Hello. Yes there are definitely con artists and fakes. There may even be a certain amount of deluded people, however, I personally as a psychic never 'read' anyone's body language etc or asked questions or fished for answers. My job as I saw it was to be a person of integrity who delivers a specific message from those in spirit. My accuracy rate was high in terms of peoples' responses to what they were told. Now for the question, why do psychics charge money? Well, in my case, it was my job of work, my way to pay my bills and keep a roofe over my head. Ask a plumber, Joiner, or othger tradesperson or service person to come to you and work for free and you'll get your answer! One of the most satisfying aspects for me was bringing people closure or comfort through my readings. YES... among psychics and mediums there are those who prey on the vulnerable but....don't lump genuine people in with these fakes! As for these stage magicians who think everyone is conning someone else, they are so skeptical and determined to debag genuine psychics that they lose track of the genuine people.

I saw a video of a guy who was pretended to be a palm reader for some jollies at university and after a few years convinced himself he was an actual doing incredibly accurate readings based on people's reactions. About 10 years in he wanted to prove to himself how good he was by telling people the exact opposite of what the palms 'said'. To his surprise the people reacted in exactly the same way as they had done before. He then realised that it was all about the presentation.

I don't know if it was written in that year or way earlier, since that particular source was already the 44th edition of the book or essay or whatever. Derren Brown went to the US, where he was unknown at the time, and advertised as a medium. About a dozen people showed up and he told them all sorts of things about their dead relatives. Several were in tears and thanking him. He then told them that he was not a medium, and told them how he did it, ending with a warning to them to be careful of mediums. The guy is brilliant. btw, some mediums don't even know they are cold reading. There are some that are sincere but are reading cues without knowing.
I believe some really think that they can do what they do, but when you are "talking to dead people and can hear them" you are ether fraud or a schizophrenic.

It all works best for cons when people start "interpreting" what the con is saying instead of letting them tell them EXACTLY what the details are and it be something they never knew, but can proven. How can something be general and specific at the same time? Simple. Say I tell you "I'm sensing something. You've been having money troubles." On the surface, that is a very general statement. Who doesn't have money troubles? But say you had recently gotten behind in bills due to an injury that caused you to take unpaid time off work. In your head, you're going to think that is what I was I must have been sensing. To you, it feels like I just made a very specific claim.

'Barnum' reading or the 'Barnam Effect' is supposed to be incredibly vague (but obviously disguised not to be so as to seem personal). His statements were *way* too specific. An older man beginning with 'B' that has a pain in the back of his chest? The one about feeling confident most of the time but being insecure some other times was better, but then he ruined it by mentioning something about feeling like an overhead camera looking down at yourself? What? Who gets that? The statements would have been fine for a studio audience, where there was a lot of people and at least one of them would identify with them (although asked as questions and fed slowly, one at a time). But this was meant to apply to pretty much anyone watching at home, and without anyone else to validate his statements, most people would think he was a terrible psychic!
I would argue they were just right, barnam statements are not always the way to go, you have to become more specific otherwise people will catch on to the vagueness. You mention something statistically likely to resonate with some people and not everyone, to get your target. Holly is the perfect target because she seemed to try to make his misses hit as well, an older man might be more likely to have a name beginning with B and indeed Holly knew one, older men always have aches and pains, I've got plenty and i'm only 24 (granted I'm unhealthy as fuck) but when you're retired you tend to let yourself go too, and back of the chest could mean a lot of different pains. The "overhead camera looking down at yourself" is probably to get people to acknowledge that as they get older they contemplate their own life and what they're doing like watching themselves. The scar on the leg is a brilliant one, because most kids especially in Holly's day were outside playing and falling off bikes and things and commonly injuring their legs. Psychics would hate me because i'm odd, stay indoors all the time and do not have the same experiences as most people haha. I remember once as an older kid (maybe 10 IDK), I got my palm read by a gypsy and she told me she could see me kicking, perhaps a footballer... I'm a little boy in the UK, of course I would be football mad, little did she know haha i hate sports, and football bores me to tears. This was a better way to show what psychics are doing, because you'll probably find a lot of the people watching at home got at least 2 or 3 hits which felt more specific, to them it will become more clear that these generic statements are just fluff. Precognition is somewhat different from the field of psychic mediums being discussed here. The psychic mediums communicate with spirits who have passed. precognition is very different, but still possible. newspapers just attribute it to "luck" when they do. sometimes people select winning numbers several times in a row, and everyone just says "wow, that was lucky".

