    What advice would you give?

No stripe white belt here. I've been doing 2-3 classes a week since May 2024 and doing as many open mats as I can. My 9 year old son has been doing jiu-jitsu for roughly 2 years. He's been to 3 comps and has placed top 3 in Gi and No Gi all three times. A couple of months ago, I decided I wanna give this a shot. Winter comp is December 7th, 2024. So that would give me roughly 7 months of training. I'm a big guy, meaning overweight. When I started, my weight was 286 lbs. The heaviest I've been is 296 lbs. I'm 5'10. Since starting, I've lost some weight. Then I told my coach, "I wanna compete in December." He said, "Alright, let's roll." Meaning I wanna see where you're at... So we set the timer and went. After 2 3-minute rounds, I was dying. The tournament has you do 5 min rounds. So he sat me down and had a talk with me. "He said look you catch on fast. You're strong. you're improving every time I see you, but I gotta be real with you." You gotta start eating healthy and exercise more." I see you walk in with a McDonald's cup every class, so you need to take things more seriously."Not the tournament, not just jiu-jitsu, but life."Embrace the jiu-jitsu lifestyle."You need to be healthy for your son and your wife." So since then, I've cut out everything. Only drinking water. Only eating whole foods. Nothing processed. Basically, meat, veggies, and fruit. I weighed myself this morning, and I'm at 267lbs. I feel great, I have more energy. My confidence has gone up. He was right. "Embrace The Jiu-jitsu Lifestyle" and don't look back. I look forward to competing in December and working on my gas tank in the process. 😎🫡

Wow! Fantastic story! You are someone that is receptive to advice and once is committed, stays committed. What an amazing set of qualities. You've definitely embraced the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle! Are you still planning on competing in December?

@ChasenHill that is my plan. I have a lot of work to do. I've also seen the size of the dudes I'm gonna be competing against. Any help with big opponents would be great. Take downs and simple subs would be awesome. I'll be in the 225 lbs and above weight class. Gi and No Gi. The rules say under a year of jiu-jitsu experience with no wrestling experience. Yea..., they sign up as beginner white belts and slip through the cracks. Talk about sandbagging... Anyway I have to go full bore on something or I won't do it at all. I've always been that way.

Same here. Jiu-Jitsu has forced me to eat healthier, lose weight. I even stopped smoking pot. I've never been this healthy in my life. I'm working on my 2nd stripe as a white belt

Masters 3, 2.5yr blue belt averaging one comp a year so far. Hardest part to train for imo is points. Most lower belt people like myself, in my limited experience, are rolling for the submissions and not necessarily holding positions for 3s. Small potatoes organizers like grappling industries, grappling x, or JJWL aren’t scoring on sub attempts or aggression. So that’s been a definite training-for-comp issue I’ve experienced.
Also the refs aren’t paid enough to invest themselves too heavily in the outcomes of any match, so bad calls or scores can be expected.
It’s really not a big deal tho. The most important parts are setting that training goal, making weight, testing yourself against an unfamiliar person, HAVING FUN, and going home relatively uninjured

I competed back in February 2024 at IBJFF. I was a two stripe white belt at the time. First match, my nerves got to me. The adrenaline dump gasses de out quick and my forearms lost all their strength so my grips were horrible. I was a bit overweight at the time so it felt like I was in a higher weight class that I should have been. Got owned my first match but I didn't get submitted at least. Didn't even want to go out to do my second match cause I felt super defeated, but my professor was a huge support for me and motivated me to go out there for my second match. I was able to win by flying colors. Didn't submit my opponent but did a good job controlling him and getting six points. Got third place over all and was a needed experience that helped me up my game. For anyone doing it for the first time, try to stay calm and conserve your energy. Easier said than done, but I wish I wouldn't have let my nerves get to me.

What you did took real courage and bravery. To go back out there and keep going isn't easy to do. Then to turn it into a win is even more amazing! Great insight, thank you for sharing!

Second and third times will be a bit easier knowing more or less what to expect. Good job getting out there!

@@rodrigobarba930 I thought it was a cop out to say showing up is half the battle til my second comp. I was in a bracket of 5 for nogi in the morning and it should have been the same 5 for nogi in the afternoon. Three split so I did round robin with the remaining guy. After he subbed me twice and we were on the podium, he gave me a hug n said us older guys gotta stick together 🤙
