One of the best performance of our well-known old-school-classic doom metal band, lovely "Katatonia"!!!Greetings from Russia to all fans whole over the world!!!;-)))
23 years today | Katatonia - Sounds of Decay (1997) • The front cover of this 'three-song' EP is a screenshot of a decrepit god, taken from the movie Begotten. • There is an unreleased version of this EP on which Fred Norrman recorded. The band had to record the EP twice, as during the first recording, the result was terrible due to the band being very hungover. And for unknown reasons, they had not called Fred back to do the recording again. • According to Mikael Åkerfeldt, he prefers the unreleased version, as it is "a lot more brutal." • This release is the last Katatonia material to feature any death metal-elements, it’s also Åkerfeldt’s final collaboration with the group. • A fourth song named "Untrue" was also recorded in the studio session, but it did not end up on the original release. It was later released on the Brave Yester Days compilation album in 2004; it is the only material released from the first session. • The EP was also featured on the 2006 Peaceville reissue of the Brave Murder Day album.
i know i'm late but it technically isnt Mike's last collaboration, he did backing vocals on a couple Discouraged Ones songs and he helped with production up to Tonight's Decision
I think Mikael Akerfeldt also did some backing vocals and harmonies on Discouraged Ones, and I think Last Fair Deal Gone Down as well. They were good friends and toured together for many years and it doesn't surprise me that they spent a lot of time in the studio together as well
In nineteens of last century was a gold time of doom metal bands, such as:Paradise Lost "Gothic"(1991),Tiamat "Clouds"(1992)/"Wild honey"1994, Crematory "Just Dreaming..."(1994), Amorphis "Tales from the thousand lakes"(1994),Septic flesh "Mystic places of down"(1994)/"Future belongs to the brave"(1997),Lake of Tears"Headstones"(1995),Cemetary of scream"Melancholy"(1995),Anathema "Pentecost III"(1993),Theater of tragedy"Theater of tragedy" (1995),My dying Bride - "Turn loose the swans"(1993),Type O'Negative"Bloody kisses"(1991)/"October rust"(1996), Edge of Sanity "Crimson"(1996)/CrimsonII"(1997) Therion "Theli"(1996),In the woods" Heart of the Ages" (1995),Katatonia - "Brave Murder Day"- (1996)/KATATONIA - "Sounds of decay".All are they were a masterpieces albums of that time till our days and forever...
Bunch of timeless masterpieces! But if I were forced at gunpoint to pick one then that would be MDB's Turn Loose The Swans - emblematic of uniqueness! Although not of last century but I'd add Draconian's Arcane Rain Fell to the list as well. Which one would you pick in the same circumstance?
Friend, your list is really very good, but you have left out some very good albums like this one. th-cam.com/video/QEnr6yF-5Po/w-d-xo.html It was one of the best of that year 1997. Regards.
Eran buenos tiempos...
thank you for including Untrue, its pretty much objectively the most underrated katatonia song, besides their weird black metal demos from 1991-92 if you count those
Enrico Pallazzo I know it's Mikael that's why I listen to opeth and katataonia and bloodbath great bands if you didn't know mikael did a few bloodbath albums. Fuckin heavy as fuck
Yeah, Mike Akerfeldt did the grunts on Brave Murder Day and this EP. Renkse had lost his voice something fierce in these recordings so he played the drums.
Has anyone ever listened to other albums stylistically closer to this or Brave Murder Day? If yes, I'd be glad to get your suggestions of albums in the same vein from any bands outside of Opeth, October Tide, Draconian, Slumber, My Dying Bride, and Agalloch. Thank you so much!
Early Anathema, Swallow the Sun, Ahab (slower and doomier), Forest of Shadows, Novembers Doom, early Green Carnation. I'm sure you've heard some of these, but I hope you find some new stuff to listen to
Great work 😀 At least it doesn't have that terrible waffle sound a lot of recordings on Utube do. Don't be hard on yourself. It's great. And not having to turn the amp up too loud is a bonus. 😎💚👍
Asiq estoy preparado. VAMOOOS KATATONIAAAA

you have no idea how bad i wanna hear the "worse" take

Allegedly, "Quiet World" from the Saw You Drown EP was recorded during the Sounds of Decay sessions. I can't really find any proof of this though.
I think Mikael Akerfeldt also did some backing vocals and harmonies on Discouraged Ones, and I think Last Fair Deal Gone Down as well. They were good friends and toured together for many years and it doesn't surprise me that they spent a lot of time in the studio together as well

