I'm a huge EVF user although whenever I hand my camera to anyone, they hardly use the EVF as if it does not even exist. That being said, I understand the lack of EVF of these lower end camera as it is supposed to attract cell phone users. However, what camera companies are still hesitant is putting in great LCDs that are comparable to modern day cell phone displays and with that, better batteries in these compact bodies. Also if they are truly wanting to attract said cell phone users, they just need USB-C, no need for HDMI, needs internal memory and better wifi connectivity to transfer photos/videos to phones.
Typical 1.04M dots (720x480) 3" screen is 288 PPI which isn't far off Apple's definition of "retina" (300 PPI). 1.62M (900x600) is 360 PPI at 3", and 1.84M (960x640) is 385 PPI. Even flagships only have 2.1M (1024x682) with 410 PPI. Record goes to GFXs with 2.36M (1024x768) and 400 PPI on 3.2" screens. Fujifilm also had 1280x720 screens in X-A7 and X-T200, but those models are long discontinued only after a couple of years on sale.
You know guys, you are just you whenever I listen to your podcast. Your grievances, complains, annoyances are very well received as long as they are genuinely yours. So, keep it going, here is to another year!. Merry Christmas!
Lumix have such a great back catalogue of small uniquely inovative MFT cameras that would be great with an electronics and focusing update just none of the ones that they have here. My favourite is the GX9.
You guys missed an ongoing grievance. Why do all the image transfer apps still suck? Figure it out already! I can count on the Sony creators app to crash once before I can actually use it and transfer files at a snails pace but no more than 5 feet from my camera. Yeesh.
My hypothesis is that 1) camera makers are hardware engineers, not programmers. 2) Pros don't demand it because they take 1k+ shots/session, so shooting tethered or transfer via a card reader is much faster than using WiFi, not to mention less battery drain on both the mobile and the camera.
@@paulyeung6608 yea I’ve tried both ways I usually use 2.4ghz for “better range” when using the remote but it still sucks. Either way I still get about 16-20 seconds per full size jpeg on transfer even on 5ghz
@@paulyeung6608 I’ve tried both and it’s still about 16-18 seconds per jpeg on my A7CII with 5ghz. I generally use the 2.4ghz for the potential added signal strength using remote shooting at a distance but it’s still pretty bad.
It makes sense that the X-M5 has no EVF, but I hope Fuji also revives the X-E with similar specs to the X-M5 but keeping the EVF, and just (maybe) only $100 USD more expensive. Happy holidays guys!
Thanks for the podcast all year guys, it's been awesome. I only have one v important question about today's episode: where on earth did Jaron find such a massive santa hat??
My mom bought these years ago and I’ve never seen any like them since. It’s legit warm too. It’s kinda stretched funny over my headphones here but it fits normally otherwise. -Jaron
1:22:50 Yes Jaron! I loved my old Nikkor 105mm f2.5 for much of last century and I still have it. And yes! Jordan I feel the same way now about my Olympus 75mm f1.8. Smooth, hefty and sickly sharp both of them. Great episode guys!!
1:09:48 I have to defend Chris about listening comedy on speakers(very quietly) because we the gen x got that from our parents listening to radio transistors in the 70s early 80s. Other than that he is a monster.
Thank you for everything you have done this year,. I wish you a Happy Christmas and a fantastic 2025 to all the PetaPixel team and your families. The Podcast has got me through many hard times in 2025, you are a great team and the folks behind the scenes are brilliant too. Please keep the Monster watch going, it's very funny.
CHRIS! GLOVES! OK, I have zero experience with the COLD here in Australia, but my daily gloves for shooting I use are just fingerless gym/weight training gloves. Keep the tactility in your fingers for cameras and keep the rest of your hands from being exposed!
In keeping with the Seinfeld theme, to the people complaining about someone's look or hairstyle or calling someone a fanboy, "No soup for you, next!" you monsters.
What a great idea! I love the airing of grievances. And I do have a problem with you people. Stop complaining about the lack of EVFs!! But seriously, I hope you and your families have a merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
The Bluetooth spec has 2 main weaknesses, high latency, and low bit rate. Lossless audio is about 1.4 kbps at 16 bits, double that for 32bit float audio. Bluetooth 5 has a practical limit of 1.3 kbps, so you're going to be forced to use a compressed bit stream to transmit high quality audio to a camera through Bluetooth, or just get accustomed to lower quality audio. At least you can shift audio delays during post for any possible sync issues due to latency. Bluetooth wasn't developed with this in mind. And ironically Bluetooth is the biggest reason why wireless USB never took off a decade+ ago which would have offered higher bandwidth by now after a few versioning updates. For gloves, I tried using a pair of carpenter gloves, which has fingertips omitted, but it didn't work for me. I may try fishing gloves, some of which has the little caps for the missing fingertips.
I have the Panasonic GX85 in my car and am looking for something with the same footprint to upgrade to. I would love to see it updated with the sensor and autofocus the Panasonic G9 II has but it absolutely has to have an EVF and stabilization. I tend to use my Fuji X-T5, G9 II or Z8 more often because 16 mp is not quiet enough. Panasonic or OM SYSTEM please grant me my holiday wish!
I never like to see an EVF be removed from a camera, but I have a ZS200, and the viewfinder on that its pretty terrible. I prefer having a terrible EVF to no EVF, but if the EVF is bad, I don't think its a massive loss. The back panel appears to be the same as the S5ii, which I find to be very bright, so I'm not sure I'd miss it too much on the ZS99.
I think Jordan exudes a little George’s dad at times with some of the behind the camera comments. “NOBODY CARES!” 😂 Love the chemistry between Chris and Jordan.
I agree with you Chris.. While my cameras can do great video I am all about photography. In fact I have not even used the video but once in my Z9 yet, only once in my OM1 MKii and only once in my Nikon D850. Most of the many photographers I hang with just don't use the video as they are focused on getting the photographs. My Christmas list for 2025 is a new Nikon film camera like the F4 or F6, two new Pentax cameras one a new successor to the 645n (with a quicker shutter and better light meter) and my number one wish is a successor to the 645z (with IBS, better noise control, maybe some of those in camera computational photography and maybe a 75megapixel senor), Ok a850lso a successor in the DLSR line for Nikon for the D850 for all us F mount lens people.
Yes, post purchase support. Good work Nikon. Here's what gets under my skin. OMD screwed the original OM1 purchasers big time, after promising "major robust firmware updates to protect your investment." No doubt once the OM1III is released, you can kiss any "robust" updates to the Mark II goodbye. I for one won't forget that, and if I buy any more m.four-thirds equipment, it will be Panasonic. (I miss Olympus!)
1:07:00 I can't explain it but Ted's hands on his book's cover also feel icky to me for some reason. Maybe it's their shape and position, maybe they're too bright and distract from pitch-black camera, or maybe it's the thumbnail of his video about the book showing SECOND SET OF HANDS.
My grievance is about not being able to edit my Olympus RAW ORF files on my Android phone. Snapseed doesn't support them, and the Olympus app doesn't support RAW editing either. It would be so nice to edit when I'm out in the field (mostly wildlife) before sharing on social media.
@PetaPixel, in line with the EVFless camera, the epidemic of selfie screens on full frame cameras HAS TO STOP. I hope you guys can help us keep a few Fuji/Nikon Z8 style screens. Not all cameras should be made for self filming youtubers. (It is a very narrow but unfortunately too influencial part of the market). The ZF does feel weird with a youtuber screen.
Jordan is a gorgeous monster. I like monsters in the closet more. That's obviously Chris with his gloves. So to answer the question: I very much liked the monster segment and I'd like to see more.
Jaron if you are playing cyberpunk you should for sure watch edgerunners now! There's multiple things in cyberpunk that you need to watch edgerunners to understand even a whole questline! Plus nothing in edgerunners will spoil cyberpunk 2077 for you!
Thanks! I think you should do the monster reviews again. If not, then you really are monsters. Jarron, you should wear a different hat for each episode just to prank the viewers at least for a little while. Chris feel better soon and everything else at PETA Pixel stay healthy. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Keep the segment going you monsters

