Speak to MAD Ford Engineering. Mick is a wizard with these things. There's definitely no need for it to cost anywhere near that much. There's a lot of those jobs you can do yourself, even without mechanical experience.
Lovely lightweight, I learnt to drive in one nearly 30 years ago and have owned 4 over the years, plus a lot of other Land Rovers. Don't be too concerned by the costs and figures from the specialists, you'll be able to do most of that yourself, they're very easy vehicles to learn mechanical skills on. Check e-bay for lots of the generic parts, John Craddocks and P.A. Blanchard are the place for more specialist Lightweight/military parts. Enjoy the process and I look forward to the videos of it.
Welcome to owning a classic... Take your time, knock things out as you get time. You'll eventually get it all done and it'll be something worth having in no time.
14K? Damn. Well, there's only so much time in a day, Mike! We can't be masters of everything. Nothing wrong with not knowing how to repair something someone else can. Not sure about the mold treatment, but if that works it's good to know.
I have a tip, breath slowly into a paper bag, and don't hyperventilate on the shock of the price.I laughed when you said don't choke on your cup of tea, boys.
Speak to @madfordengineering he's a specialist in Military Land Rovers, he'll probably do you a decent deal too or even let you have use of his workshop if you still want to do most yourself with his advice
You should get in touch with Mick at Mad Ford Engineering, what he doesn't know about military Land Rovers is not worth knowing. He will give you an honest opinion on what work needs doing to your Lightweight and what the costs really should be, he will be happy I'm sure to help you in any way he can.
Oh... A journey??? We can go at a extrange zone, to explore it!!! Why do you buy it??? It' s to muuuuuch!!! Too much cool!!! I salute you!!! Kisses!!!!
p.s Getting to see Dad at the end of the video was a nice treat, even tho I enjoyed the chat about the truck. Hearing Graham talk is always such a lovely experience. Thank you for everything Mike
It'll be far less once you knock out the chassis repair from that list - to the tune of 4k. The chassis repair is, as you said, full strip of the vehicle and rebuilding, so that's a 'fun' project to do over time, but the chassis is probably fixable via welding. And after that, you'll be a mechanic! Fix the springs first, and the canopy, as well as get some of the rest of the 'red' items sorted. Amber stuff can be worked on in bits and pieces over time.
I did my own springs and dampers. Replaced all corners with parabolics from GBSprings. Just remember when fitting, they are handed. Much better ride and sits slightly higher. If you can DIY 👍
Speak to Mick at Mad ford Engineering. He did a complete rebuild including new chassis for mine. Who ever quoted you 14k is ripping you off should be much less than that.
Mike, get in touch with Mick from Mad ford engineering he has restored many landrovers, and he will do you a solid and save you a lot of money from what you're being quoted also has a twitch channel @madfordengineering
Your land rover might be in that troublesome "in between era" that afflicts some car models. Old enough to still more or less restore some parts yourself but new enough where it is a bloody nightmare to do over all. (For example, the 1987 Jeep YJ used an infamously garbage Peugeot 5 speed transmission, and it is generally cheaper and easier to just swap out the thing. American Motors was in deep financial trouble at the time, and YJs suffered as a result.) BUT...750 QUID for plain Jane leaf springs?!!! Are they high?!
Scrap yards and ebay are possibly the best places to get spare parts Mike. I know plenty of people strip vehicles down and sell the parts as more money can be made that way. There are also loads of knowledgable folk who would help you out who watch your channels.
Buy a Haynes manual, they dont actually do one for a lightweight but it is essentially a series 3, If you can afford them get paralytic springs for it, Paddock spares are good, yrm for bodywork/ metal work but are expensive , just about everything thing is interchangeable apart from the bodywork and chassis
I use LR spares in Liverpool for spares, my advice would be to buy the tools and get stuck in, series and Defenders are easy things to work on and there's plenty of videos on YT.
I’ve got 2 lightweights. A LHD 2a parts rig and a 78 RHD that I rebuilt while working the phones for rovers north. Happy to help with rover question you have. I want a 7x7 military tent bad. Did take my son out camping July 4th in it for the first time. Thanks for all the knowledge you have passed along. Vermont-USA
Remember the Harry Enfield tv show and the shop owner” I saw you coming” Land Rover is as simple as brick, join a local club for knowledge and tips etc and enjoy the experience.
Canvas clean is easy paint it with dettol all over it both sides and jet wash it off after it's soaked in ... Let it dry and liquid canvas seal spray to seal it again. Can be done on your own..
Scrub the canvas with white vinegar and rinse with water and let dry. This took care of the mold on my canvas tilt and have not had a problem with it since.
I feel your pain, while not a Lightweight, I bought a 2001 Disco 2, 4 years ago for £2500. I am now just under £20k into it. It has had everything including new gearbox but a chassis which will need to be done. I bought it with a view to never selling it so I am ok with how much I have put into it and my kids love going out in it so we make memories