crimson 2 came out in 2003 man

Rapture is great too
Great list, but is Edge Of Sanity a doom?
Man this EP is the definition of a hidden gem.
I'm here because of Mikael Åkerfeldt.. his growl is perfect!
Sara Salamone you should listen to his opeth and bloodbath stuff serious! And listen to his opeth live! He sounds amazing! If not better than album!
I'm here cause it's katatonia before they officially changed their sound
Just for that? Asshole!
Jonas is way better singer in both katatonia n vs opeth.
B4 they changed their sound??? Lmfao. .they have a new sound and direction on every album..its what makes them the top metal band ever.
This EP is example about epicness of true doom/death metal and harsh vocal.
I did not know about this ep, the sound is simply astonishing and begotten's artwork fits perfectly. Cheers from Colombia.
Eran buenos tiempos...
It's crazy how much they're sound has changed. It's hard to pick a favorite release but this is up there for sure.
Immortal stuff here.
Nisamowity klimat jest na tej plycie 👍👍👍🎸🎸🎶
Nowhere is a masterpiece , Mikael is a God
thank you for including Untrue, its pretty much objectively the most underrated katatonia song, besides their weird black metal demos from 1991-92 if you count those
I happen to enjoy this ep more than brave murder day
Kevin Overholt glad I'm not the only one
Different vocalist that's why.
@@conortaylor550 Same vocalist (Mikael Åkerfeldt) except for the track Day performed by Jonas Renkse
Enrico Pallazzo I know it's Mikael that's why I listen to opeth and katataonia and bloodbath great bands if you didn't know mikael did a few bloodbath albums. Fuckin heavy as fuck
Me too
This sounds like decaying
Great job with the remastering, sounds much more powerful and warmer, but still retaining the primitive sound of the original
Thanks for making a version of this EP I can listen to loud!
Potent and wild growls from Mr. Mike Akerfeldt from Opeth.
Are you saying vocalist of Opeth was in Catatonia?
Yes he did some session recordings on the Brave Murder Day LP and Sounds of Decay EP, as well as some touring
Yeah, Mike Akerfeldt did the grunts on Brave Murder Day and this EP. Renkse had lost his voice something fierce in these recordings so he played the drums.
David Aghamalyan Not only that, in their documentary they said that Mikael had thoughts on joining Katatonia permanently, but instead bet on Opeth.
So glad to see people knowing their stuff haha thought I'd have to give a lesson lol
Los reyes de la melodía
Great Job...!!! The sound is perfect!!!
I just remembered the hours i spent listening to this record back in the days...
Man, i love this Band...
A jewel ....
Has anyone ever listened to other albums stylistically closer to this or Brave Murder Day? If yes, I'd be glad to get your suggestions of albums in the same vein from any bands outside of Opeth, October Tide, Draconian, Slumber, My Dying Bride, and Agalloch.

Daylight dies
Check Autumnblaze (Bleak and Mute Boy Sad Girl) and personally related Paragon of Beauty (Comfort me Infinity).
Check "October tide - Rain without end"
Estatic Fear's debut, an incredibly unique record.
13:17 - 14:22 distress moment . That's why i loved this band at first.
7:56 is so good. As is 14:52.
sounds amazing good job!!!!!
Land of Nowhere.

Esto es un disco sagrado
Beautiful!!!!!!
i love this EP!
Fun fact the album cover is from a film called begotten
What movie still is that on the album cover? I swear I've seen it before online but forgot the name.
it's begotten
Well done. Very good doom metal

Simplesmente lindo
great
Some ancient demon has been cared about weather... Okay (:
Love it
On apple music this is added onto Brave Murder Day
Great work 😀 At least it doesn't have that terrible waffle sound a lot of recordings on Utube do. Don't be hard on yourself. It's great. And not having to turn the amp up too loud is a bonus. 😎💚👍
Who were they playing in this EP?
Nowhere is their best
There's something uniquely jarring about the way Untrue's harsh vocals and instruments kick in.

That's Music, that's Katatonia ✌️🇦🇹👍
. Nowhere
atmosphere decays in me i fail to convict my useless days
the lack of substance circle of downfall
exitless ways into pale wake tired attempts to crush the design
it's like nowhere i cannot sell the plight that is mine
everything is real but i'm not here i've lost my strength somewhere
nowhere used to care about weather used to plan the days that came
used to try and watch you used to know my name
someone said remember but i can't remember anything at all
anything at all
2. At Last
all my presence died today i breathe to memories
guess i'm closing down torn and tired of my heart's sound
what's worth to me when life's not around
i will sleep tonight to sleep tomorrow if i sleep at last
a promise has been broken the essence of
love in rust one in a million i'm the one turning pale
any colours to express apart from bleak is hard
and where you are my thoughts are in guilt so forget me forget me not
time to catch something since my ticket says the end
all my flowers withered today the room is quiet guess it's
growing cold dead calm without my heart's sound what's worth
to you when i'm not around i will sleep tonight
to sleep tomorrow
if i sleep at last
3. Inside The Fall
all noise that breaks my head i run along the water
you didn't really notice i've left and gone away
you're like waiting uncurable disease left me waiting
inside the fall all waves that traps my breath
i should be in your sight but you didn't really notice
that i've left and gone away
🤘🤘🤘
An way to download mp3s of your version?
Thank you friend.
This is their prime...Discouraged Ones was the last truly great Katatonia record in my opinion.
agree....
Darren Verni Exactly.
I would add " The great cold distance " too. Different, yet still powerful
i actually enjoy every record from Katatonia for it's own style, no excuses
Vocals: Mikail akerfeldt not Jonas. Check out opeth and bloodbath. It's just as sexy and amazing
This shit is brilliant.
Ugh 💜
👍
I love Opeth...but sorry, Mikael belongs in Katatonia!
Fucking awesome if you love Mike and Kat. Didn't know this existed.
This band was so awesome the first 3 albums..
Sounds just like Paradise lost gothic album
KATATONIA:Jlvh Elonhim Ep,Funeral to comes,Braves murder day and dancer December soul is all Master pieces BLACKHEIM leave with KATATONIA and of course this awesome Ep

haha! mikael is better .....
The best Katatonia record, along with Last fair deal gone down
This and For Funerals To Come combined would make for a better album than any LP Katatonia actually released.
it's so damn loud like porn :)
When you remaster old stuff, you fck it up!
very good!
