Over the last couple months I started watching these reviews in order and seeing the progression of this and "The Patrick FLOP!!!" never ceased to make me laugh.
I'm so happy that Brian Zane revisited WCW Halloween Havoc 1998. It features one of Goldberg's and DDP's best matches of their careers. It also features one of WCW's worst matches of all-time, brother!
Listening to William Regal’s short lived podcast gave me a greater appreciation for Finley. The man literally was risking his life having a northern Irish gimmick in England in the late 70’s
Technically, Horace Hogan did initially debut as a member of Raven's Flock before Saturn broke the faction up, but he barely did anything of note during that short stint. However, it really shows how much WCW cared about Raven's Flock when, instead of maybe following through on that tease of Raven vs. Savage that was once done earlier that same year, the one thing the nWo took from Raven's Flock was... Horace Hogan.
I hate that you have to keep remaking reviews because of TH-cam striking your original videos, but I do love that we get to hear your updated opinions on the matches and angles and PPV overall
I will never forget the shock in my cousins living room when this show dropped out after the brutal hogan-warrior match. Glad to revisit the memories (kinda?) Thanks for another great ep
Really great review and appreciate the re-upload. I enjoyed the first review, and this one was even better. Hope to see re-uploads of Summerslam '98 and St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
I was fortunate enough to attend the final four Halloween Havoc's and will never forget when my friends and I first walked into the arena and saw that entrance ramp. We were completely floored and impressed beyond words. It appeared much larger in person and seemed alive the entire night.
I'm glad you threw in more context for the Wrath match. I was a bit of a mark for Wrath at that time, because his undefeated streak was actually pretty interesting. And the build for Sting/Hart back then got me so worked up, too. I still think the story and emotion is good, shame the match wasn't lol
Bret and Sting were my favorite wrestlers in their feds. Their match was a dream for me, but it quickly became a nightmare. If only this match happened in WWF.
WWE would have found some way to bury Sting and screw Bret over at the same time. Thank flip it happened in WCW where both were treated with the respect they deserve, even if they did put on a pretty lackluster showing on this occasion. They just didn't seem to click on this night for whatever reason.
Well said...the idea that WCW treated them with "the respect they deserved" is laughable. Bret was never anything but on the periphery of the main event scene until Vince Russo came over, The bottom line is that Pat Patterson was Bret's secret weapon, and he was never ever leaving the WWF.
So happy to see this one up, after your video on Goldberg and 97 Starrcade, I've wanted to see this one too in the trilogy of crowning disappointing WCW shows
Hearing Jericho shout "Help Me" is great. Even as a middle school kid, I always knew that the bad guys needed to get punished in the end. That's why I HATED the NWO. As you pointed our years ago in one video "the NWO got what they deserved......never!" - At least Jericho got punished and came across as a whiney weasel. He has always been one of my favorite wrestlers because you wanted to see him try to get ahead and always fail when he tried to cheat. He was the wrestling personification of "Seinfield/It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
That was Warrior wherever he went. The entrance and mystique were second to none, and Jim Hellwig clearly understood that assignment. But he wasn’t built for drawn out matches, and that was always his undoing.
As someone who was a huge wrestling fan during the first Hogan - Warrior match, stopped watching around 1993 but then came back when the NWO started, even I had completely forgotten about the Hogan - Warrior rematch until I watched your first review of this PPV, nor did I care to watch it when it happened. The Warrior went from this slightly crazy, high energy likeable character to just plain crazy with a dash of insufferability.
1000% in agreement that THE moment to end the streak should have been that Diamond Cutter. Both guys were over, but listen to that pop when it happens. The underdog managing to gut it out and upset the undefeated champ is a story that writes itself as opposed to all the goofy shit that happened with Nash.
This would have been better than Nash. However the real truth is neither was the right time nor the right person. Goldberg’s streak still had life, as it did with Nash and further neither Nash nor DDP needed it. Breaking that streak needed to be someone that was right there to use it to make them a star. DDP and Mash were well established stars.
Paul White should have ended the streak. It wouldn't have hurt goldberg any. But WCW squandered the giant. Instead of building a hulking monster like Andre, they wasted him on Hogan too early in his career, then turned him in to a bumbling goof with no real direction. Though i will say, Vince didn't use him much better.
@@matthewrosenthal753I have to disagree with this, DDP was not an established main eventer at this time and he was white hot with the wcw crowd. This would have been the perfect way to pull the trigger, especially considering the way they finally did with DDP by turning him heel 6 months too late.
@@williamcronshaw5262 You must of been asleep then because the only face as over in WCW at that time more than DDP was Goldberg. The heel turn was absolutely terrible. It was nearly killed DDP as a character. Only Goldberg own heel turn was worse. The only thing DDP did that was worse was his WWE debut which was straight trash. A STREAK of that magnitude should be broken at the right time and by some that is up an coming. Not an established star that’s been on our tv screens since the mid 80’s.
@@matthewrosenthal753 I would say they were about even at this point, although I personally had already gotten a little bored with Goldberg. Yes he was already a bit older at this point but compared to the rest of WCW's main event roster he was younger. Losing clean in a competitive match against DDP would not have hurt Goldberg one bit.

Thank you, Brian, for your commitment and reviewing this show again five years later, only this time with further insight into everything that led up to it. As for the show itself, the 'D+' rating still stands, even though DDP/Goldberg received a 1/2 star raise (from '3.5 out of 4' to '4 out of 5') and Hogan/Warrior fell unceremoniously from 'Zero Stars' to the infamous '-5 Star' rating. Of course, that match is so bad that it belongs with dreck like Jenna Morasca/Sharmell, the 'Miss WrestleMania' 25-Diva Battle Royal and Tyson Tomko/Stevie Richards.
Don’t think of it as a disguise. Think of it as a costume (because it’s Halloween Havoc).
