    I remember back in 1999 I upgraded my PC in store from a P166 MMX to a K6-2 400 mhz on the same motherboard. Sadly I do not know what motherboard it was because i was a child. The K6-2 400 was significantly faster than the P166 MMX and I was very happy with the upgrade.

      I am planning a video with the K6-2 450 MHz. But I also want to run this 300 MHz version with a better configuration. But to do this, I have to short two pins on the socket. It changes the way the CPU interprets the multiplier configured on the motherboard. This will probably the next video I make for this series.

    Our P200 ran at a seemingly stable 2.5x83=208mhz. I joked about this overclock as being 4% but I knew it was a lot faster than the 8mhz increase suggested!

    Titles like Starcraft, Total Annihilation, Diablo etc would see a pretty decent jump, I'd imagine. But I'd ALSO imagine, seeing a drop in performance in Quake.
    It's sad but true that you need to hit a K6-II 350Mhz just to equal the floating point performance of a vanilla Pentium 200 in Quake. Quake II fairs better with 3D Now! support, but you wouldn't want to be playing Quake II on a Pentium 200 anyway.
    2D performance is stellar from the K6-2 and K6-3 CPU's, but sadly at the time of their release, the world was fast becoming 3D.

    It's as I thought. I know the 300Mhz variant was one of the slowest, and nobody should pass up an upgrade from a P200 to a K6-2 300, but your game didn't change much until you hit the K6-2 500Mhz or beyond level, on the SS7, in terms of meaningful, generational upgrade that will last you 2 years or so.
    The jump to Athlon or Pentium 2 required the motherboard, so lots of people took the route of spanning the SS7 system until prices calmed down, which they did with the release or the P3, especially the PPGA and the AMD Duron offerings. Myself included. Sure I was inundated with a plethora of platforms to try back then, so I resorted to benchmarking, in between playing Quakeworld like a crackhead. I continued to build newcomers to PC gaming pretty reliable and respectful systems out of the K6-2 well into 2002, the fastest 550Mhz chips could still swing it with gaming if paired with a Geforce 2MX for the most part.
    Great channel BTW. Subbed!

      I somehow skipped the K6-family and went from an Am486 DX4-100 to a Pentium II 350 and then to a Celeron 500 via Slot 1 adapter. I remember that the Pentium II couldn't run Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed - worked with the Celeron though. I definitely will try that game once I have a SS7 board!
      Quake was banned in Germany and I just never got to play it.

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitsundbolts You mean a "slocket" adapter? I remember them!
      NFS Porsche Unleashed was renamed for us as NFS : Porsche 2000. The roll that the camera did when you turned left and right, the physics of the game, what a great game! Ahead of it's time. I was never into the bling of the NFS games, all show no substance, but Porsche 2000 was a great game - a campaign of a racing game. Played it on a P2-450 server with a TNT 2 Viper 770 originally.
      Shame about Quake. WHY was it even banned? Cos of ID Software's earlier forays into Wolfenstein? What a let down. Quake was where the international gaming community started to iron out an e-sports scene. Germany had great legends like Stelam pushing the skillcap forwards. Maybe Doom and Blue were German too? I can't remember. But Stelam definitely. Most feared competitor.
      Gay ass politics, getting in the way of Human progress. Story of the ages.

    • @bitsundbolts

      Yeah, Germany unbanned Quake 2 just recently when nVidia came out with their RTX and Quake 2 got the RTX remake. Reason for banning was "realistic graphic violence" - well, it was state-of-the art back then. Just google "German game index" - ridiculous...
      I had the V550 for a long time - still have it back home in Germany - need to take it with me next time I am there on vacation.

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitsundbolts So where did you settle? I gather Germany lost you.
      Fuck RTX too. I'm glad Q2 made it as a showcase for RTX, but Nvidia charged people through the nose for effectively NOTHING, garnishing a 30 year old game with RTX, nothing a 3rd party mod team could have offered without charging people 1000% the price of the latest GPU.
      Dont get me started on THAT shit. As a true quaker, as a guy who played vs Romero back in the late 90's, played in the EC in the early 2000s in Quake III, its not about the graphics! Never was!
      We shave our heads so our hair dont get in our eyes when we FIGHT.

