Old airport is still there. Its nearby. I have not heard what they are going to do with it. However they are both still at Lungi so you need to take a boat to mainland.

If she has to wait a few hours for the Mercy Ships van to come pick her up, is there a safe place where she can wait at the airport after exiting customs & immigration? Thanks!

Yes, absolutely. There is a restaurant with seating just outside of customs. Many people also do wait outside.
