Thank you for this video. I bought this subscription on a whim cause I had like an hour left to do it and then in reading the print a couple more times it only talked about "50 percent off" so I got worried I payed 900 dollars for a discount and I was freaking out
You broke the math down perfectly but just one other point worth mentioning is the sub itself will generate points, depending on your tier you could get as much as $20-30 back, again chipping away at the cost (for next year's sub!)
That’s a good idea for next year’s video! It’s tough to calculate how much the points translate into savings/discounts with the multipliers and special point events and the VSMC products and all but it’s worth mentioning for sure! I got $30 off an order today thanks to that 😎
Terrific breakdown Celeste. All that said, I’m on the fence. VS is about discovery and supporting the mission but like many of us, would like to cut down on my yearly spend. I’m gonna let it run down to the wire on Friday but appreciated the level of detail. 😎
While I own a fair amount of VS titles, I definitely do not buy enough to warrant a subscription. I love the label as a whole, and what they do, even if all of it isn't necessarily for me. This video seems like it was a lot of work, and I'm not sure that I've ever seen someone break the subscription down on this level. I assumed the subscription was going to break down to the best value if you're the kind of VS consumer who even buys the majority of the releases throughout the year. But as it turns out, it IS in fact a better deal than I even thought it was based on your price breakdown. Thanks for putting in the work on this one! And 2 thumbs up on the "Sleezy Library of Congress" moniker!
Great Video! I was going back and fourth about whether I wanted to do this again (for the 5th year), but decided to bite the bullet and re-up. It’s still great every month getting a package at the door and not having to worry about logging on and grabbing stuff. It’s also still fun to me getting the random films I’ve never heard of and discovering them each month. Also, just found your channel and look forward to diving into your other videos!
Thanks so much!! I agree, it’s like Christmas every month. It’s just too fun for me to quit right now 💀 thanks for subscribing!! I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos :)
I really appreciate you doing such a detailed breakdown like this again, Celeste! Definitely helps to make a more educated decision when it comes to resubbing or not.
@@celestedelacabra I'm still on the fence, but I'm probably going to hold off this time around. I have a couple big expenses I'm anticipating towards the middle of the year, so trying to be more selective with titles in general in 2024.
One of the reason I subscribe is because when I didn't, I would pray over the new monthly releases for several days, getting more than I expected and getting nicked a shipping charge each time. I just like the set it and forget it aspect of it.
New to your channel and instantly fell in love (figuratively speaking). Love your voice and generally chill delivery. This is a must watch for any prospective full year subscribers. Thank you. And cheers.
Great breakdown as I have never subscribed to Vinegar Syndrome as I feel over 95% of all of their titles do not have any rewatchability to them. I think one would be better off renting their movies for $3 and moving on. I admire what they do but I feel they just polish a lot of turds and package them nicely.
There’s certainly some stinkers in the bunch but I think in general their output is very underrated. It depends on your tastes and how you approach the films
The conundrum that I find myself in each year is that the titles which for the most part interest me the most are the VS sub-label releases (VSU, VSA, VSL etc.). Regarding the mainline VS releases, which are included in the yearly subscription, I am more comfortable picking them up in their multiple sales each year for dirt cheap. The best sale that VS has had to date was their January 2022 sale, whereas for an entire week, they had 10 random blurays for 10 dollars each, which refreshed every 23 hours. I bought 2 of the new January 2022 VS releases month but picked up 40 of the $10 blu-rays of VS and partner label stuff. Most of those films were ones that I was not comfortable paying 20 or 30 dollars each but was fine with paying $10 for. They have not had a more aggressive sale since then. I also have snagged several daily titles during the 2024 subscriber week daily deals for 10 to 14 dollars a piece. So I agree that VS might be from a business since be a bit too aggressive with their sales. Great and highly informative video by the way!
Great video, Celeste. The math does help. I wish I could sign up but my budget for 2024 doesn't have too much wiggle room. But I do love VS and will have to pick up titles here and there
This is a great breakdown. I resubbed. I did my first subscription in 2023 and found it extremely beneficial. I know they had less ‘mainstream’ titles but I like seeing the more obscure stuff. Plus knowing I’m not gonna miss out on things that sell fast is safe and cozy lol
you did an amazing job breaking down all of this. im still on the fence about subbing because like you said but mostly only because its $900 after the coupon and like most people, this year has been my worst financially by far. otherwise id sign up right now. subbed!
