    I believe the 758 is probably the best of the three. I know the 400 has a 2 speed transaxle. You probably mowed in low, which I never do because I keep the grass short.
    The ground speed of the 400 is above 10 mph but the blade rpm is slow at about 1500.
    The 455 ground speed is around 8 mph but the blade rpm is 2000.
    The turning radius on the 455 is shorter as well.
    A better comparison would have been a 430 for the fact of them all being Yanmar diesel engines.
    My 430 as well as my 400 will cut a acre as fast as my 757 z-turn.
    The 20 hp yanmar diesel on the 430 is way superior to the 20 hp Kohler of the 400.
    I’ve had to rebuild every Kohler engine I’ve had on the 400’s around 1000 hours. Finally put a 23 hp Vanguard on the last one. It’s a hoss.

    What does high capacity deck actually mean? Is that just what they call it or do the blades spin faster like on zero turns.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      High capacity refers to the depth of the deck. The deeper the deck the more cuttings can be suspended in the air. The more cuttings in the air the higher volume the deck can mow.

  • @williamriley2528
    @williamriley2528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The decks for the 2 newer machines (455 & X758) just sound like the blade rotation might actually be at least 10-15% faster than the vintage 60 inch deck on the 400. (I think this would affect both the cut quality, and the overall cutting speed ??? No...???)

  • @WillieWonka928D
    @WillieWonka928D 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What impresses me is how theres a small but noticeable difference between the 400 and the others, but between the 455 and X758 how little difference there is besides clippings dispersal. I thought the X758 would clearly stand above the others but the 455 is almost right there. It's amazing how well the 455 does despite being a nearly 30 year old design.

    • @aprilgeneric8027
      @aprilgeneric8027 ปีที่แล้ว

      the accel deep deck actually did a better cut from what i saw, and i have a 445 same deck as the 455 and i have a 930M which has the same deck as the X758 just mounted different.
      remove the rear baffle block on all decks no matter the brand and they will all disperse the clippings much nicer.

    I have a 2019 X758 that I bought new. I probably shouldn't have it because it only takes 20 minutes to mow my entire yard. I mainly bought it to blow snow. My driveway is 80 feet long. But all and all I just like John deere. I had a 318 for 30 years before the X758.
    Interesting test. Great job.

      The market is really hard to gauge at the moment. Deck, cosmetic condition, and other factors will really determine value. The closest I could get you would be to expect somewhere between $2,000 and 4,000 in most cases. A $2000-2500 unit will have some slop in the AWS joints, cosmetically not perfect, and a 54” or 48” deck.

      The 4-5 series is great for some applications. I think I mentioned it in the video, but I find my 455 to be the most comfortable overall but my X748 and X758 with 60" high capacity deck will mow circles around a 4-5 series with a 60" deck.

    So you mentioned the “super GTs, or at least the designs”, are you not considering one a super gt? I have to say doing research, people seem to think the 758 isn’t comparable to anything relatively new, or even older (in a bad way). I understand the difference between the 748 and 758… is this what you are referring to? Or am I reading too far into it? Just ordered an x758 because I was not happy at how limited my x580 turned out to be, and I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed this time… I can’t imagine the 758 not being able to keep up or even surpass a 748, a 585, a 455, 400, 332, 318… and so on in any task other than FEL work. Granted, I may be wrong, I’m still pretty new to this and am trying to learn as much as I can. Sorry this doesn’t really relate to your video.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would class all three of these machines as the Super GT’s of their day. The 400 was a very large and capable machine when they came out in 1975 however capability wise they pale in comparison to the newer X7’s. So far I love the X758, functionality wise w/o the loader there isn’t a heap of difference between my X748 and X758. I do have a 2007 X748 meaning it is a MFWD vs the X758 being a HFWD. I find the HFWD much nicer than the MFWD. I think you should be happy with the X758, they are really good platforms.

    if you think the 400 handles like a pregnant cow, pit them all up against an X739. takes some adjusting and train of thought reprogramming, but once you get it, it's hard to go back to the pregnant cows. once you master it, you will just tell every one "nope! not with out my 739!"

    What is the blade condition on all 3 decks? Just curious on what it would be across them with new gator blades on all 3, I have a 420, and am repairing/restoring a 425 presently, along with a GX345. All 3 will be getting new gator blades soon. 425 will get them once it's engine repairs are done.

    Thank you for and I enjoy the channel. The 400 video made me keep them under consideration and I've had one for about 5 weeks now. What I would have liked to have seen up front is a check/comparison on the blades as well. Ideally in a test, they would all start off with new or sharpened blades. Any additional information in that direction (sorry its been 3 months)?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I did not mention that in the video. Yes, normally I would make sure everything was close to the same as possible. However, we had a drought this summer and by the time we got enough rain to make the grass grow my daylight time for filming was so limited that I just decided to get this quickly one afternoon. The blades were all approximately the same same. None were new. I would say the best blades were on the 455, but I would rate them all a 8/10. The X758 had about 40 mowing hours on the blades, the 400 blades looked very nice - nice enough that when I refurbed the deck I didn't feel the need to sharpen or buy new, and the 455 has about 30 hours on the current set.
