Ok so if people don't want to spend 500 bucks on a relatively simple effect, let me lay out the foundation for you to test out in Resolve. This node setup can be pretty much anywhere in your flow, test and feel what suits you. - Insert a serial node - Insert a layer node on top of that - Set layer blend mode to Screen - Put gaussian blur into the layer node - The image now looks horrible, but don't worry - Dial down the layer node visibility to .3 - Insert serial node after layer mixer, name it e.g. Contrast - On the Contrast node, set pivot to 1 and contrast to whatever you prefer - Play with the layered gaussian blur AND the layer node visibility for different strengths of diffusion filter effect (remember to adjust contrast node accordingly) EXTRA: - You can play with the curves on the gaussian blur layer node. Drop the curve down in the shadow region to restrict diffusion to highlights more. - You can stack this effect for more granular control. - For halation just use the Halation OFX - When you have achieved a nice effect, create a compound node of the three nodes we built here. This way you can control the strength of the entire effect with one node visibility adjustment.
$500 is cheaper than what I've spent to date on all my current mist filters. A plugin won't get damaged, lost, or even stolen (!) from a set. A plugin is not limited to filter thread or matte box size. There are still cases I will use a filter, but I'm certainly interested in adding this plugin and not buying another filter again.
One big use for this, besides the obvious ones, is using it in virtual production, especially green screen virtual production. Being able to add a filter to your image in post is honestly a game changer.
@@NorthwestCameraCo I am actually building out a green screen virtual production room right now using Unreal and Ultimatte 12 4K set-ups and everything has to be so clean for the key. Adding this in post really gives you so much more creative options, especially because you can control the talent and background separately.
It would be nice if they continued to add filters with updates. For example, Tiffen just released Black Smoke Filters, which look so badass. I love my glimmerglass but I cannot justify ruining shots due to the highly prevalent double-image ghosting
This a really a really great Post tool and Great if you dont want to commit to a look or refine your look at a later point. Like you said not for everyone or everything but great new tool for many others
Looks promising, but I would like to see a real world comparison between physical filters and Scatter. They don't offer trials or demos so you have to pay $100 just to test 🤯 $499 for a software that I'm sure is not 100% comparable with the physical filter's image reproduction is weird. In my opinion a single function plugin shouldn't cost more than $200 (lifetime license). P..S. DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 = $295, Scatter Plug-in = $499 😂🥲
Pretty nifty, it seems like each "filter" from Scatter is a little weaker then the actual filter, a 1/4 looks more like a 1/8th. Obviously, you can adjust it to wherever you like which is cool.
Hi, developer/creator of Scatter (and Filmbox, etc.) here. The profiles are accurate - it's possible they didn't use the "Focal Length" slider in Scatter to correctly dial in the effect. The "Focal Length" parameter in Scatter is calibrated against a S35-sized sensor, so for cropped sensors you'd have to take that into account too.
Looks cool. Do you know if it's possible to use the plugin to create preview LUTs for working on set? I always find clients have little imagination when it comes to post and need to see close to the final look on set. Hence if you can create a preview LUT then that would be amazing.
Creating a LUT is possible when the effect does not use neighboring pixels to compute the resulting. Scatter is using spatial filtering, so you could not use LUT to « emulate » Scatter
Hey i like that Light Tubes, how did you attach these? And Yes im in the beginning of "cinematic" Filming, atleast im trying, and my basket was full of Black Mists, Glimmers, ND, Smog Filters etc. im going with the Scatter VST instead ;)
@@Milan-cf1xe Hey i still got a big basket full of things i have to get before i will buy the Scatter plugin but as far as i know, its very worth the price! and i will just go with this plugin instead of buying filters. As a more "hobby filmmaker" to be able to apply filters in post is the best thing you can get. And it is very accurate. ofc not 100% but it doesnt realy care. If you know what you want and what all the filters do, you could just go with the filter you want to save money, but im not sure about which i will need to get the most out of my shots, so scatter will be the best for me.
@@VELVET462 I have a Pro Mist 1/8 but it has sometimes ghosting when filming into light sources and some color shift. It is too small for my new wide angle lens anyways so i thought about just buying the plug in, because it eliminates the issues and gives me more flexibility
@@Milan-cf1xe yea thats a realy good scenario, exactly these things i dont even wanna deal with. Just one time spend money, and good to go, as said, people tested the accuracy of scatter and it is about 95%, if this would be not true it would be still about 90%, in side by side scatter vs real filter comparisons i couldnt even see a difference to real filters, maybe very slightly but not realy noticable. I think scatter and vsts in general like that can be a next big thing. It seems like a game changer for me. I say go with it, i will buy it for sure. Scatter needs to do a real time device for monitoring onset so clients and make up artist don't shoot the DP :)
