A Closer Look: Bougainville Referendum

  • The future political status is being decided, in part by more than 206,000 eligible voters in the Bougainville Referendum.
    On Saturday, November 23rd, Autonomous Bougainville Government President, Chief John Momis, was the first to vote in this referendum, among an atmosphere of celebration, in Buka, the administrative capital of Bougainville.
    The start of the referendum goes a long way in fulfilling the third pillar of the Bougainville Peace Agreement of 2001 - an agreement that signaled the end of the decade-long Bougainville conflict.
