It was the first time I had EVER attended the Toastmasters International Convention, and to see the WCPS Live, and on top of that, history, was epic! As she was speaking I was picturing her speech in text and said to myself, "I don't know..." It was her delivery that put her on top!
It worked for Ramona..and she knew her audience. why not talk about Toastmasters in front of a Toastmasters audience? It worked and she won! Great Job Ramona!
Yup, and she is the exception. She did it right. I just disagree. Most people do it incorrectly....as a manipulation. She owned the stage. That's why she won.
Awesome work here Darren on analysing Ramona's winning speech, I love her energy and the strong connection with her message, she was one with it and had no problems bringing in the audience into it without standing between them and the message. She had become the message, She has the soul of a champion
Can you please do critiques of 2 speeches of Aaron Beverly the year he came second with the super long title and his latest one where he won. Thank you.
Title is important. What he did was amazing with his long title. It tied directly into his message. Brilliant. It has now been done. Would focus on a title of curiosity.
Congratulations to Ramona. Our club ran her winning speech during our meeting the following week! We even had her on our agenda! I was the evaluator and we did a round-robin style to get feedback from various club members in a collaborative effort. Members loved her command of the stage, humor, the gestures, intentional movement. Many members loved her vulnerability and transparency. I enjoyed the boxing analogy! I agree with you on not using Toastmaster speech as an example during the speech. In this case it worked but overall I'm not a big fan. The only thing I could think of that was distracting was she went "out of order" on the repeating back of School, Marriage and Speech. Did you catch that? I was expecting her to revisit each topic in the same order. Fabulous to see History made! Our club is having a "Viewing party" to keep the discussion going and see the rest of the contestants.
Yes, I did catch that. It was intentional so she could end on the Marriage.... still in training. (2 positives) then a negative to change direction. It is an advance technique well done. That is why positioning on stage and clarity of that was so important. Hope that helps!
HEY DARREN I WOULD LOVE YOU TO CRITIC THE SPEECH OF SHERRIE SHU, IN MY OPINION SHU DELIVERED A WINNING SPEECH. ROMONAS SPEECH REMINDED ME OF A TOASTMASTER SPEECH I HEARED BEFORE, KNOCK DOWN BUT NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM HER I THINK SHE DID AWESOME
I was there in Chicago. I agree she was great. Am I the only one thinking that she lacked eye contact. Although you say she was "audience focused", I felt she could work on eye contact.
I've been immersing in your podcast with Mark Brown for the past few weeks and you said many times that you don't like the word 'gesture' because it implies rehearsed actions and not come from your naturally expressed emotions. Don't you think Ramona's gestures are extremely rehearsed? Maybe a little too well-rehearsed which makes the speech look theatrical? Would like to hear your thoughts. Also, just subscribed!

Correct... her delivery and her intention! (Audience focused)

Welcome
Thanks Mr. Lacroix
You are welcome!
This was a great critique .... I’m up NEXT
Thanks. Prove it with your actions. Get a coach or at least world class coaching advice. No one becomes great alone.
The woman who came in second got coaching and joined my StageTimeUnviersity.com 10 months ago. She also practiced her speech over 200 times.

When I say audience-focused I'm referring to message and content
