The 1994 World Cup Final was the first football match I ever watched, and Roberto Baggio was the first footballer I ever knew. My dad was a huge fan of his and was convinced that Italy would win. When Italy finaly lost, you could really tell he was devastated. Even now, when we talk about that final again, he still regrets why Sacchi didn't put in one of Zola, Casiraghi, or Bepe Signori to take the penalty because Baggio was clearly playing with pain in his leg. I was seven years old at the time. Time flies by so quickly. It feels like just yesterday my dad woke me up early on a holiday to watch the game.
Sacchi was an egomaniac. It's crazy that they put a man with a serious injury to shoot the 5th penalty. With that hamstring injury Baggio shouldn't have taken a penalty at all (Dino Baggio and Signori should have taken a PK). But even if Baggio insisted to shoot a PK he should have been the 1st of 4th kicker (exactly what Baresi and Massaro were) . The pressure for an injured man would have been enormously easier than what it came to be. Sacchi fucked up Italy's penalty kick strategy and order.
Baggio carried Italy to the final and picked up a hamstring injury in the semi-final. He played the final anyway but was clearly hampered by the injury. Without the injury, I don’t think penalties would have been needed because he had a few chances that he normally would have scored.
Since Italy lost a major tournament final for the first and last time on penalties they got into 2 more penalty shootouts in a major tournament final and won them both world cup 2006 final against France Italy won 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw and Euro 2020 final against England Italy won 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw
If Baggio had scored and Italy won, he would've become immortal. He would be worshipped at the same level as Pele and Maradona. He was an unbelievable player, but because of this miss, he never took the place he deserved in the football firmament.
We're the same age. The 1994 World Cup final was the first football match I ever watched, and Roberto Baggio was the first footballer I ever knew. My dad was a huge fan of his back then and was convinced Italy would win. Even now, when we talk about that final again, he still regrets why Sacchi didn't bring on one of Zola, Casiraghi, or Bepe Signori to take the penalty because Baggio was clearly playing with pain in his leg.
Baggio was an outstanding player with Juventus scoring 78 goals in 141 games, 27 goals in 57 games with Italy, and 218 goals in 488 career games in total. More than respectable. It's a shame that he is mostly remembered for failing that penalty, when even the greatest Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have missed penalties at big games.
Baggio wasn't scapegoated for this loss. All Italians knew that he had carried the team the entire tournament, and was playing with a severe injury. Baggio is one player that pretty much all Italians have never stopped loving. It's only the coaches who didn't like him.
A shame, because he was such a fantastic player and this penalty would likely have been inconsequential anyway. He still has one of my favourite first touches of all time: th-cam.com/video/iwEenLgSRY4/w-d-xo.html An outrageous talent
Heyy ..this is too much , this penalty don't define him. Two player missed and even if he score this , Brazil still have Advantage , probably Bebeto was next in the line ... he would have finished it ..
Simply put, Italy go out in the Round of 16 without Baggio. It's an understatement to say he carried the team. He WAS the team
Shameless
Yep, he carried the team to the final, it was a heroic performance from that goal against Nigeria.

they dont like him very much in Florence.

An outrageous talent
For baggio it was as national for Gyan it was a continent
Safe to say Asamoah Gyan is the only other man who can have an idea of how Roberto Baggio felt
Your continent reaching the semifinals vs your country winning the cup