Great breakdown Celeste. Honestly it comes down to taste. Subscription is totally worth it if you enjoy the titles. By now we what VS is and is not. I am glad you were able to subscribe. The issue for me is that subscribing would take away resources from Radiance and Criterion. I love the partner labels. Honestly 90% of my purchases were partner labels so the subscription is just not worth it for me given my film taste. The real question for me is whether or not to subscribe to Radiance lol.
Thank you! Totally agreed. Honestly the biggest negative is how much less time I have to devote to other labels. Thankfully there’s enough diversity to keep it from getting stale for me. But yeah if I could afford it I’d subscribe to radiance too honestly
I have never subscribed, but I do get that itch to do for the last two years, its just too big of a mixed bag, but I for sure want to subscribe at some point, maybe I'll ask myself that question again this time next year.
I always giggle a bit when I see how the subscriber price is listed against the MSRP, because you're right - no one buys at full price! so when you shared how much the 2023 collection was at sale price, that helped immensely in my decision whether to buy this year's slate.
@@celestedelacabra I did not. I do really enjoy VS, however I'm not a completionist and just can't get behind blind buying. But, your breakdown in costs vs. sale price (when in stock) confirmed I made the right call. this year at least, we'll see if I change next year!
I did the math yesterday and between VS, Mélusine and partner labels, I saved $467 with my subscriber discount in 2023 - and I only had a half year subscription 😅
@@celestedelacabra I was worried it wasn't going to work out for a minute, but yes I did reup this year! It'll be my first full year subscription. I got Gay USA, Blonde Death, Age of Demons, Dogs Don't Wear Pants, Cracking Up, and Stud Hunters. Probably getting The Tune at some point down the road too.
Appreciate all the math on the sub! I've been a subscriber for the last four years or so and I think overall it's definitely worth it. The biggest reason to get it is if you are a VS completionist. If you are constantly grabbing the new VSU's, sub labels and partner stuff, it's most certainly a bargain on the year. Also, I don't think you mentioned it but you rack up like 50$ in coupons from the VS points from the amount it costs to subscribe. So it's basically another 50$ off the total price of the sub, which basically takes it down to 800.00.
For sure! The only thing that really irks me about the sub these days are the subscriber week daily deals. So many of those titles were supposedly "discounted" as part of the annual package like Ticks, etc. We're supposed to be getting them at their best price, but there have been a number of titles in those sales that were significantly cheaper than they were factored in with our subscription. So the actual savings overall becomes murky with that extra money discounted on those previous VS titles in the daily deals. At the end of the day, the only way to truly tell is to do a big breakdown like you did with yours lol. Also, again if you're big into the brand as a whole, sub labels and partners, it's most likely worth it. @@celestedelacabra
@@MylesofHorror yeah the daily deals are complicated. Of course if you rely on those you run the risk of the slips selling out and there’s no guarantee at all that the titles you want will be discounted, and if they do it’ll be well over a year after release date
Great video Whenever you're spending money. You're not saving money The subscription used to be worth it when they included everything in the beginning. But now they broken it down to so many sub labels that you barely get anything they release. No VSA No VSL no VSP NO VS Whatever they can think to add up next
I only own 13 VS movies. And that's from collecting their titles for 3 years. So I'm very picky about what i get. And out of those I've got 3 mainstream titles. So for me a subscription will never be worth it. And right now Southern comfort is the only title I'll be picking up. Unless something pops up of interest in the daily sales.
It was a one week only event at the beginning of the year. I imagine they will offer halfway subscriptions at their halfway to Black Friday sale next month
I personally don't mind the cuts and prefer them over a slower delivery. However if you want to minimize the disrupting effect of jump cuts there is a trick: Cut the video a little bit later than the audio. This way the brain gets an implicit warning for the cut and it feels less aggressive. Also for a lot of little cuts there are tools to hide them with image morphing. Not necessary but should you use Premiere Pro those would be on your fingertips. It could however be that you already use both of these techniques and I just haven't noticed. 😅
