    Unlike other beat'em ups this game has the learning curve of a more technical 1vs1 fighting game, once you learn to control the cyborg and get used to the mechanics the game is quite fun.
    As mentioned the main problem is how repetitive it is, specially when one of the enemies you will always see is the insect body with the somersault legs and the normal hand.
    The gap in the first level can be jump if you use the flying kick in mid air.
    You also can rebuild the enemies you destroy if you combine the frontal kick and the grab command, it is very useful in co op.

    • @samfrito
      @samfrito 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dude, you nailed it. This is still one of my favorites just for all the interesting things you can do, like helping put your fallen companion back together, but you have to hurry or his core will explode. This is a repetitive game, but plays well once you get it down. I still remember how a friend and I pretty much cannibalized every enemy bot, one took the arm, one took the body for a streak of about 5 minutes and laughed constantly. Great game for the time and should have gotten a sequel with more variety in the levels.

    • @phammcast
      @phammcast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MUCH BETTER representation of the game. I agree about the levels, but that's the only glaring flaw I can think of! All games are repetitive if you simplify them as such, hell, LIFE is repetitive! If you pay attn, we all basically do the same shit every single day with some minor variation here and there. I hate when ppl label a game "repetitive" when it's no difference in repetition that any other game. That should be reserved for games that deserve it, not this one. YOU BOTH GET IT!

  • @OsamaCanella

    Here is a cool trick that the video didn't show: Once an enemy was first destroyed, you could REASSEMBLE it if you Kicked it (A + back - or was it front) to raise part of its body (legs), then crouch (Down + C) and then press B over its upper body to put his torso back on it. This would revive the enemy and it was a second opportunity to later extract its arm or rip the torso (for health). Or just kick it twice to make it blow.
    Man, I played a lot this game when I was young at a friend's house, and I gotta say it was one of the best co-op experiences I had at the time. Together, we figured out all the moves (since the game was rented and we didn't have a manual OR spoke any English).
    Plus, we ignored all the flaws of the game, pointed very well by the video, because the combat was just so fun.
    We died a lot at those holes on the ground, but later we figured out you could pass them with any legs, as long as you did a double jump, followed by a B attack (the timing was a little hard, but it was doable).
    The combat was the best part, at least for me. Being able to switch everything but your torso allowed for a lot of customization and once you got used to holding A and pressing a direction to do the different moves, the game got a lot more enjoyable.

    • @samfrito
      @samfrito 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reassembly animation was such a cool thing too. Usually games of this era had such limits and Cyborg Justice was there giving you opportunities to rebuild the enemies over and over to consume energy and get your life back... aren't you able to even increase your stock of lives this way?

    • @chancepaladin
      @chancepaladin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      chopping off and equipping their offhand was always fun, because they have offhands that you can't get through the normal menu. Rebuilding them was fun too. You can't play it like a beat-em-up as much as you can like a really long robot pokemon game. heh.

      I'm the opposite but with the SNES, I only know the big famous games, or at least I only did before discovering this channel. But even for the Mega Drive he covers so many games that nobody else on TH-cam does, so whenever I need something new to play I go watch his videos again to try and find some game that's lesser known but still great. And it's always fun to just binge his videos for hours at a time anyway. There's all these little games that went under the radar but are worth playing today. And he's not one of those guys who plays retro games with the nostalgia goggles on and enjoys "Nintendo hard" for its own sake, if a game is bad by today's standards he'll say so, if it's clunky and full of unfair BS that isn't real difficulty but just cheap difficulty then he'll let you know. Luckily there are enough games from the old days that actually were designed properly and so are still great to play.

    I get the impression this game was mimicking several japanese games that have clunky mech controls, but didn't understand how to make the clunky feel more like 'heavy', which the better japanese mech games felt like. The slow animations would work here if the enemies didn't have such short recovery times. Only the player has 'heaviness' of movement, but the enemies don't? That's not cool. As for the repetition of the game, I think all beat em ups suffer from this if they go on too long, it's just that CJ draws attention to it with it's lackluster stages whereas other games hide it with the variety of places to beat up enemies, including cliffs and rivers to throw enemies into, conveyor belts, etc. This has virtually none of that.

    • @auralunaprettycure

      Jeremy Landry agreed when I saw this it immediately reminded me of Heavy Nova on genesis. The thing is though, I actually like Heavy Nova. It's bad but it just has way more variety. That game is a a huge guilty pleasure for me tbh

    I remember as a kid being pumped for this game. Every issue of EGM had a poster of a robot with a kids face yelling, with a buzzsaw on her arm cutting up other robots. It looked great! Then I rented it and it was a mess to play. Picking up pieces and using said pieces was a mystery. To do half of the stuff in the trailers requires fatality like moves from early MK games, which were hard as hell.

