    OMG!! I can't have a garden where I am because of a shared yard with dogs, no digging up etc, I am on a limited budget too. The Walmart bags and kiddie pool are AWESOME! I am so excited now for even just a small "garden". Some tomatoes and cucumbers, butter crisp lettuce, I wonder what else I'll plant now lol. THANK YOU!!

    Buddy you hit the nail on the head, my grandfather grew everything in burlap sacks. He explained this to me 20 years ago. He also said Ruts lol he would tell ya, he farmed all his life and when he couldn't run the equipment to plow and disk his garden he went to burlap sacks. Had he known how good it worked and how much less maintenance he needed when he got "dialed in" he would have done it that way from the start. Miss that guy he taught me so many great things lol Thanks for sparking those memories.

    Great job Larry! My concern, for myself, is using buckets that aren't food grade plastics or bag (Walmart etc)that can leach dies. I know you lined the buckets with landscape cloth which may contain toxic plastics. Plastics with the triangle symbol and numbers 3, 6 or 7 should never be used. Numbers 1, 2, 4 or 5 are totally safe.

    Now I finally understand the point of these heavy fabric "grow bags". I looked at them when I first saw them and thought: Now that's just stupid, why would anyone use these, growing stuff in them will never work because it isn't watertight.

    Your half right and half wrong..... Fabric bags allow more oxygen to the root structure, good for the plant. However the air does not prune the roots, it's the uv light that trims the roots, when the roots get near of poking threw the bag the uv light kills the tips of the roots before it can poke all the way threw, so it's light pruning...…..

    • @erikvanvelzen
      @erikvanvelzen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nonsense. It works under grow lights too, and those have no UV.

    Hello Larry, I understand that this is an older video but recently I have watched th-cam.com/video/47qiwqKRef0/w-d-xo.html (yes, it is in French but it has English subtitles which are very well written). The cell from that video sends it's "roots" to search the surroundings for the available food sources and later thickens the connections which bring "food". The plants have multiple types of roots. The thin ones develop first and search for food. I think that the air pruning works because in contact with air the thin roots discover the boundaries of the container due to the difference in humidity and after the mapping is complete the plant goes into "reproduction mode" (flowers/fruits) with the available resources. If this supposition is correct your technique makes a lot of sense because that's what we do as humans as well. As soon as we find what we need, even if it is not much, we try to settle and make it work with what we have the best we can.

    This is good information. I have great success growing in containers but I think developing another system where the roots can be exposed to air would be great. The only problem I have it the clay pots I have (which are very porous, but allow air into the root system) crack easily. I would like something attractive, economical, while allowing air to the roots. This video has inspired me! :))

      Rainbow Gardens You didn't say how big you pot is. Clay pot that is. If you want to try the air system, before filling the clay pot with your favorite soil, take some landscape fabric and cut a piece that will go around the inside of the clay pot, and overlap it. Then, in relation to the pot, get some thick sticks that will go from top to bottom, maybe 1" or 2" thick and put them in between the landscape fabric and the pot. When putting the soil in try not to pack it around it to tight so the air will go to the bottom of the pot. You might have to put 2 or 3 sticks in to keep the soil from packing around it and cutting off the air. Give it a shot and see if that works for you and keep an eye on it and you just might think of a better fix than that but that might get you started. Good Luck, and Gardening............Namaste.............................

    This is not viable in a hot climate. I have to water every damn day (gallons per plant) in heavy soil with the soil covered.
    There's no possible way to water this design enough in a container exposed like this. It would take at least 3 times per day and I bet the plant still dies.

    Larry, people are saying you have to have a 15- 20 gallon grow bag for tomatoes. Is that your experience? it looks like your tomatoes do well in smaller containers... i have 5 gallon buckets with holes I could use

  • @mininaturalfarm
    @mininaturalfarm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I believe it is more about aeration than root pruning. Roots need oxygen for respiration, period. But your bags will leak moisture too, so you end up using more water. A better solution is to use a bigger pot.

    • @thomasmoorhead42
      @thomasmoorhead42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think the point is you can use a 5 gallon bucket instead of a 20 gallon bucket or whatever the plants max root size would demand. If you want to plant your tomatoes in a bunch of comically large pots go ahead.

    i use my old plastic containers
    and cut holes in them.
    i use a razor knife and make 1/2 in cuts
    best resultts, make 2 cuts 1/16in apart
    it acts like a larger hole, but keeps the soil in.
    i make about 20 double-cuts (40 in all) in each 3 gal container.

    Hi Larry from Britain,
    I'm going to build a rain gutter system in my green house this year for my tomatoes. I'm going to feed it off a header tank with a half strength tomatoe feed mixed in. Would this type of pruning work with the humidity caused by the rain gutter system keeping the humidity levels up by the water evaporating?
    Thanks for the informative video.
    Regards,
    Bill.

    I plan to use this air pruning system in 5 gal. buckets + 5 gal. reservoirs below, wicking up thru a hole in the bottom. I am looking for the best wick. Since no one is doing this, I am on my own. If I find a wick I will not have to water for weeks, in some cases, months.

    • @FusionDeveloper
      @FusionDeveloper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard to use synthetic for a wick, but people have done cotton rope and cotton shirts. You can also buy plant wicks. What I think may be the best is to use both cotton and synthetic. The cotton probably wicks better but the synthetic should last longer. For a test, I used Yarn for a little houseplant and it seems to be working better than manual watering and is the healthiest houseplant I have. I started another test using 6 strands of cotton twine and 1 strand of yarn (since I ran out of yarn) about 4 days ago. So far, I am loving it, because I don't have to figure out when to water, i just wait until the water level decreases and add water to it.
      My only advice for a setup, is to wick from the bottom, because I have seen pictures of people with "ideas" where they have a container of water up high and run strings down to their plants (and to me, that looks like it would drain gallons of water a day for tiny plants, flooding them, but that is just based on how gravity and siphoning works, I haven't tested this).
      I am NOW considering trying to merge Bottom Wick and Air Pruning and see how that turns out.

    • @1voluntaryist
      @1voluntaryist 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cotton rots. It "might" last a season. I plan for years. I am wicking for a tomato plant that needs gallons a day, so I use a 1.5" rope. Commercial plant wicks I researched are just shoe laces. I had to spend many hours reading & thinking, then I bought ropes & tested.

    I have been really looking into this with potato towers... i researched harvest vids... those that had wooden 4 foot tall potato towers with no holes all had very very very poor harvests... found a lady on youtube growing them in tall plastic trash bins with lots of holes in them... she had amazing harvests. She filled 1.5 X 5 gallon buckets with potatoes per garbage can. Harvest time speaks volumes.

    The only problem is nothing is ‘food grade’ here, lots of toxic chemicals in those bags & buckets leaching into the soil & food you’ll eat. The fix: food grade buckets from box stores, & 100% cotton fabric (no dyes). 👍🏼

    Wow This is honestly one of the best video's on the subject I have seen. I have found myself caught on the self watering 5 gallon pots because of time constraints, But maybe? Watering could give way to air pruning if it would improve my results. Strangely I wonder why my ground growing which doesn't have the air pruning ability grows so well?

    Thanks for this, Larry! My spouse and I recently got into indoor gardening(mostly flowers, and last night we planted over a dozen different kinds of beans). We have a chestnut tree we planted from a seed a couple weeks ago that has already sprouted and is about a foot tall now, and we've been worried about having a big enough pot. The air pruning seems like it will be a really good system until it is ready to be moved outside. This will also help with everything else we are growing. Again, thanks a lot!
