Dude...Sam...you are crushing it with the videos! Excellent shots of this section! Not too many PCT vloggers have covered that section as well. The clips of Moriah crossing the snow sections were really well done. It really gave a sense of being on the mountain top with you guys. Loved it! Be safe and enjoy the next section through Big Bear!
Good job! That is the first high stretch of trail on the PCT and a lovely remote ridgetop hike.. Appears to be much less snow on Mt San Jacinto this spring than in 2020. It was such a contrast that year. We were post holing through hip deep snow in peril. But could look off far below into the distance toward Interstate 10 and the Palm Springs area where they were experiencing heat warnings. My advice, though you didn’t ask ….. ditch the crocks and any extra clothing or things you might need (but never will). A thru hike of 2,653 miles on the PCT when done without shortcuts is an athletic feat. Every ounce will eventually take it’s toll on your body. Do not listen to the wannabe fear mongering about the Mohave crossing, or the Sierras. It is always a bunch of baloney (2011, 2012, and 2020). Keep on truckin’. Tommy Sohappy
There you guys are, Idyllwild resupply, food/wine/friends and did I say FOOD... Bkfst at the PVC and onward... windy and clear, PUDS (pointless ups and downs)... awesome vistas...Manzanitas, burn areas, rocks, rocks and rocks... sleepy time at 3599 feet... High Ho, High Ho, it's Higher you two go...Climbing into the clouds and snow... and now downward out of the snows, well almost out of the snows, it appears to be everywhere as the PUDS continue... 8k ft camp sight, gonna get a little cold and windy... Those Burn sites suck... Crazy awesome view at your camp site, also CRAZY WINDY / SCARY... Big trees and the Big snow fields finally start to dwindle as you continue your trek north, started out to be a great camp sight and the sun went down, oh well... More of that crazy crunchy cold white stuff... and then suddenly your out of it... with another good camp site but no wind, sleep at last... 200 miles on the trail and wait what is that desert and a train... and then a hitch into town for a resupply and maybe a ZERO? SAFE HIKING
Spikes on, spikes off, repeat. Beautiful views. I really thought you would lose that tent in the wind. Epic section. Thank you again for sharing your vlog.
It is nice to see how the Helinox chair lends itself so well to hold light stuff whilst one sits on a rock. Love the vids, great job! Keep the comming.
Good share for concerned thru hikers. People are on these trails all year round. It’s just the first storms of winter when the trail hasn’t been broken yet.
Mount San jacinto is good practice for the entire sierra range. Tho the sierras are usually not as windy cuz of the nature of the topography plus way more trees in the campsites. But it’s only a few days on San jacinto. It’s weeks in the sierras. Hopefully since it wasn’t a high snow year you won’t have raging rivers to cross in the sierras. I’m looking forward to all your adventures on the PCT
Great job hiking and documenting with video through this section. The hike through the San Jacinto's is seriously tough even in the best of weather conditions that you experienced at this moment. 10:22 we can see some of the trails are really steep canyon walls. Keep on.
Beautiful views out there, and great job capturing it on video! Congrats on making it to Mile 200! I will be attempting a PCT thru hike in a couple years and so I am learning a lot about terrain, weather and resupply there from watching your videos (even tho I know it’s different every year). Hike on!
At least the wind calmed down in the morning. It blew my tent down and I froze trying to keep it up half the night. Eventually I gave up and slept in a collapsed tent :o) @ 23:45 I tripped and hurt my knee in that same section. Had a big bump for two weeks after that but it did not hurt too much but I felt it for a month.
Helpful video - relieved some miner anxiety. I'm planning an early March start date in 2023 and I've been on the fence about using crampons or micro-spikes. I'll just have to wait and see how the weather plays out - especially in the Sierras. Thanks
Definitely micro spikes! I don’t foresee any terrain on the PCT that would ever require crampons. Not sure if you are experienced in steep snow travel and already know this…but walking in crampons destroys your feet, a precious asset when thru hiking. We only use crampons in terrain where we are roped up as a rule of thumb. You can walk all day in micro spikes and barely notice a difference in your feet
@@pungo147 we didn’t carry one and never felt like we needed it. I will be cautious in recommending this though. I would say 95% of people in our area were carrying them (a lot of them never came off peoples packs) but its not a bad tool to have if you know how to use it.
I'm amazed that you're so close to the greater L.A. metro. Also, not the it matters, but I hear most say either "san HA-cinto" or "san YAH-cinto", but since it's an Anglicization of Spanish, I guess there's no "right" way.
great videos! i am going to start my pct journey in 33 days :) Do you edit your videos with relive? I really like the 3d presentation but I cannot figure out how to combine multiple days with relive... do you use the tracks from your inreach? looking forward to your next video!
We edit the videos with iMovie. Very minimal editing , just kind of throw all the videos in order and call it good! Relive is done through my garmin fenix watch . Also not sure how to combine multiple days but it can be done I’m pretty sure. Imagine a relive for the whole pct!?
