Yes it is because the "Gauls" and primitivism was wiped out by the Roman's and those thereafter. The monotheistic mental-rational consciousness structure eradicated the magic and mythic consciousness structures. Drew Hempel and the Radical Anthropology group he cites, have a lot of info on the first modern humans originating in southern Africa, the Khoisan people. And they initiated their youth into spiritual healing training while dancing around the fire and celibate until they had a personal experience with the n'om/kundalini (which then became symbolized as the Egyptian cobra on the third eye of the gods and priests). There is an antropologist or explorer who documents the electric-like healing he had with the San peoples. His account is given in a video here on TH-cam entitled - 'The San Their Magic and Their Plants' -

Interesting discussion! One critical piece missing in the Soma discussion - and in most discussions on this mushroom that i see - is Donald Teeters discovery of the fleece mold that grows on Amanitas when they are rehydrated. If Soma is Amanita Muscaria, then the mold is without doubt the second "woolen" filter and the "Fleece" the texts talk about and not just simply a wool filter to remove solids. Also the various hymns won't make sense until you take this into account. eg. "Soma grows great with food".

It is truly amazing that certain previous writers on the Amanita muscaria / Soma connection have not focused on preparation of the mushroom for pharmacologic purpose, since a very large percent of the Soma Hymns appear to be devoted to it. The exact same criticism could be made against certain writers on the Amanita muscaria / Alchemy connection; in fact, the most popular one publicly and vehemently opposes the theory that ‘it’s all about preparation’.

i was thinking about the 3 / trinity of A. Muscaria that you mentioned @radicalmycology and i like to think of Mukhomor offering knowledge or power. so that accounts for the duality. but there is an intrinsic third party/force/perspective and that is the user/seeker. the person consuming the fly agaric fulfills the trinity and the power of the 3.

I looked in the fly agaric book but I didn’t see any clear reports on experiences putting those two together, only about urine and blueberry etc. I think I will try it soon this week. What’s the point of making a commercial product when people can just try that themselves though ? I don’t think wide scale commercial products with amanita are good because of the difficulty/impossibility of cultivating it. It could put mushroom at risk

Sadly. Amanita Muscaria is not what was used in Soma. It'd be cool if it were, don't get me wrong i love mushrooms, but it doesn't withstand even light scrutiny. The Rig Veda is very clear about where the plant comes from, what it's shape is, what it tastes like raw, how to process the plant, how the drink is prepared, and what the effects of it are, and you have to do some serious mental gymnastics to make any mushroom fit. Soma was a stimulant with no psychedelic properties. The priests drank it to stay awake and pray to Indra to help in his battle against Vritra, and Indra drank it to give himself strength to defeat his enemies. The descriptions in the Rig Veda match that of a stimulant like caffeine, not a psychedelic or dissociative. Soma "quickens" the drinker, helps "subdue enemies", gives "eloquence", and "strengthens for great deeds". It is also said to "fend off sleep". It was clearly Ephedra (containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, the precursors to amphetamines), the same plant used in the closely related Avestan Haoma ritual of the Zoroastrians. There's no need to complicate this, the simple and obvious answer is the correct one. Also, consuming mushrooms is prohibited for Brahmins (priests), so that kind of complicates matters.

@@yungfrogleg yeah you're right, if any mushroom would be sattvic it would be cubensis, but if you look at how Soma was prepared and the environment the RV says it was collected from, Soma was definitely not a mushroom. I've grown and prepared mushrooms for over a decade, and the very detailed process described the RV makes absolutely no sense for mushrooms of any kind. I really don't know why people are obsessed with the idea it was a mushroom. There's really nothing in the actual text of the RV to support that idea. The Ephedra plant contains the chemical ephedrine, which is a precursor to amphetamines, and anyone who's taken MDMA or Adderall and then reads the 9th mandala will see some pretty shocking similarities between that kind of experience and what is described as the effects of Soma in the RV.
