnt pull the trigger years ago. Ill get better, I knows this. Its just so hard. Still, i love this game. I love life even if it feels almost impossible at times. Im a zombie now, but i know someday ill be alright.

SPOILER: The perspective of the title screen is from the island where the deserter is observing everyone through his scope. When I first learned this, my goddamn mind was blown.

Ending with thr phasmid was cool but the ending with the cops felt lackluster tho. That's my only gripe with the game. I hope they either make a sequel or another game in this universe at is very well crafted and interesting

There will definitely be another game set in this world. ZAUM mentioned that they aren't done with it yet. Plus, Kim mentions in the final debrief if you try to recruit him that Harry's precinct would be the best place to work in order to be ready for what's to come to Revachol.

It wasn't really an ending. The real ending was the discussion with the Deserter and the Phasmid, the part with the other cops was more of a recap and a setup for another game.

@@TheButterMinecart1 It felt like an ending to me but that's because of my choices in the game. Jean helps Harrier to find himself *fully* and even provides some closure to him and Dora. It ended with a solved case. Kim, the friend of your new birth, and Jean, the friend of your old life, and you walk to the car arm in arm.

The track almost sound as if its bleeding out, it is hurting, howling and anguish dripping out of his own sounds... You hear it as a last scream of help, nad you can do nothing more than be with it for the rest of its short melody, understanding why its hurtful.
I dont know how, but this music encapsulate dread, pain, sadness, melancholy and the most pure, distilled solitude of a dying world.
