      I'm not sure why the PS version needs to load so often. the animation is already really cut back. I guess the total stage just has way too much animation for the system to handle it. To be fair, Symphony of the Night doesn't have any where near the amount of hand drawn animation found in Metal Slug.

      Retro Core as I understand it, KOF 95 on Saturn, the one with the ROM cart rather than RAM cart, had BG graphics on the cart. It's probably a good indication of just how much space the BG graphics could take up on Neo Geo ports. I don't know if SNK did the best job optimizing things since they had hardware to sell at the time.

      Yep.... and they scrubbed it all up when they let their B team at Nagoya handle the disappointing Saturn port of Symphony of the night.

    One more time, Saturn ports of Neo Geo are the best choices thanks to the 1 or 4MB cartdrige. Cheap and with very short loading times. I remember enjoying a lot de KOF ports 20 years ago...

    Glad to see this one, as Metal Slug is one of my favorite franchises. What a brilliant take on the run-n- gun. I heard stories of the PS1 version, but never saw how bad it was until now. The lack of animation was obvious on my small phone screen, and not even full screen. The first Metal Slug is one of the best in the series, in my opinion. My other favorites are X and 5. Great stuff as always.

    My "Neo Geo" was a Sega Saturn with an Arcade stick for a long time. I didn't have a AES back in the day and I bought the Neo CD in 96 or 97 when was already cheaper. on the Saturn I played Metal Slug, Samurai 4, Waku Waku 7, Galaxy Force, I think the first Real Bout and more. I already had a Saturn and the AES was REALLY expensive. my cousins had a Neo CD, and we used to compare the games on NCD and Saturn, and it was basically the same, but Neo cd had extremely long loads. I never seen a NCDZ, but people say it was much better, but at that point I was playing Dreamcast already. :)

      The Saturn was an excellent substitute for the Neo Geo. Many of the Ports were so close it was hard to tell them apart.

    • @captaincommando2602
      @captaincommando2602 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I prefer the NEO GEO CD despite the long loading times. Because not all NEO GEO games are available on the Sega Saturn. Not to mention, a good example is one of my favourite shooters of all time: ASO II: Last Guardian (also known as Alpha Mission, its Western title).

    • @mspeter97
      @mspeter97 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heck, even the saturn version suffers somewhat, and it has extra ram cart too.
      Neo geo games usually didn't play nice on these systems. Look at KoF 99 on Neo Geo CD vs PS1. The PS1 version has shorter load times sure, but frames of animation are missing, sound is awful etc...
      Ram was a big problem for those games

    I bought Metal Slug X on Steam yesterday and I have admit, it's incredible. Metal Slug is so much fun as a video game franchise and at least one of the games is a must play.
    Neo Geo CD has been criticized for having long loading times. It's true Neo Geo CD could have used 2x CD drive, although the loading times depend on the ROM size of each game.
    Despite being on 32-bit systems, the Saturn and the Playstation ports have more slowdowns than the Neo Geo version. Neo Geo is actually a 16-bit system, just like how PC Engine is a 8-bit system. Maybe the slowdowns happen because the backgrounds are done using sprites, just like on Neo Geo, rather than with tiles.

    not sure what SNK were thinking with the NeoCD's 1x CD drive, even in 1994 that was getting a little slow.
    funny enough there are old interviews with SNK at the time where they claimed Metal Slug 2 would not arrive on the Saturn due to the system not being up to the task . of course it didn't stop them from releasing Metal Slug X on the PS1....
    Money talks louder than technical specs I guess.
    shame they didnt use the 4mb cartidge though , would have helped bring the loading times down even further.

    The Saturn just had that extra ram, even without the ram expansion it had more than the PS1 on top of that it could also do more layers of parallax scrolling, a beast of a machine when it came to 2D games.

    Those loading breaks really hold back the Playstation version, I'd certainly have been disappointed if I'd paid out to import it.
    All academic though, I had an N64 back then so I was completely out of the loop for most games, if you were ever thinking about buying a console the best strategy was to ask me what I was getting, then make sure you didn't get that console. I always somehow picked the one plagued by software droughts and sparse catalogue.

      Yeah, people in to Nintendo back then missed out on so much for what?, a Zelda game and Mario game every blue moon. Actually, seems like the Wii U was the same and I see the Switch being that way too. In an idea world you could have a Switch and one other system.

