Awesome perfection in tone, transcription, and fluidity in playing. Than you Sir for sharing. This song turned .e on to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Delivering newspapers VERY early one summer 1977 Saturday am, I FOUND OMFTR in the middle of a busy downtown 2 lane business street. I knew Freebird & Sweet Home of course, getting ready to start my freshman HS year, but was burnt on their constant radio play. The double live album opened a whole new world and I saved my paper route $ to buy a used LP copy. Thanks for sharing this ! I need to unlearn errors & bad habits now. 😆

Just ran into your videos yesterday. I’m a musician and been playing live and studio work for 20+ years . I’ve played this one a thousand times, and felt I never had the “sound” right on, from rhythm to solo, and you are so right about rolling off that bit of distortion. Ed’s playing was incredibly clean, BUT in order to get through some of those leads I always added a touch more roll on gain. However after hearing your tutorial I realize just how over distorted I was. It want horrid but you are right, you really have to roll that volume back to get the right sound.
Im just now going through the rest of your videos , and I knew Swamp music was gonna be interesting BUT dang!! It was much more than I anticipated.
I appreciate what you are doing, Steve Gaines and Ed King have always been my favorite pickers. Steve grew up not to far from where I live. I talk to his old band mates still today, and those cats are pretty salty themselves!!
    Keep it coming!

I was at their last concert given by the original band on October 19th, 1977, in Greenville, S.C. at the memorial auditorium. I've also seen you in the Artimus Pyle band and by far the Artimus Pyle band is the closes thing I have ever heard to Ronnie and the original band. Seems like Ed had a lot of catchy licks and rhythm idiosynchrosies.
He could make music with that guitar, music that would make you listen, make you move, and would stick with you.
I know you call it "nit-picky," but it's those subtle distinctions that set you apart. Those details allow you to play Skynyrd songs authentically.
    That definitely sets you apart.
Thanks for sharing the "how" with those of us who also notice them, and want to play them correctly!

Ed's & Steve's solos alone are borderline rocket science: reckon it takes a degree to figure out that stuff correctly. If you ever decide to make a bold move with Steve's I Know A Little that'd be the best Chrismas present the subscribers could deserve. Stay safe and keep the fire burnin'

Allen was one of the best guitarists of that era. Very underrated possibility because people tended to think of the guys in Skynyrd as a three guitar assault instead of the individual players that they were. That early lineup of Collins, Rossington, and King doesn’t get better than that!

A few redneck kids from the same area turned out to be near prodigy level musicians and play and write the most incredibly complex and simple tunes. I've been playing since 85 and it still blows my mind how 5 or 6 guys manage to intersect that are all super talented players. The Eagles is another great example .

I tend to shake the entire guitar fairly hard ( One guy is doing that on the recording )while letting the chords ring in the chorus . A,B,B,C,D climb to the chorus ,might be A,Bb,B,C,D chromatic climb to the D Both ways work, but it hard too tell after playing it both ways. Great job on the song . The solos are spot on. I learned some things. The F,F#,G climb before the second solo I was not doing , now we will. My band plays this along with Don't ask me .. and Swamp music

LSkynyrd to me was the best band for guitar work with the lead & rhythm guitar's period! It was nothing but unbelievable talent live sounding like the recording's. Ed, Gary & Allen were the best in 73' & 74'. No one else will match their talent on true Rock N Roll guitar work! Hard to believe their all gone. Rest in peace. Always a fan of the original members. Lucky enough. to see them 7 times in my young day's.

you need to whip out the needle and the spoon and some brown powder to put in it and show us the proper way to do it!

Scott , In all the interviews I've seen of Gary ,I never heard him once mention Molly Hatchett . Was there some type of war between them ? I do like more than a few of their tunes. It is obvious that besides Allmans ,LS influenced them .

No idea. I never heard them mentioned either. I like a lot of their early stuff.

I've got a request for Roll Gypsy Roll. Never seen anyone get it close, but with your ear, I figure you're the man to do it.
