- 'Bhinna Shadja', a film on the unparalleled contributions of Ganasaraswati Padmavibhushan Kishori Amonkar (fondly known as Tai) to Indian classical music, is also an exploration of larger debates on the nature of art itself. Often criticised for experimenting with classical traditions of the Japiur-Atrauli Gharana, Tai nonetheless strove in her passionate resolve to emphasise evocation of moods over an orthodox rendition of ragas. This vilification by conservatives however did not deter her audiences and other contemporary artists from appreciating her transcendental aesthetics. The film explores some of these questions as not just pertaining to her own life but as artistic dilemmas that resonate in many other contexts. Tai's apprehension that with age her music might begin to elude her is also one of the most fundamental predicaments that artists face.

Zakirjis commentry at the start is absolutely spot on. For e.g. her Shankara rendering is not only the greatest example of a Shankara, probably the greatest piece of khayal music in the 20th century. brought tears to my eyes.
I feel blessed to be able to listen to Kishoriji. I wish I could carry her music to the other world and play it to God. He too would be blessed. She is a genuine Bharat Ratna. Rajendra TANDON.
The Raga KIshori Tai is singing at the very beginning is Ecstasy...that is for only for 2 mints...truly divine..That 2 mints will give u worlds most calm feeling which cant be bought by spending million dollars.....
Kishori Amonkar at the height of her prowess was a gods gift to mankind. Every time I hear her and the only word that comes to my mind is "perfect".

The temple depicted in the beginning is the Shri Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla in Goa

That's what I thought. It looked so familiar. I'm glad this was not destroyed by the Portuguese. It is one of the few of the oldest temples in Goa that was spared. Awesome documentary!

Many Many thanks to Amol and Sandhyaji for bringing this to us. Its always an out of world experience to hear Tai sing but to hear her explain the thoughts behind her music is a treasure to cherish. I would request to go further and make a full series of her lectures, demonstrations (or publish from past) which would help understand and appreciate this music for the generations to come.
