    Glen, there is only one problem with your videos. Having watched all of your maintenance projects with my wife, and having just spent 3 weeks sailing on our boat here in NZ... you are now the new standard and I'm not sure I can compete... "You know Glen would clean that thing out completely"... "What would Glen do with that leaky chainplate"... etc etc... 🤣🤣🤣. But seriously, love your work! Keep em coming and hope to see you here one day soon!

      Murray, that comment made us laugh. Yes, we should already be in NZ if it wasn’t for Covid. But we will get there, one day.

    I woke up in this perfectly rainy Sunday morning and first red the newspaper then watched the latest updates on my football team (Fiorentina) and left the best part sipping my second cup of coffee still in my gown, with the rest of the family shut away: watching an almost naked funny awesome man fixing his boat! What a morning! Thanks!

      Glad you enjoyed the Sunday morning viewing. Hope you remembered to unlock the family after watch it! Oops, yes, I think I should make a point of wearing a shirt when filming. Not a pretty sight! And ... it would be unfair to frighten away the very few female viewers we have!

    So, my lawn fertilizer spreader suffered a catastrophic failure. As I was about to break it up and put it in the trash, I thought…what would Glen do? Out with my knockometer to carefully disassemble, fabricated up a new torsion piece, clean and reassemble. Good as new! Thanks Glen, you’re an inspiration. I've very much enjoyed this series, well done.

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that. That really made us laugh! But you know what, my father would never throw anything away just because it stopped working. He would rip it apart and always try to fix it, vacuums, lawnmowers, our car ... often adapting the thing to make it work again. And as a boy I loved watching him and later helping. He was my inspiration and taught me there is nothing that cannot be fixed if you have the will. By the way, he also refused to allow a TV in the house. I hated him for that .... but now I could jhug him for it. Just wish parents today would throw away those damned phones and tablets. I really wonder what kind of generation they are creating :(

      I did serve my time as an engineer in the oil industry, but really my interest in fixing things was inspired by my Dad and Brother when I was a boy. It seemed we were always tearing something or another apart to fix it. And, no TV in our house. Which was good, but maybe thats why I've never been friends with electronics (no TV to fix!)

    I only recently came across your channel, I've no idea why I didn't find it earlier because I've been watching loads of sailing channels for at least a couple of years. Glen and Oanna are a most beautiful couple, a perfect couple. Cloudy Bay is the most beautiful sailing yacht, a perfect yacht. I absolutely love watching your videos, you both are among the least pretentious sailing people I've watched, definitely the most relaxing sailing channel out there. And the soundtrack as a musician of many years I can say with certainty that music is a study in perfect simplicity or simple perfection, a fantastic piece of music. I hope you go sailing again soon.....very inspiring!!!!

    18:25- New owner... man would it be amazing to be the new owner of Cloudy Bay one day. Considering this work is on a spot that will be hidden. And yet you take more care with it than many of the half assed jobs I've seen on other boats in glaringly obvious spots by prior owners (or the yard that built them for that matter).
    Great video as always. Thank you for taking the time to put it together! I've lost count of the tips , tricks, and techniques I've learned from watching you do your work at this point.

It's always interesting to see how meticulous you are about keeping the various systems on Cloudy Bay running the way they were designed to, and in some cases, even better than their original designers intended. I'd love to see the spreadsheet you must use to track all the maintenance items you want to address at each annual haul out. I can only imagine that it's pages long and extremely detailed!

    It's surprising to see how the aluminum eroded on the bottom of the housing. Oh, and FYI, it's still referred to as a BOX KEY. I'm not sure if you have a Woodruf key anywhere on the boat. Thanks for sharing.

    I think you should paint the whole assembly after you repair the corrosion if you can gain the clearance. Perhaps you should cut it down overall on a lathe to gain clearance for the paint surface to secure the fit. Or just paint the exposed surface to the water.

    BTW, a machineshop could easily make another O-ring groove above/below . And, a underwater epoxy would/can easily be used to fill & seal those minor pits.

    The locking bolts into the rudder post should have had a dog point going into the hole, that is a bolt end turned down to get to a smooth surface below the minor diameter of the bolt thread.
    Maybe that is what you had, but you did not show the lock bolt end.
    The life of the leaking housing was 14 years, really not too bad. The original owner had a trouble free life.
    I hope your fix works, certainly worth the try.
    There is always the possibility of all new parts for 14 more years of use? Depending on things, that might have been the best way to go as you might want a different boat by then.
    All the best, JIM 🤩

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks again for the useful comment Jim. The lock bolts had a slightly pointed end, such that they sit tight in the drill hole. But the original installation simply had them graunched into the thread can you believe!
      I would have purchased a new bearing housing, but the lead time was 10 weeks and I had to get the rudder back up and hole filled!

    I've really enjoyed your boat maintenance series. As many others have said, your quality of work, persistence, and thoroughness are impressive and educational.
    I have a special request - would you please make a video where you do a consolidated rundown on you favorite materials, tools, etc. You have used some specialty lubricants, adhesives, etc. that have seemed particularly good. Some of the materials are obvious and readily available. But your substantial experience and effort have uncovered some excellent, lesser known items.
    Perhaps this is too pushy - in which case please disregard.
    If not, thank you for the help.

      150k is my guess - as a yard would not 'rebuild' so many parts....they would fit new at cost to the owner and save the labor time.

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not really sure what a yard would cost. But here in USA people time is at least $100 per hour. I had a friend who had the same job “professionally” done on his rudder in South France and it took 2 guys 3 1/2 days. And they didn’t address corrosion - just stuck it back in with lots of silicon!

    • @IanB22
      @IanB22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1 At about 37:00 had you put new, dark coloured antifoul around the rudder hole?
    2 How did Ray not fall fown the rudder drop hole?

    I would have looked for a machine ship to weld up the corrosion holes and O ring groove and use a lathe to re machine the surface. The whole thing can then be re-anodized. Also, you could maybe use a second seal to the hull. The corrosion is partly due to and electrical pathway from the stainless stock to the housing or the steel of the lip seal I suspect. I had an aluminium lower bearing completely collapse and replace it with a bronze one and added a nipple to pump in new grease a couple of times a year.

    Using antisieze is a good idea, make sure you use one designed for aluminium. Lanacoat would probably work I think. Common copper based antisieze in a salt environment would seem to me to be asking for trouble. The corrosion looked nasty and the next time you are hauled out you might think about getting those pits drilled out and rewelded and then the whole thing machined black to spec. Did you passivate the corrosion?My aluminium lower bearing disintegrated (the boat was 20 years old) and I opted to replace it with bronze that I put a grease nipple into for the sake of the steel rollers.

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did want to replace the pitted aluminium housing, but the lead time from the manufacturer was 10 weeks, which didnt work for me. As for welding, I was concerned it could do more damage than good. ANd finding good skilled people in and around Maryland is not easy. The good ones are all too busy with their own set of clients. Very hard to get quality work done around these parts. So I opted to expoxy it, then ensure it would never touch seawater ever again.

Too late now (for this repair) but you may wish to be aware that there is a specific product which may have helped you in the form of ‘Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)’ which is suitable for exactly the material and sort of corrosion you were seeking to remedy.
