THEY SAID THE WALK IN FREEZER WAS TOO WARM

  • This was a pretty typical walk in freezer service call that I get about twice a month across all my service locations. Even though I go thru this on a regular, I still treat each call as if it was my first!

I forget if it was Technology Connections or ElectroBoom that did an explanation video on CFLs and the reasons they were so hated.
All florescent tubes have a heater filament on either end to bring the mercury inside the bulb up to vaporization temperature before it can form the plazma stream (e.g. floresce).
When the bulbs first come on in a cold environment, only some of the mercury vaporizes, so you end up with a weaker plasma stream.

florescent lamps like it at around 40c or 105f on the tube itself. They get that warm by themselves no problem, but in a freezer...
If they are colder, all the gases, phosphorous coatings and stuff doesn't work that well, thats why they are dimmer and have a kind of wrong color temperature.

12:08 - In extreme cold these fluoros may even turn faint pinkish-purplish. They are filled with a very low pressure Ne-Ar filler gas mix with Hg vapor. The ionized Hg vapor is what gives a strong UV light, which the phosphor coating inside the tube converts into visible light. In extreme cold the Mercury vapor will condensate into very tiny droplets on the inner glass wall surface and other cold spots, and the gas charge will instead emit the characteristic pink-purple light of the filler gas mix, which does not radiate much UV light, thus won't make the inner phosphor coating to emit visible light. It will just partially block the filler gas glow. Once the tube warms up, the Mercury will go back into vapor state, and the tube will return to its normal brightness.

Chris, have you seen the yellow vinyl "tarps" with a hose fitting for leaks, drips, etc? The pipe fitters use them at work where they don't want water on a food production area, but don't have a big volume of water. One of the smaller ones could be of benefit on jobs like this, as long as there's a drain nearby.

Something says me a sprinkler (usually filled with water) and -18°C in the room is not the best of all possible combinations. The ice in the pipe will be thawed up by a fire though, but this could be a little to late. But there was surely a certified company installing this, so this won't be a problem, right?