I have always oil-sprayed all my Landrover chassis and bulkhead. From front to back, i spray the fxxking lot!!! It covers everything in oil, prevents corrosion EVER, and it covers all the bolts and springs in oil, to allow removal of the bolts in future!!! Use a cheap engine oil and spray inside the chassis, out riggers and especially the rear of the chassis, and even the door tops, which stop corrosion and allows the glass to slide easily!!!! Trust me, i had a few of these things and they are great!!!!!nLol.
When you own/drive an older vehicle, you need to learn how to fix it. Trust me, it pays to learn! 😊 And a suggestion is to check out a channel called Maximus Ironthumper. He has a 25 odd video playlist where he fixed an older landrover(that he still drives). He also an ongoing restoration series on a later landrover, its Project Kermit. They may be of help. Max is in England, near Avon from memory.
I owned a series 3 since 1982, bet if looked now it would be leaking oil somewhere and the front propshaft boot will need changing, its like the Forth bridge. The chassis is the main thing give it a good paint, work out what parts need replacing, new chassis a last resort. Great thing is theres loads online, youtube about landie repairs nowadays.
I take it the £14,000 is inclusive of fitting a new chassis? I would say it depends on the state of your current chassis but it might be better to repair the one you have got?? I'm sure some of the Land Rover enthusiasts would be able to help you, some might even have stock piles of spares they don't mind selling to another enthusiast. It might even be possible for enthusiasts near by to give you help to work on your own vehicle. As you know, doing the work yourself gives such satisfation but if you are offered help then consider taking it. It would be a good way to advance the build. Best of luck Mike, i am quite envious .
I am not a mechanic!, but I wonder how many fans such as myself here might be? perhaps with enough people or the right few, this job could be well simple enough one would hope. If it was not too much trouble I'm sure some ladies or lads, might be enough to restore such a respectful vehicle.
Buy a haynes manual and get stuck in. Old landrovers are the best to learn about cars as they just nuts and bolts. I was buying landrovers from 13 when i should have been at school taught my self everything from haynes manuels. if i can do it anyone can. Take pics and label parts as they come off you be fine go for it.
Nice truck the military is the way to go they build better trucks than commercial trucks you can find junk yards with road tested parts and save a lot or buy another 81 with that God parts you need I wrenched for 20 years keep fixing it up !!!
Steamwally and Maximus Iron Thumper will guide you. Geoffrey Croker is also excellent. You will find someone nearby to help you. The front end is not so hard. once you get the bolts free. All the best mate. Paddock Spares in Matlock are good. Never buy Britpart spares, if you can avoid it. They are mostly very poor quality.
White vinegar mixed with water to get rid of mould. Mix it 50/50 and spray it on affected area. You can increase the vinegar if you need a stronger mix.
For parts there a place near me (20 minute drive) called safari engineering well worth a go for those light weight parts, it where I got a majority of the parts for my Land Rover series 3 hi cap. That of Kieth gotts in Alton. I know some where along the lines in on of your videos you mentioned you were from Hampshire, both of those places are in Hampshire. It may fall under the radar but I’m sure many people here are willing to help you in any way. I know I would in a heart beat!
Power Wash/degrease inside and out including the engine and knock off as much rust as possible from the under carriage. Doing this will let you really lay eyes on every nook and cranny of the vehicle and formulate a plan of attack. Obviously, watch how too videos for each of the task and find a good Range Rover forum/group, make some friends and perhaps do a collab or two for the channel. You may be able to borrow some specialty tools and get some good advice a long the way. Looking forward to it. One day I will be doing the same for a Fiat Pinnaferina Spider 1980-84, and I cant wait for all of the headaches and frustrations... a passion of love!
You can do the lot youself so easy to work on you dont need to be a mechanic just basic tools join the lightweight club and get the original springs stripped and sandblasted painted will work as they should then they need greesing forget parabolic springs too high up and look wrong on a lightweight.chassis change worth it rather than spending on rough welding go to ri hards chassis forget anyone over water selling chassis
OMG, that is insane. Did you take it to a landrover garage 😂😂😂😂. Its a big meccano set. Im sure you could find a landrover buff to help you out. And getting the parts yourself would save you a fortune. I did my Series 3 and I'm no mechanic. Went to landrover parts sales like Billingaquadrone. You can pick up a new rag top a lot cheaper. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Mike mate your getting ripped off so bad, you might aswell just research how to fix it yourself lad, much love, love the chamnel bro keep it up. Just remember if u see another landy on the road wave at them us landy people do that.
I Used to work for a company which tried to fabricate bulkheads from scratch, we managed it but it soon went under 🤣🤔 pegasus parts are still going though
Speak to MAD Ford Engineering. Mick is a wizard with these things. There's definitely no need for it to cost anywhere near that much. There's a lot of those jobs you can do yourself, even without mechanical experience.
Wow where the hell are they getting there prices from !!!