It’s funny how when the spirits are trying to give their name, the psychic can only get vague bits of info “I’m getting a ‘J’ or a ‘G’ name...” but as soon as they’ve got specifics out the way, the spirits can then ramble off lots of specific (and generic) detail in fluency, eg “she’s saying you’re loved, she is with you at night and you’ll hear her when you’re in your bed. She’s saying she’s happy now and in a better place and no longer in any pain...”. Why can the spirits say all this info but can’t get their own name out? 🙄

Hello. Yes there are definitely con artists and fakes. There may even be a certain amount of deluded people, however, I personally as a psychic never 'read' anyone's body language etc or asked questions or fished for answers. My job as I saw it was to be a person of integrity who delivers a specific message from those in spirit. My accuracy rate was high in terms of peoples' responses to what they were told.

Hello evil B, unfortunately, as honest as I am and try to be, neither I, nor other 'true' psychics could convince mister Randi, because his tests are always 'skewed' in favour of no one winning the million dollars...a bit like the coconut shy's or other stalls at fairgrounds. Several were in tears and thanking him. He then told them that he was not a medium, and told them how he did it, ending with a warning to them to be careful of mediums. The guy is brilliant. btw, some mediums don't even know they are cold reading. There are some that are sincere but are reading cues without knowing.

'Barnum' reading or the 'Barnam Effect' is supposed to be incredibly vague (but obviously disguised not to be so as to seem personal). His statements were *way* too specific. An older man beginning with 'B' that has a pain in the back of his chest? The one about feeling confident most of the time but being insecure some other times was better, but then he ruined it by mentioning something about feeling like an overhead camera looking down at yourself? What? Who gets that?
The statements would have been fine for a studio audience, where there was a lot of people and at least one of them would identify with them (although asked as questions and fed slowly, one at a time). But this was meant to apply to pretty much anyone watching at home, and without anyone else to validate his statements, most people would think he was a terrible psychic!
I would argue they were just right, barnam statements are not always the way to go, you have to become more specific otherwise people will catch on to the vagueness. You mention something statistically likely to resonate with some people and not everyone, to get your target. Holly is the perfect target because she seemed to try to make his misses hit as well, an older man might be more likely to have a name beginning with B and indeed Holly knew one, older men always have aches and pains, I've got plenty and i'm only 24 (granted I'm unhealthy as fuck) but when you're retired you tend to let yourself go too, and back of the chest could mean a lot of different pains. The "overhead camera looking down at yourself" is probably to get people to acknowledge that as they get older they contemplate their own life and what they're doing like watching themselves. The scar on the leg is a brilliant one, because most kids especially in Holly's day were outside playing and falling off bikes and things and commonly injuring their legs.
Psychics would hate me because i'm odd, stay indoors all the time and do not have the same experiences as most people haha. I remember once as an older kid (maybe 10 IDK), I got my palm read by a gypsy and she told me she could see me kicking, perhaps a footballer... I'm a little boy in the UK, of course I would be football mad, little did she know haha i hate sports, and football bores me to tears.
This was a better way to show what psychics are doing, because you'll probably find a lot of the people watching at home got at least 2 or 3 hits which felt more specific, to them it will become more clear that these generic statements are just fluff.

It’s funny how when the spirits are trying to give their name, the psychic can only get vague bits of info “I’m getting a ‘J’ or a ‘G’ name...” but as soon as they’ve got specifics out the way, the spirits can then ramble off lots of specific (and generic) detail in fluency, eg “she’s saying you’re loved, she is with you at night and you’ll hear her when you’re in your bed. She’s saying she’s happy now and in a better place and no longer in any pain...”.
Why can the spirits say all this info but can’t get their own name out? 🙄

don't you know how it works? spirits are not always around - they are not omnipresent. it's not an on-demand sort of thing. one psychic i attended, couldn't pick anything specific up for the first 15 minutes or so. from an audience of 2000. he was quite open and honest about this. we waited. it's hard to tune into specific frequencies. it's like tuning a radio with weak stations. spirits do not have much energy - it's not like poltergeist. but, then he started getting specific messages. impressive. but, if they were to focus on readings, they would have no time for an interview. i thought leigh explained this very well.
