Incredible bass line, originally written and played by the co-songwriter Alan Rankine. What an astonishing pairing of musical talents The Associates were.
There is a video of Rankine strumming the chords of this song that leads me to believe this cannot be true. His guitar playing is quite rudimentary and he is not known to be a bass player.
This puts the Associates in a completely different light for me. Back in the 80's I thought they were a bit of a joke and as soon as I heard the vocals start, that's when I cringed and switched it off. Excellent workout - well done ! I've just acquired a Peavey Grind thru neck 4 string bass and am doing my best to get my Jack Bruce repertoire sorted even though I find myself playing "For The Love Of Money" by the O'Jays and other funky stuff more these days.
The Bassline that made me fall in love with the Associates .. back in the 80s I was working with a Scottish electrician from Perth who introduced me to their music. Was a sad day to hear when Billy passed. 🎵💜
Excellent job.... Always loved this song expecially for the crazy bass line, which just seemed impossible.. One of the best bass lines I've ever heard for a song..... totally makes the song for me.... Well done.
At last someone doing an Associates bass line, you nailed it! Michael Dempsey a very under appreciated bass player, one of my top 10, he just has a very different style. Started with The Cure and then moved to The Associates. One of my favourite bass lines along with 18 Carat Love Affair and Party Fears Two
I saved this video to my PC, played it back at a fraction of the speed and now, now I can just about play one of the bass lines I never, ever thought I'd figure out. If you lived nearby, I'd buy you a pint in appreciation! Cheers for nailing that one, stunning work!
Human beings are awesome. Pure bass guitar magic. Plus may I say that in my opinion Billy’s vocals will never be bettered. His voice reached places even he seemed surprised at. Sorely missed. So so sad.
Splitting hairs here but one of my favourite spots in the tune is after the first chorus ("Someone there") when the riff is played in the upper octave and only then drops down to the lower. Goosebumps.
As a bass player this is one bass line i have just never ever gone near for no other reason than i knew it would get under my skin and i would probably spend way to much time on it to the detriment of every other facet of my life ! well done sir you absolutely nailed it. If you watch the Alan Rankine interview on YT, its actually Rankine who played the bass line, which kind of makes sense as whenever i saw Dempsey trying to play this it was obvious he was bluffing it.
This is one of my favourites basslines of all time. Thanks for showing it being played. I've tried to figure bits of this out a few times and it's not simple - a classic
Brilliant job!! Awesome song and bassline. Really got into The Associates in the last year. Growing up in the 80s they weren't on my radar then, but what a great band, and Billy Mackenzie, what a loss. Recently acquired a crappy bass as my son is learning the drums, this will take some learning!!
I never thought I'd see anyone do a video of this. Great job! I've always wondered if Michael Dempsey was a big Chris Squire/Yes fan as the style is quite similar
According to the recent interviews with Alan Rankine, he played bass on most of, if not all, of the tracks from Sulk rather than Dempsey. Seems that Alan is an amazing multi instrumentalist as he also played most of the keyboards as well, with Martha Ladly adding additional parts on a few tracks.
fantastic!!! about time someone posted Associates bass lines.. Michael Dempsey great bass player and very different..Im born and bred in Dundee and have seen the Associates live back in the 80's..Did you just work it out from the listening to the song?
That is an outstanding play through of a fantastic piece of bass playing sir.One of my favourite bass-lines ever, always wondered how exactly Michael played it.If I start practising now I might master it in about 5 years haha, watch this space!!!
Great job, sir! I love it that this wonderful bass playing on the original stands out so much to others, it's not just me obsessing about it! You really nailed it 👍
Incredible! The lactic must be burning there. Brilliant track! It's a wonder that it hasn't been covered or sampled in some way over the years since it's release. Or maybe it has?
Sterling job my man, so many covers done badly on YT by over-enthusiastic musician's who sadly don't have the passion or talent to do the original justice however you have nailed this. Outstanding wok my friend!

Michael Dempsey, wasn't it? Or is there a version where Alan plays?

I’m aware Alan has said he played the bass on the track which of course maybe true but it sounds so much like Dempsey’s style!!
Thank you all for your kind comments
Outstanding! 🙂
Such great guitar players. luv u Billy. X ❤️
100% Class and Talent.
BILLY MACKENZIE: RIP, God Bless
Outstanding, loved the Associates and this song in particular takes a 65 year old down memory lane. And you nailed it awesome talent.
Thank you Graham!
Bonkers bass line, well done for working out.

Wonderful. I bought this single the moment I heard it. Bass musicianship off the chart. Bravo and thanks for sharing.
Quite unusual lines. It takes some athletic performance
It kind of sounds like Peter Hook with the chops and harmonic sophistication of Andy Rourke.
Total Wow, amazing.
Thank you!

Easily the best vocalist in my opinion from 🏴 🇮🇪 🏴 🏴 🇬🇧

Agreed
So well played. I hadn't realised what a fantastic base track was on this old Associates single. Thanks for posting
