When I taught my daughter to drink from a straw, I used a regular straw and dipped it into juice and put my finger over the top, allowing some liquid to remain in the straw when I took it out of the cup, and put it in her mouth. I did this several times then handed her the baby cup, a did it a few times and she understood that liquid comes out of a straw and started sucking on the straw.
