Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities. Kashi, its ancient name, was associated with a kingdom of the same name of 2,500 years ago. The Lion capital of Ashoka at nearby Sarnath has been interpreted to be a commemoration of the Buddha's first sermon there in the fifth century BCE.
Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed.
It might have been in existence even earlier, since it finds mention in the Rig Veda (c. 1700 - 1100 BC), and recent excavations in nearby sites suggest earlier estimates. For perspective, Varanasi was thriving more than 1600 years before the fall of the Roman Empire in Europe.