      Romero as in John Romero? Interesting - and rest of the comment is just gold ;)
      Will try my best to make more videos with interesting content! Thanks

    The graphs would have been easier to understand, if they were sorted by bus speed, instead of CPU speed. This would have made it easier to see the difference in speeds withing the same bus speed, since that is what you were focusing on while presenting the data. Alternatively, different colored bars for the different bus speeds might have helped the current sorting.

    nice upgrade for an older board... but voltage is the problem for most.. is this doable on most socket 7 boards?

    • @bitsundbolts
      @bitsundbolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't think it's possible on most boards. The regular Socket 7 was made for the original Pentium which had one voltage for CPU core and I/O (3.3 volts). Newer models including Pentium MMX required split voltage for CPU core and I/O (2.8 and 3.3 volts respectively). The AMD CPUs required significantly less voltage for the core (around 2.4 volts or less). So, it is important to have a board that supports split voltage which were mainly later models - or super socket 7 boards

    An AMD K6-3 would be a very nice upgrade for this mainboard. The on-Die 256kb full-speed L2 cache gives a very nice performance boost. The K6-2/3+ versions with 180 nm should also work on this mainboard with the mod bios you have flashed.

    • @bitsundbolts
      @bitsundbolts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree! I am looking for a decently priced used K6-2+ or K6-III. Some of the later models have a core voltage of less than 2V which I cannot reach with this board. I'll definitely look for one of those CPUs!

    • @retroianer3835
      @retroianer3835 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My Super Socket 7 machine has an K6-III+ 500 ANZ@550, also stable with 600 MHz, but 550 is more than enough, and also runs with the stock 1,8V Voltage.

    • @bitsundbolts
      @bitsundbolts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I've heard that those CPUs could be overclocked quite well. The P55T2P4 is only a Socket 7 motherboard, so, no support for 100 MHz FSB. I will however aim to get a 450 MHz version on this board (75MHz * 6). Congratulations on a K6-III+! They are quite rare these days.

    • @retroianer3835
      @retroianer3835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I have this CPU since a few years now. Now in 2021 not so easy to find for a good price. K6-2+ with 128kb L2 cache is easier to find. A normal K6-3 with 400 or 450 should also be enough for the P55T2P4, but these are getting hotter than the + versions, because of the larger 250 nm process. I also have a normal Socket 7 system with a Pentium MMX CPU.

    On SS7-Boards you can normally run an P233 with 100MHz FSB stable. I also had a modified 266MHz-Tillamook running at >400MHz stable. Quite interesting CPU.

      @bitsundbolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I will create more videos including using the 3DFx Voodoo 1. There was a small local computer shop that showcased games based on 3DFx glide API. It was unbelievable how games suddenly looked a lot better and ran smoother. Good times!

    Had the AMD 400. Also 3dfx.
    It was my last AMD until my Ryzen 5950. I've always been a whatever works best guy. The lower power draw then Intel and the fact that my Deep cool ak620 air cooler always does the job as I don't overclock. Try that with Intel's ovens.

      I think my CPU history was pretty balanced. Sometimes Intel and sometimes AMD. But currently also on AMD with 3700X and recently upgraded to 5950X.

    This CPU is painful for me, it is less stable. Once time its crashed when I save my homework into Floppy. My homework is total loss and I need do it again. The next day I smash it by hammer and upgrade the computer to Intel Pentium III.

      I got a better story. About 10 years ago I was filling out a form to apply to University. It was important to me, that after I got the degree, I'd go straight into a teaching job and earn my family £25k a year and secure our financial future for at least the next two decades. I called my best friend who is a decently intelligent man to come help me, and together we shared a big bottle of cider as we carved out the most impressive, persuasive declaration of intent ANY University applicant ever penned. It took us two hours, give or take, and the 2700 words were slowly compressed to a finite, limited 1000 words that even Voltaire or Philip K Dick would have been proud of.
      Then we pressed "SEND" and the website crashed, deleting our entire essay. I went white like I'd seen a ghost, my friend vomitted up the entire contents of the cider, and we sat there shivering, looking at the clock, wondering what to do next.
      To skip to the end, we penned another more hastily, nowhere near as good as the magnum we'd originally created, but it was passable enough to get me admitted to Uni, where I was successful. So all that worry was misguided.
      Glad you hammered your PC. Probably deserved it. And the hammer is NOTHING, if it's not used to hammer shit.
