I know how you feel I missed both Doaist Mi & The Scorpionlord as I didn't think Daoist was even a boss, and just went up the steps to fight Duskveil which skipped Scorpionlord. The game has an enormous amount of content so it's pretty easy to miss stuff so don't feel bad. I'm looking forward to fighting Scorpionlord and other bosses I missed for the first time in my NG+ as I let them kill me so I could continue recording bosses!

You might have killed an enemy around the time you collected the talisman and the enemy dropped the shield, otherwise that's really odd! What you get after the Talisman's is that secret boss, a trophy, and behind him is the Celestial Nonary Pill which permanently increases maximum stamina.
Sounds like once you beat this chapter the talisman's get locked off behind invisible walls? It can be frustrating the game doesn't give warnings like the Rat Captain not being alive so you can fight him if you exhaust all the dialogue with an NPC in Ch. 2, or Apramana Bat disappearing once the pig separates from you in Ch. 3, or Daoist Mi disappearing as well once you fight The Duskveil in Ch. 4. There's a bunch of tips for you though for your NG+ run or anyone else reading.

Same for me. I can see the talisman like 10 feet in front of me but can't get through the invisible barrier