When you own an old landrover you learn how to be a mechanic
Certainly do!
This Land Rover might become a long term companion of TA Outdoors!
Looking forward to the truck overnighters coming up.
Welcome to owning a classic... Take your time, knock things out as you get time. You'll eventually get it all done and it'll be something worth having in no time.
My husband is a mechanic (35 years) and he burst out laughing when you said you wanted to fix it in a month. 😊But wishing you all the best.
14K? Damn. Well, there's only so much time in a day, Mike! We can't be masters of everything. Nothing wrong with not knowing how to repair something someone else can. Not sure about the mold treatment, but if that works it's good to know.
I’ve just replaced a lightweight chassis, supply and fit 4500 done
I have a tip, breath slowly into a paper bag, and don't hyperventilate on the shock of the price.I laughed when you said don't choke on your cup of tea, boys.

Great video, Love your dad, such excitement to talk about all the cool stuff he is doing. Thanks for sharing.
You should get in touch with Mick at Mad Ford Engineering, what he doesn't know about military Land Rovers is not worth knowing. He will give you an honest opinion on what work needs doing to your Lightweight and what the costs really should be, he will be happy I'm sure to help you in any way he can.
If you had contacted me when I messaged you, I could of helped you, as I said my business specialist in military Landrovers
Oh... A journey??? We can go at a extrange zone, to explore it!!! Why do you buy it??? It' s to muuuuuch!!! Too much cool!!! I salute you!!! Kisses!!!!
Omg a new chassis £10k!!!!
I’m currently doing a chassis swap on my channel…..
PA Blanchard are specialist with Ex MOD land rovers, John Craddocks hold parts a fair amount of parts will be useable from non lightweight land rovers
p.s Getting to see Dad at the end of the video was a nice treat, even tho I enjoyed the chat about the truck. Hearing Graham talk is always such a lovely experience. Thank you for everything Mike

Used to drive those when new in the 1980s, they broke down regularly even then.
Lovely to see those life updates with your dad :)
White vinegar-water mix and a brush. Rinse with cold water and *dry* *thoroughly*
LR Series parts at Shiptonthorpe near York.
A new galvanized chassis should cost about 2k plus vat.
Great looking structure now in the garden that,s really art.
For mould I would use “wet & forget” worked great on old caravan and also old deck chair material.
Will be interesting to see how you work around these issues and needed repairs. 👍
TWO great update subjects in one video!
Your land rover might be in that troublesome "in between era" that afflicts some car models. It's a labour of love, Mike, worth it, though.

