    All of you here need to stop complaining and thank this man for working so hard to teach you people things you don’t even understand in the first place wow. Thanks my friend for the awesome vids. Now can you use HSS at night. And one more thing Ladies and Gentleman you can accomplish high-speed sync with most speedlites that you probably already own

    Jay P., I finally gave in and purchased my Baja B4 after watching this video. I used it for the first time this weekend and it performed like a charm - and NO cables! Yay! I was on the beach in Toronto with a monoblock, just great stuff. Paired with a 80x100cm softbox, the light was dreamy. Thanks for the info.

    not a good video on HSS, blue background kinda weird and background looked over exposures, the whole idea of HSS is to correctly expose background or even under expose to get the subject to pop, the girl was cute though

    Another great video from this channel that I was able to get some screenshots of equipment and set-ups from. I still have to use speedlights and variable ND-- and hope the subject doesn't plan on moving faster than 1/200 second, but that's alright.
    You gotta love the people complaining about these demo pictures even though the thumbnail is what brought most of them in... (That, or people just really don't know what HSS is and were drawn in by the technical promise of the title).

    Thanks for all your video assistance to make all my pictures look good. Talking about Flash High Sync, this a good way to shot in DSLR above 1/4000 with flash. To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.

  • @aluzexp

    Is there really a need for HS sync in this shoot? You can easily change ISO 320 at 1/500s to ISO 100 at 1/160s and keep the same f stop. The 5DIII he is using is fully capable of syncing at 1/160s. Am I missing something?

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      aluzexp I used ISO 320 for this particular shoot because it was a little overcast the day of the shoot. If it had been a bright sunny day, I would have dropped my ISO to 100 but 1/160 would have been too bright for the background.

    You can also achieve the same effect-using an - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral
    Density Filter if you normally set your flash exposure to F/11 you
    would then set your aperture to F/2.8 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral
    Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but
    significantly less depth of field.

    Way to go!!! Put down every beginner and pro for using those little lights that you hate so much. I'm not going to say your pictures were horrible, but there could have been more separation and if your not going to direct the model then delegate someone who knows how to.

Instead they are my take on what works and doesn't work in this business.Thanks for your feedback!

    What's the downside to using a Variable ND filter instead of HSS? Obviously HSS will work with fast-paced action, where a VND filter will not, but for portraits this is not an issue.

    • @michaelayap1782
      @michaelayap1782 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using nd filters will degrade the quality of image because you are adding element in your lens it makes the background dark and so is the subject. So you still need flash when shooting portraits

    I can understand that the lower the power, the higher the freezing speed, but in the dark, if the HSS is bright, how does t0.1 and HSS show the graph? Why does it take more power?

  • @RichardBrownPhotography
    @RichardBrownPhotography 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just testing these and am finding you can't really use HSS above 1/4000th because of the falloff. This means that you are not going to be able to over power full sunlight in a situation you might end up in sadly. however the recycle time is much better than the off brand units I had purchased to test a couple months ago.

    Such shot can be easily taken by normal TTL settings. If you are not darkening the background by exposing the subject i dont think HSS is required. With HSS you can have increased the shutter speed till 1/4000 to 1/8000 to get some better HSS shots.

    • @TheSlantedLens

      High speed sync works between the trigger and the flash unit. So if you have a dedicated trigger to your flash unit is will work seamlessly.

  • @GregoryEsman
    @GregoryEsman ปีที่แล้ว

    A bit overly complicated in my mind.
    1) With flash off, expose for the background. Ie. Make the background look how you want it to look
    2) Turn flash on. Test shot. Now expose your subject using flash power
    3) Done.
    Not sure what the whole thing about syncing aperture to flash power was about.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't care what your aperture is then what you said is absolutely true. But if you are controlling your photography and you want a shallow depth of field you can only get it by using an ND filter or high speed sync in direct sunlight.

    Hi, its obvious your are a quite highly qualified photographer with very expensive camera and equipment. I have just purchased a SB-910 speedflash and Camera Nikon D5500 I can tell you that it will not sync to 1/1500 of a second. high speed. and if I were to shoot high speed as you say, my battery would last only for 10 shots max.

      The SB-910 does do high speed sync but it puts out very little power in doing so and could not be used for a model shoot like this. www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/using-auto-fp-high-speed-sync-to-illuminate-fast-sports-action.html

    I've been looking for some heavy duty light stands ... Which ones did you use in this shoot?

      @TheSlantedLens  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gabre Cameron These are Matthews stands, you can find the 12' ones here: bhpho.to/1rpSMYD. Lately, I have been using Kupo's click stand more and more and have found them very useful: bhpho.to/1r2oAlz.

      When I am only using Dynalite Baja strobes, I'll use the trigger from Dynalite. Otherwise, I use PocketWizards.

    Sure HSS is a great feature. Great shoot BTW.
    But for that setup, the result of 1/500s f4.5 iso320 can be easily achave by using iso100 1/160s f4.5. HSS is a waste in this shoot.

    Hopefully people will find the HSS explanation useful... but HSS wasn't even necessary here! The ISO was increased, just to put the shutter speed into HSS territory.
    If your settings were 1/500th, f4.5, ISO 320... then you could get the same exposure without going into HSS (1/200th, f4.5, ISO 125)

    High speed sync as it applies to on camera flash would be of far more value to the people watching TH-cam. I shunned it for years as an unreliable gimmick. Lately I've been exploring it and it's interesting. The sun makes a great hair light.

    What's with all the fancy studio gears? You think most people here would go out and buy all those gears just to learn about HSS.
    Why not just use one or two speedlites, take some pics and show us, then the rest of us would be more impressed.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well this is a lesson *about* high speed sync, so that's the gear you need to accomplish it this way.

    • @eyebeebak
      @eyebeebak 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      People only need a speedlite with HSS to accomplish the same thing you're doing without all the fancy equipments.

      Ж dude if you don't have the money to buy a Strobe don't cuss around getting bitter. go make the money for it... high speed sync with a speedlight using modifiers to soften light? neither do you know nothing about the art, nor are you willing to learn from those more experienced...if you are so stubborn...upload a video of yourself using high speed sync with a speedlight with softbox in daylight... let's see...

    All my outdoor shots at www.allansinclair.com were done w/1 YN flash (100) and the indoor ones w/1 flashpoint strobe (199)..

    I can take those same pictures without HSS. Also, the exposure was not very impressive. Trust me when photographers started shooting if using a mirror was perfect to use for a fill light we would have all been using mirrors for fill light by now. Never use mirrors for fill lights, that's what you have reflectors for.