The story of the game is that Osama Bin Laden is planning to do a second terrorist attack and you are sent in to stop him, what’s worse? I hear the port is actually pretty good. @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Funkenflug all arcade emulation. No point covering something that's just running Arcade code. Plus they're also not ports, theyre emulations.

    There is a better "chinese" port of Metal Slug for the GBC called "Terrifying 911"

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and thought this rubbish was that one. Looks like there are two GBC Metal Slug games from China.

    • @datamanmachine
      @datamanmachine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe and i didnt known the one you show in the video. The "911" one is by a company called hitek if i remember correctly. And avery impressive port. Minus the whole 911 theme.

      Not at the moment but I could add a section on the BluRay I'm thinking about putting together.

    MVS is the way to go IMO. I paid £25 for mine.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You were very luck with that price unless you bought it many years ago.

    • @simon41978
      @simon41978 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I bought 5 carts from Coinopexpress about 13 years ago. In the same order I got The Last Blade for £16, KOF95 for about £20 and two others. The most expensive cart cost about £28. Shortly after this I bought a Candy cab. Of course, customs wanted about £50 for the package with the games but I was so happy with the cab and games it didn't bother me.
      I did a check on Ebay, you can still get Metal Slug (MVS) at a good price.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the greats cost a lot these days. That's why I'm never selling on my stuff any more. Actually, now is a good time in Japan to be buying up those expensive PS2 games as prices have really dropped recently.

    • @simon41978
      @simon41978 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neo MVS used to be one of the best collections to start. A lot of them could be had for £20 or under. They're also very well built carts, like bricks almost. There's a satisfaction about getting them.
      Not sure what the market's like these days...Coinopexpress prices are crazy but Ebay doesn't seem too bad.

      And the Neo Geo Pocket one XD Not included as they're not direct recreations of the arcade game.

    Does it seem like the color is a bit washed out on the Saturn, or is just the way the video was captured?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just the way the video is captured. The other versions are all running via emulation and HDMI for video out. The Saturn port is running on real Saturn Hardware via RGB video out.

    shame that so many saturn ports have their horizontal resolution squeezed as a result of the slightly higher resolution of the system.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When playing the Saturn version on it's own you don't really notice the different aspect ratio but you sure do in the side by side comparison.

      Retro Core i think its pretty noticable in a lot of arcade or ps1 ports. symphony of the night and parodius for example.

    • @RetroCore

      I guess if you've played d the original a lot but for me it's never been anything I really noticed. The SFC /SNES has a similar issue too.

    Am I the only one that feels the Saturn version is plagued with slow down? That’s the only version I’ve ever played.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Saturn version does slow down but then again so do the other versions. The developers behind Metal Slug were also behind In The Hunt. Another game with rely awful slowdown. Metal Slug 2 on the Neo Geo was so bad for slowdown that they had to re-release it as Metal Slug X.

    neogeo cd version lost some frames of animation in some parts and is not 100% the same as the arcade version, it`s slightly inferior, thou it`s almost unnoticeable

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, it's not 100% which is why I said it's 99% :) It is hard to notice the differences without really examining both versions but I guess most people couldn't tell the difference.

    • @JOAOVRM
      @JOAOVRM 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retro Core kinda sucks. since they managed to fit the whole metal slug 2 game into the ngcd (even thou there were some nightmarish load times), you'd expect that metal slug 1 to be 100% faithful to the arcade original. but i Guess they did it to make the load screens more bearable

    its look like saturn did have some issue with speed, dont know its from record time or game version (this 1.0005 right ?) or saturn itself, also agree not include IOS and Android version this 2 port game plain awful not because its actually arcade version become app version, more like the control is bad after all virtual button not good for fast pace action game like metal slug, but i do recommend metal slug defense in IOS and Android at least if you want tower defense type game with SNK character (not only metal slug series its also have some character from KOF)

    • @carlosbragatto
      @carlosbragatto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bhirawa Maylana only if you use the 4MB ram expansion, or a automatic 1-4MB ram expansion like EMS Action Replay. Use a 1MB *ONLY* expansion and you won't see any slowdown or graphic corruption. This also applies to all SNK games on the Saturn.

    • @bhirawamaylana466
      @bhirawamaylana466 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlos Bragatto ah i see to be honest i play the arcade and playstation version, so i never feel the speed issue though i did feel the notorious loading in playstation

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Saturn port of the game does suffer from slowdown but funnily enough, in different places to the Neo Geo original.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was using the official Saturn 1MBit RAM cartridge. Metal Slug on the Saturn does slow down but then again, so does the Neo Geo original.