Love it! The more these vehicles cost to repair the more restored vehicles should appreciate in value. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

14 thousand quid?! Bloody hell…still you do what you can, and fork over the rest. Cheers Mike!
You should get some advice from Kris Harbour, he's a man of many talents!
Dry ice cleaning for the canvas roof Mike check it out!
You will learn as you go along. I'd like to see the videos of you fixing it up.
It'll be like triggers broom by the time you've finished.
🤣
😂

Been waiting for more coverage of the land rover, the only reason I subbed to your 2nd channel
More to come!
£750 for springs, wow. Definitely a DIY job for a lot less than that.
Buy a haynes manual and get stuck in. Old landrovers are the best to learn about cars as they just nuts and bolts. I was buying landrovers from 13 when i should have been at school taught my self everything from haynes manuels. if i can do it anyone can. Jones Springs, all four for about £500. In service, they would have been painted with a brush or roller.
You can clean up the mold with white vinegar.
White vinegar mixed with water to get rid of mould. Mix it 50/50 and spray it on affected area. You can increase the vinegar if you need a stronger mix.
John Craddocks for parts. They stock most things at good prices.
The Land Rover lightweight front looks even more bad ass than the normal one, is it true that it's axles are shorter than the normal Land Rover?
On the made of aluminium?
You and Simon a Bloke in the woods should collaborate.
For parts there a place near me (20 minute drive) called safari engineering well worth a go for those light weight parts, it where I got a majority of the parts for my Land Rover series 3 hi cap. Try to do everything yourself. And keep it original and just keep up with service and enjoy it. Road leagal first and just enjoy
Sounds like my Landrover Defender 110 😂
Buy a set of spanners and do it yourself, you’ll earn the money back off youtube
I only know the basic stuff 😅
@LifeofMikeOfficial
Lots of learning. That'd be videos about it. I'd be happy to learn right along with you.
One job at a time Mike, pick the ones you think will be easy and chip away. We’ll be here to watch..
Off road clubs. Will have a good list of places for parts.
Power Wash/degrease inside and out including the engine and knock off as much rust as possible from the under carriage. Doing this will let you really lay eyes on every nook and cranny of the vehicle and formulate a plan of attack. I'd really avoid painting anything you don't need to, value is in being original/patina. Saves you money too.
£52 to replace rocker cover gasket - for undoing 3 bolts putting a £5 gasket on and doing up 3 bolts🤣
Mate I just had my Gold 1950s Jaeger-LeCoultre watch serviced, needed a new crown, stripdown and reoil. £2000
Dang. This is def they type of project to take on only if you can do most of the work yourself.
Buying a "Can of Worms" leaves one on the hook! Regards
Cause what an adventure you are about to embark on..
I bought all the parts overtime and paid just the Labour on. My landie they up the price for parts, but eventually I learned to do it myself
Best investment is a Haynes manual
OMG, that is insane.
Did you take it to a landrover garage 😂😂😂😂.
Its a big meccano set.
Im sure you could find a landrover buff to help you out.
And getting the parts yourself would save you a fortune.
I did my Series 3 and I'm no mechanic.
Went to landrover parts sales like Billingaquadrone. You can pick up a new rag top a lot cheaper.

Vinegar will take mold off
Ok take out the chassis and its around the 4000 mark which makes it a lot more manageable
You didn't mention the brakes, Mike. Do they work? I note that there are no airbags.😊😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅❤
JRL Parts is rover parts specialist in somerset in case it helps....
Dude, dude, duuude! £14,000? Dude.
These are upper end prices, presumably genuine LR parts. You can do this for a lot less
£1800 for swivel replacement? The G spec kits are only £200 a side, what's their hourly rate? It's a messy job but not a massive job.
Is seeing an older Defender like this akin to seeing a old Willys jeep here in the states?
I Used to work for a company which tried to fabricate bulkheads from scratch, we managed it but it soon went under 🤣🤔 pegasus parts are still going though
Best of luck 🤞 looking forward to watching:) a guy near me has done one an it a beauty:)
I assume you've checked out Landrover Sophie?
I have heard ebay is a pretty good place to get old car parts, though that was from a Canadian
Life worth project.. get rid or keep it off road
Mike you got a really really good quote didn't you.?
They give you crazy prices because they don’t want to work on it 😂
Get your money out blss ya but great watch Mike
You have been taken up for a ride young mike. DIY I think.
Talk to maximus iron thumper he is a genius with land rovers
Sorry to say, but that guy selling it, saw you coming 😂😂. Only joking. For it's age that's not too bad.
Best make friends with Maximus Ironthumper 😀