Love the monsters part!
The monsters one was so fun!! Please keep this for next year!
Making us comment to keep a segment going for next year! you MONSTERS
Can't wait for the FEATS OF STRENGTH!

My sony app crashes the first attempt too! But i turned on the 5ghz transmitter on the a7iv and it’s much faster. maybe you haven’t done that yet?

You guys are monsters for making me leave a comment in order to get this segment to get next year again
If you don't do the monster tracker again next year, all three of you are absolute monsters. No question.
Don't stop, you monsters!
You're a monster was hilarious. Keep it.

Happy holidays guys!
This was the most fun podcast of all. You all are monster if you don't keep the monsters segment.
YES!! Another PetaPixel podcast is here! Love you guys!
You guys are monsters for making me laugh too much. We want more 😊
Oh yes Pentax 👍 😊
Starting my day off with this podcast was the absolute best idea ever. I'm in a great mood now. LMAOOOOO
That’s an awesome statement! Thanks for watching the show and enjoying it.
My eyes aren’t so good anymore, so a great EVF is a necessity for me. I have yet to see a lcd panel that doesn’t suck in the sun.
Glove question: Vallerret photography gloves. Love em. I live in Canada and shoot in both civilization and North Ontario
Monster segment should stay!
You monsters, this podcast should have been exclusively shot on smartphones.

Chris’s newer PNW theme set is sweet and the keyboard - I want it
Thanks! The keyboards are easy to find on Amazon
CHRIS! GLOVES! OK, I have zero experience with the COLD here in Australia, but my daily gloves for shooting I use are just fingerless gym/weight training gloves. Keep the tactility in your fingers for cameras and keep the rest of your hands from being exposed!
Love the Festivus airing of grievances
Yes, please more Monster reasons. I NEED IT
It’s Festivus for the rest of us!
Love the you’re a monster segment ! So funny , it’s like kangaroo court in australia
Don't loose that segments, you monsters.!
Liked the monster segment on a smart phone
Would have been better on a smart phone!! It was great more please.
Moster is a thing now, keep the tally going into next year!

YES ! evf more magnification per the eye, better colors

An analogue camera for people serious about cameras would be a rangefinder camera with a modern mirrorless mount. An Fm4 or so.
Quite an enjoyable festivus 😁

I'd really like to see a 50-400 review. It's one im considering to pair with a Z camera for a tiger safari in India next year.
would love an RF 18-50mm f/4L IS or an RF 20-40mm f/2.8L IS for my travel photography ☺
