    This was an amazing video, which was flawless. I loved everything about the video. I loved how you explained the rules to the boy several times so be understood the instructions. I enjoyed the newspaper game which was simple and creative at the same time. Your video was almost as good as Garry Landreth Play Therapy. I hope you can make some more videos in the future. God Bless.

    Hi Jonathan. Was the paper punching activity to observe impulsivity and direction following? Also, what was the hoop shooting activity for? Thanks for posting this video by the way.

    Great video. Thx so much for sharing. May I ask what is the therapeutic benefit of this directed play? I understand the benefits in free expression, but not 2nd part. Thx again for your videos & for your time

      michael spark in the beginning of the video I was using a non directive approach where I was allowing the child to have freeplay and independence while only tracking the child. Meaning following the child's play by responding to what they are doing. In the second part a more directive approach was used to set boundaries and rules. Thanks for watching, I hope this helped

    To be honest, even as a child, I think the constant reflective comments would bother me

      Man of Faith Because, like, “Why are you narrating what I’m doing? I already know” May stem from performance anxiety. My daycare report when I was four said that I would look at the alphabet chart and identify letters, but stopped if I knew the teacher was watching me.

    Is there a reason why you called everything a "thing" is it so that he can label what he is doing? Or was that not strategic?

      In play therapy, therapists do not name objects because its the child's world to create. The focus is their play. The children tell stories via their play. What we may perceive as a plane may be a jet or flying saucer. It allows for creativity for the child and an opportunity to tell their story.

    why was the child referred? I would like to know so that I can understand what I am looking for. I am an ABA therapist and sometimes i struggle with seeing the results of play therapy, the point of it all.

      I believe play therapy can help the child feel more comfortable and allow them to open up more well they are playing and having fun.

    • @piercevincent5854
      @piercevincent5854 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Play is something all children do. So play therapy uses the common ground. How can you get a child to open and voice their trauma? Through play. Through play therapy they can draw, sing a song, or use sandtray because it serves as a medium for them to use when describe trauma. Also play therapy looks at impusivity, direction following, and self control as demonstrated in the later parts of the video. Through play therapy the child's autonomy can be reinforced because it allows them to make decisions. Children do not really get that option.

    • @HoldupHen

      I'm not a play therapist, but I think some of them work too hard to stay evidence based and forget to just explore and play with the child. Children can sense when the rhythm is off. It takes time to get good at this approach, but many forget over time to just play with the child in my opinion.

    Is this nondirective play therapy?

  • @r3sili3nt777

    Why is it important for the child to name the objects he/she is playing with first before the therapist calls it by its name?

    • @susanpdame
      @susanpdame 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If the therapist names the object, we are taking meaning away from the child as the child may have intended for it to be something else is the main reason.

      In a post above he said this was not an actual client, he is a volunteer from his church

  • @LifewithSilas6
    @LifewithSilas6 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the beginning you told the child he could play with the toys however he wanted to. This is not correct in play therapy for the purpose of limit sitting. What would you have done if the child pointed a toy gun at you and wanted to shoot you?

    • @LifewithSilas6
      @LifewithSilas6 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Setting*

    • @HangoutwithSimone
      @HangoutwithSimone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Key DS if you are in the field you know that mistakes can happen. I'm very sure in the event the kid pointed the gun at him, he world correct it n set limits. However, limit setting should be minimal hence the reason why he may have not set the limits initially

    • @ajayddave5809
      @ajayddave5809 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think it would be weird to have a toy gun and not expect that a kid might want to shoot it. However, if a kid treated some object like a gun and wanted to shoot it at the therapist, why not let him? He could be processing some trauma and by "limit-setting" you are preventing the kid from doing that.

      No two therapists are the same. Maybe this is just how he does things. It’s not your place to judge how someone else does therapy.
