La Suite española Op. 47 del compositor español Isaac Albéniz está compuesta principalmente de obras escritas en 1886 que se agruparon en 1887, en honor de la Reina de España. Como muchas de las obras para piano de Albéniz, estas piezas son cuadros de diferentes regiones y músicas de España. Esta obra se inscribe dentro de la corriente nacionalista relacionada con el Romanticismo. Albéniz estaba entonces bajo el influjo de Felipe Pedrell, quien lo apartó de la música de salón estética europeística y lo atrajo hacia el nacionalismo, en este caso español. Pero, por otro lado, el suyo es un nacionalismo pasado por el tamiz del refinamiento y la estilización.
Los títulos originales de la colección son cuatro: Granada, Cataluña, Sevilla y Cuba. Las demás piezas, Cádiz, Asturias, Aragón y Castilla se publicaron en ediciones posteriores y a menudo con títulos distintos. El editor Hofmeister publicó los ocho títulos de la Suite española en 1912, después de la muerte de Albéniz. Lo hizo tomando otras piezas para los cuatro títulos restantes, ya que esas piezas no reflejan muy exactamente la región geográfica a la que se refieren. Un caso muy claro es el de Asturias (Leyenda), cuyos ritmos de flamenco andaluz poco tienen que ver con la música de la región atlántica de Asturias. El Op. 47, número asignado por Hofmeister, no guarda relación con ningún tipo de orden cronológico en la obra de Albéniz, en la que los números de opus fueron dados aleatoriamente por los publicadores o por el mismo Albéniz. Algunas obras incluso aparecen en más de una colección.
En las obras que conforman la Suite española, el primer título hace referencia a la región que representan y el subtítulo entre paréntesis indica la forma musical de la pieza o la danza de la región retratada. Los subtítulos de las obras son los siguientes: Granada, serenata; Cataluña, curranda; Sevilla, sevillanas; Cádiz, saeta; Asturias, leyenda; Aragón, fantasía; Castilla, seguidillas y Cuba, nocturno. El nocturno tiene el estilo de una habanera (Cuba formó parte de España hasta 1898). La fantasía de Aragón tiene forma de jota. Asturias (Leyenda) y Cádiz (Saeta) no son muy precisas en cuanto a la relación entre la pieza y la región. A pesar del carácter artificial de la Suite Española Op.47, con el tiempo se ha convertido en una de las obras de Albéniz para piano más interpretadas y conocidas tanto por pianistas como por el público.

I'm performing Granada at a church talent show this weekend. It's a great little piece. Getting those RH arpeggios to sound like strumming guitars, like AdlR does in this recording, is not so easy. I like the freedom, and the fairly slow tempo, she brings to the piece.
This is such a masterwork overall. Every piece is a delight.

@@DimapeloManual Thanks! It went well. The piano was good quality with a nice light action, and I sang the melody more or less how I wanted it to.
Actually the arpegios do not try to emule a guitar (though it can be readed in many sites) but to resemble the noise of the jet of the fountains.

@@timward276 ¡Yes! It is the Gardens of Generalife, which are in the highest part of the Alhambra, and the Fuente de los Leones (in the plaza de los arrallanes). But when we think in fountains in Granada we spot to the Generalife.

Estas obras me traen recuerdos de cuando iba al conservatorio y me obsesioné con ellas, en mi caso en la versión de Esteban Sánchez. Estas grabaciones son excelentes también, no cabía esperar menos de Alicia de Larrocha.

Für die verbleibenden vier Titel hat er andere Stücke genommen, da diese nicht ganz genau die geografische Region wiedergeben, auf die sie sich beziehen. Ein ganz klarer Fall ist Asturien (Leyenda), dessen andalusische Flamenco-Rhythmen wenig mit der Musik der atlantischen Region Asturien zu tun haben. Op. 47, die von Hofmeister vergebene Nummer, steht in keiner Beziehung zu irgendeiner Art von chronologischer Reihenfolge im Werk von Albéniz, in dem die Opusnummern von den Verlegern oder von Albéniz selbst zufällig vergeben wurden. Also agree. The Spanish piano rep is magnificent. Goyescas and Iberia are some of the finest (and most difficult!) things ever written for the piano, and works like this suite, Mompou's Canciones y Danzas, and de Falla's Fantasía Baetica, are very nearly their equal
Obviously it is much smaller than German, Russian, or French repertoire...but the overall quality is excellent.

Does somebody know why there seem to exist two entirely different versions of this suite (The Hofmeister version and the one displayed here) when it comes to dynamic and agogic?
19:42 - anyone realised that the first line in the left-hand uses the wrong clef? it should be bass as it changed on the previous page and shows no change in the next line either but it shows treble despite playing bass notes!

Yeah, there's a wrong clef on the first system of that page.
Yes, definitely. Also, at 18:24, the last semiquaver before the chord with the fermata is written as F#, but AdL plays a D there, which does seem to fit better. Misprint? (It's a D in the Hofmeister edition, and both editions have D near the end of the [piece, just before the coda.)

man, those leaps in Asturias are scary. The rest of the piece isn't difficult, but wow, will it sound terrible if you don't hit those big leaps cleanly.