    Holy crap, I can't believe this game is on the channel, I love this one. It's clunky but the AI is easily manipulated, the moves are cool, and the final boss is awesome.
    Also, pro-tip, retro Gamepro style: to get across the big gap with anything not the high jump legs, you gotta jump and do the drop kick in the air. It gets you more distance on your jump.

    I used to live down the road from novotrade. They actually had a Sega store downstairs. It was in Budapest. I used to go there, and got in trouble for playing the games. Hungarian stores didn’t like kids just playing. If you wanted to see a game run, the clerk at the store would play it and talk you through how amazing that game was. Didn’t know they were a game developer until I got to the age that I would read the fine print on my copy of Ecco the Dolphin.

    Ahhh yes, Cyborg Justice. I remember having this game when I was young. Loved it. Enjoyed ripping enemies apart. Not a robot limb was spared and at the end of it all punch a brain in the face. The buzz saw and the pneumatic legs was the best combo, by the way. If you wanted to go the Texas Chainsaw Massacre route anyway

    That pit in the beginning can actually be cleared with any legs by jumping and then doing an attack that extends your air distance. Also you can reconstruct defeated enemies, allowing you to always gain health from their torso after you've defeated them the second time. A lot of things you can do in the game even beyond all the different mechanics already displayed.

    This game was quite fun to play when I was younger. I believe it was also released as a budget title ($20) upon release; as well as a few others such as Fatal Labyrinth.
    If I remember correctly, you could tap hit the enemy 3 times with the b button which would stun them. This would make it easy to rip off limbs and torsos. Trying that on a boss would result in an instant reversal though. Also if you had the saw weapon, you could cut their other arm off with it when stunned. It was funny watching them trying to attack armless. :)
    Given the number of moves in the game, I thought the controls were pretty good for only having 3 buttons to work with. As you said though, they do take a little bit to master.

    I remember playing this almost to death with a friend back in the day. Eventually we DID beat it. I also clearly remember at one point we succeeded in de-torsoing a boss robot (and while I can't confirm this I believe it wasn't the stage 1 boss), though it is admittedly super risky since the boss can just as easily dismember you. And if YOU get de-torsoed your DON'T respawn with another life.

    I played this game so many times. It's important to choose the right legs in the beginning if you can't make those jumps in stage 1. But later you want to grab different legs. Yeah the characters couldn't be more generic, the controls are overly complex and it feels like style over substance but it's distilling the beat'em up genre down to its essence and then letting you make your own avatar. That's pretty cool in its own right.
    Now it's not a great game, but if you put some time into learning it you can have some fun with this game and a friend.making those jumps with a friend is a much harder feat than doing it solo but I've done it and when you put stage 1 behind you it's really satisfying.

    It does have a tasty flow to it but yea, it took ages and a lot of manual reading to get to a stage where it's fun. Co-Op really helps in that regard.

    I have this game from my youth. If you get the controls down with the right combination of parts you can be pretty OP. Rental stores didn't have Sega games so you played what you had, and the slow combat was slow enough my much younger sister could play co-op as well.

  • @OddballEddie
    @OddballEddie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking back into it, I think this is a game that needed to have more buttons on the controller for some of the moves. I liked how well animated the cyborgs were and how you can pull them apart and take their parts. If they'd make a sequel as an indie game, there's potential for an awesome game that fixes the issues with the original.

    Pneumatic legs are not needed for the gap at 4:12, a properly timed jump-kick will do it...barely, lol
    Some things weren't mentioned that I feel are important
    -absorbing the torso is the only way to get health and lives
    -the big legs are all you need for the whole game, trap don't work on them
    -both the crusher arm and the saw can be used to remove the SECOND arm after you pulled the first off
    -kick once when they are a pile(makes their legs "stand up"), then pick up the torso and put back on the legs to continue(works as a co-op "revive" and to get specific parts, quickly...eventually explodes, lol)
    -only the boss can use the laser from it's chest, you can have the same body(can't remember all the names, it was 20+ yrs ago, lol) but the laser can't fire...I think
    -frog body + crusher arm + big legs = the best(cut off the Quasimodo 2nd arm for the coolest "near symmetrical" look, both are 3 pointed and look sharp), IMO
    I don't miss this game, The Surge(1&2) is better, Dark Souls is ever better than that(no limb ripping, tho).

    You can get across those pits in the first level with a jump kick regardless of which legs you have
