- De Havilland's Mosquito was fast. So fast, it didn't need armament to protect itself. Then came the Hornet. Two Merlin engines, each 2,000hp. 780kph in level flight. Now 80 years later there is just one Sea Hornet left. The wooden construction was no match for time and humidity. Follow the journey with me.
Nearly 500mph in level flight? For the time that's bonkers!
Definitely a forgotten gem. I'd love to see the survivor back in the air.
I'm lucky to live five miles from Salisbury Hall where resides three complete mossies including the prototype W40501. Such a beautiful aircraft and the Hornet was it's equal in every way if not better. 😊
You are indeed lucky to be that close to Salisbury Hall. If I was that close I would spend much of my time there. I do hope to one day make a trip to the UK and Salisbury Hall will be a place I visit for at least a full day.
Edmonton represent! Love this aircraft - though Napier Sabres would have been interesting - and love your productions, Sir. Cheers.
Many thanks!
