  • Hello friends,
I know! Random video posted on a Wednesday, but I wanted to jump in here real fast and recommend The Women by Kristin Hannah.
This is a newly released book and a book I put on my "12 books to read in 2024" book list and I could not be happier with this choice.
It is gorgeous, heavy, beautiful, and if I could rate it higher than 5 stars (I mean I could, it is my rating system...but we all need rules sometimes), I would.
really love it and highly highly recommend it. Especially for anyone who is interested in historical novels, war, the Vietnam War, nurses in war, and what happens to people coming back from war.

The nightingale and the great alone were wayyy better in my opinion.

I really did love the Nightingale too. It was probably the first historical fiction that got me into that genre 🥰🤩

Still reading it, but I almost feel like I need a support group to get through this book. I wish I had read it with a book club. The emotion of the book is captivity, chilling, and lingers. But incredibly inspiring to think people can find such strength to get through difficult things. Plus, I am grateful to have learned the women’s perspectives of ‘Nam. I knew about the difficulties of returning to civilian life, and especially the terrible treatment of Vietnam veterans upon return - but not how people didn’t believe women served.

@kearstingauthier2013 I know exactly what you mean! While reading it, I just wanted to talk to someone about it. Get their thoughts or trade ideas because it is definitely a heavy book with a lot to unpack.
I know some people don't like Kristin Hannah's writing style, but no matter what, the story being written here about these women, wow.
      There is just so much..
If you need to share any thoughts while reading, feel free to message me on Instagram. I'm happy to be an extra ear 😊

This sounds SO good! I just put it on hold at my library - historical fiction is my jam, and I've heard amazing things about Kristin Hannah. Six out of five stars, though? Now you're just making me impatient! 😜 What other books would you compare it to?

Hahaha I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did then ha.
I worry I might have hyped it up too much, but it really was an amazing novel filled with very tough subjects.
And if you love historical fiction, I highly recommend Nightinggale by Kristin Hannah. But I also loved the Dressmakers Gift or the Beekeepers Promise by Fiona Valpy (both ww2) or The Book Theif by Makrus Zusak (also ww2).

Oh wow! This book is so problematic on so many levels!! Am I the only one that sees how entitled and horrible Frankie is to everybody! Barb should have been the main character instead! Also, vets are commenting that the war portion of the book is straight insulting to what really happened so there’s that…

      Hi @prescillastoyanova !
I know not everyone was going to love this book. Honestly, I think that would be impossible! Haha. So I respect your opinion, and I can see why you felt that Frankie was so terrible to others. There were times that I wanted to tell her to love her friends more and go to them for help.
However, I think a part of her was horrible because she had a hard time handling the trauma she experienced, and she didn't know how to talk about it and holding it in was almost poisoning her core.
I was happy with the ending and the love and care she started showing others because that showed she was learning.
In regards to the response from vets, I did a quick search and did not find any responses to this book through a vets perspective.
But like I said, I know not every book will be for everyone, and I definitely would be interested to read some articles on how some vets have responded to this novel.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts though! Always interested to hear what others think of the books I've read ans especially if they have a different opinion ❤️

@@melissas_cozy_corner First of all, as he was literally handed a cottage on the beach, keys to a Mustang, and have enough “savings” to only have to work when she feels like it, she was a bad representation of a war veteran to begin with as many will return with the PTSD and all and have to start over and take care of their families. She was very entitled and just expected every single person to bend over backwards for her and if they didn’t she’d very upset (like in VA hospital, for example). And then her friends - how many times her black friend Barb just got a plane ticket to come see her, how many times she called her with the expensive calls even though she is not made of money like Frankie’s family. Frankie NEVER was there to support her friends (apart from one protest that she went to mostly because she was bored I think). She didn’t go to see Ethel’s baby, she never asked them how they really feel until the very end. She didn’t even call for Barbs birthday. The fact she didn’t become close with the new girl she was sharing room in the army also speaks volumes - they were nurses in 71 and went through hell together supposedly, yet they never become such a good friends because the girl was looking for a caring figure and Frankie is just not it. I can go on and on… how she disregards her family and their values, how she is disrespectful to her father and his pain, how her love interests are random army guys she just finds hot but she doesn’t even know that much about them other than the fact they are hot… I am a very try big fan of Four Winds and this flop of a book really got me going!!!

      Hello prescillastoyanova!
I totally understand your feelings when it comes to Frankie.
I actually have a lot of the same thoughts! But for me, that just made her a very fascinating and compelling character to follow.
She is not a perfect person and she has her flaws.
But for me, it was interesting to see someone in her "world" come back from war. Money was not going to fix the problems she had. And the fact that she just kept pushing her feelings down and acted terrible to the people around her showed that she needed help and she needed to figure out her anger issues and fear or she was not going to just destroy the relationships around her, but her own life too.
That being with terrible men as well. Don't even get me started on Rye...haha
However, I love hearing your opinion as well! This is one of the reasons I make videos like this. So we can create a discussion and talk about why a book you love, I may not. Or a book I love, you dislike.
These conversations brings in different perspectives and insights we may not be able to see on our own!

Women in war something I sadly never thought about, it’s insane how they keep writing us out of history and up until now we’ve let them.
